  • Weather derivatives designed to manage casual changes of weather, as opposed to catastrophic risks of weather, are relatively a new class of financial instruments. There are still many theoretical and practical challenges to the effective use of these instruments. The objective of this paper is to develop a pricing approach for valuing weather derivatives and presents a case study that is practical enough to be used by the risk managers of electrical utility firms. Utilizing daily average temperature data of Guangzhou, China from $1^{st}$ January 1978 to $31^{st}$ December 2010, this paper adopted a univariate time series model to describe weather behavior dynamics and calculates equilibrium prices for weather futures and options for an electrical utility firm in the region. The results imply that the risk premium is an important part of derivatives prices and the market price of risk affects option values much more than forward prices. It also demonstrates that weather innovation as well as weather risk management significantly affect the utility's financial outcomes.

  • Several kinds of High Temperature Superconducting(HTS) power cables have already been developed and evaluated for use in the utility power network. HTS power cable is expected to be used as a very powerful energy delivery system supplying electric power for densely populated cities in the near future, because HTS power cable is capable of the high current density delivery with low AC loss and the size effect comparing with the conventional cable whose capacity is same. Before applying the HTS power cable to real utility network system analysis should be carried out by some simulation tools. Hereby the electrical power system analysis is very important for the practical use of HTS power devices. In this paper, authors propose a real-time simulation method which incorporates a real HTS tapes into the simulated 22.9kV utility power network system using Real Time Digital Simulator(RTDS). For the simulation analysis, a test sample of HTS tapes was actually manufactured, and the transient phenomenon of HTS power cable system was analyzed in the simulated utility power network.

  • Recently, as a BIM-based construction simulation system, 4D CAD tools using virtual reality (VR) objects are being applied in construction project. In such a system, since the expression of the object is based on VR image, it has a sense of separation from the real environment, thus limiting the use of field engineers. For this reason, there are increasing cases of applying augmented reality (AR) technology to reduce the sense of separation from the field and express realistic VR objects. This study attempts to develop a methodology and BIM module for the pre-construction verification system using AR technology to increase the practical utility of VR-based BIM objects. To this end, authors develop an AR-based drawing verification function and drawing object-based 4D model augmentation function that can increase the practical utility of 2D drawings, and verify the applicability of the system by performing case analysis. Since VR object-based image has a problem of low realism to field engineers, the linking technology between AR object and 4D model is expected to contribute to the expansion of the use of 4D CADsystem in the construction project.

  • In this work, we have studied the effects of different soil thicknesses, haunch heights, reinforcement forms and construction technologies on the seismic performance of a composite precast fabricated utility tunnel by pseudo-static tests. Five concrete specimens were designed and fabricated for low-cycle reciprocating load tests. The hysteretic behavior of composite precast fabricated utility tunnel under simulated seismic waves and the strain law of steel bars were analyzed. Test results showed that composite precast fabricated utility tunnel met the requirements of current codes and had good anti-seismic performance. The use of a closed integral arrangement of steel bars inside utility tunnel structure as well as diagonal reinforcement bars at its haunches improved the integrity of the whole structure and increased the bearing capacity of the structure by about 1.5%. Increasing the thickness of covering soil within a certain range was beneficial to the earthquake resistance of the structure, and the energy consumption was increased by 10%. Increasing haunch height within a certain range increased the bearing capacity of the structure by up to about 19% and energy consumption by up to 30%. The specimen with the lowest haunch height showed strong structural deformation with ductility coefficient of 4.93. It was found that the interfaces of haunches, post-casting self-compacting concrete, and prefabricated parts were the weak points of utility tunnel structures. Combining the failure phenomena of test structures with their related codes, we proposed improvement measures for construction technology, which could provide a reference for the construction and design of practical projects.

  • The need for adopting automation technologies to improve inefficiencies in interior finishing modeling work is increasing during the Building Information Modeling (BIM) design stage. As a result, the use of visual programming languages (VPL) for practical applications is growing. However, undefined or incorrect space designations in BIM models can hinder the development of automated finishing modeling processes, resulting in erroneous corrections and rework. To address this challenge, this study first developed a rule-based automated interior finishing detailing module for floors, walls, and ceilings. In addition, an automated space integrity checking module with 86.69% ACC using the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) model was developed. These modules were integrated into a design automation module for interior finishing, which was then verified for practical utility. The results showed that the automation module reduced the time required for modeling and integrity checking by 97.6% compared to manual work, confirming its utility in assisting BIM model development for interior finishing works.

  • Recent developments in power electronics technology have spurred interest in the use of renewable energy sources as distributed generation (DG) generators. The key component in DG generators is a grid-connected inverter that serves as an effective interface between the renewable energy source and the utility grid. The multifunctional inverter (MFI) is special type of grid-connected inverter that has elicited much attention in recent years. MFIs not only generate power for DGs but also provide increased functionality through improved power quality and voltage and reactive power support; thus, the capability of the auxiliary service for the utility grid is improved. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the various MFI system configurations for single-phase (two-wire) and three-phase (three- or four-wire) systems and control strategies for the compensation of different power quality problems. The advances in practical applications and recent research on MFIs are presented through a review of nearly 200 papers.

  • In route guidance systems fastest-path routing has typically been adopted because of its simplicity. However, empirical studies on route choice behavior have shown that drivers use numerous criteria in choosing a route. The objective of this study is to develop computationally efficient algorithms for identifying a manageable subset of the nondominated (i.e. Pareto optimal) paths for real-time vehicle routing which reflect the drivers' preferences and route choice behaviors. We propose two pruning algorithms that reduce the search area based on a context-dependent linear utility function and thus reduce the computation time. The basic notion of the proposed approach is that ⅰ) enumerating all nondominated paths is computationally too expensive, ⅱ) obtaining a stable mathematical representation of the drivers' utility function is theoretically difficult and impractical, and ⅲ) obtaining optimal path given a nonlinear utility function is a NP-hard problem. Consequently, a heuristic two-stage strategy which identifies multiple routes and then select the near-optimal path may be effective and practical. As the first stage, we utilize the relaxation based pruning technique based on an entropy model to recognize and discard most of the nondominated paths that do not reflect the drivers' preference and/or the context-dependency of the preference. In addition, to make sure that paths identified are dissimilar in terms of links used, the number of shared links between routes is limited. We test the proposed algorithms in a large real-life traffic network and show that the algorithms reduce CPU time significantly compared with conventional multi-criteria shortest path algorithms while the attributes of the routes identified reflect drivers' preferences and generic route choice behaviors well.

  • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been applied to the construction industry for improving the efficiency of material and process management. Most RFID-related studies have focused on building or plant construction. The application of RFID has been limited in pipeline construction projects where materials are stored and stacked across a large construction site. This paper investigates practical issues in pipeline construction, improves the read rates of RFID tags, and tests their utility by putting them into practice. This paper demonstrates the benefits that may be expected with the use of improved RFID tags and the development of an automated pipeline construction management system. As a result, pipeline construction management time decreased by 28 hours per month compared to the conventional method. Cost decreased by about 26%.
