Study on engineering properties of xanthan gum reinforced kaolinite

  • The strengthening efficiency of biopolymer treated soil depends on biopolymer type, concentration ratio, soil type, initial water content, curing time and mixing method. In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of xanthan gum (XG) treated kaolinite were investigated through compaction test, Atterberg limit test, triaxial test and unconfined compression test. The results indicated that the optimum water content (OWC) increased from 30.3% of untreated clay to 33.5% of 5% XG treated clay, while the maximum dry density has a slight increase from 13.96 kg/m3 to 14 kg/m3 of 0.2% XG treated clay and decrease to 2.7 kg/m3 of 5% XG treated clay. Meanwhile, the plastic limit of XG treated clay increased with the increase of XG concentration, while 0.5% XG treated clay can be observed the maximum liquid limit with 79.5%. Moreover, there are the ideal water content about 1.3-1.5 times of the optimum water content achieving the maximum dry density and curing time to obtain the maximum compressive strength for different XG contents, which the UCS is 1.52 and 2.07 times of the maximum UCS of untreated soil for 0.5% and 1% XG treated clay, respectively. In addition, hot-dry mixing can achieve highest UCS than other mixing methods (e.g., dry mixing, wet mixing and hot-wet mixing).

Out-of-plane performance of infill masonry walls reinforced with post-compressed wedges under lateral-concentrated push load

  • Infill masonry walls are vulnerable to lateral loads, including seismic, wind, and concentrated push loads. Various strengthening metal fittings have been proposed to improve lateral load resistance, particularly against seismic loads. This study introduces the use of post-compressed wedges as a novel reinforcement method for infill masonry walls to enhance lateral load resistance. The resistance of the infill masonry wall against lateral-concentrated push loads was assessed using an out-of-plane push-over test on specimens sized 2,300×2,410×190 mm3. The presence or absence of wedges and wedge spacing were set as variables. The push-over test results showed that both the unreinforced specimen and the specimen reinforced with 300 mm spaced wedges toppled, while the specimen reinforced with 100 mm spaced wedges remained upright. Peak loads were measured to be 0.74, 29.77, and 5.88 kN for unreinforced specimens and specimens reinforced with 100 mm and 300 mm spaced wedges, respectively. Notably, a tighter reinforcement spacing yielded a similar strength, as expected, which was attributed to the increased friction force between the masonry wall and steel frame. The W-series specimens exhibited a trend comparable to that of the displacement ductility ratio. Overall, the findings validate that post-compressed wedges improve the out-of-plane strength of infill masonry walls.

유화형 액막법에 의한 Zn 성분의 추출시 액막의 안정성 (The Stability of Liquid Membrane in the Extraction of the Zn Component by Liquid Surfactant Membrane Process)

  • 유화형 액막을 이용하여 $D_2EHPA-Kerosene-Span$ $80-H_2SO_4$계에서 Zn 성분의 추출시 액막의 안정성에 영향을 미치는 에멀젼의 파괴, swelling 현상 및 에멀젼의 morphology를 조사하였다. Zn 성분의 추출시 액막의 안정성에 대한 최적 조건은 계면활성제 Span 80의 농도 2~3 vol.%, 추출담제 $D_2EHPA$의 농도 5~7 vol.%, 막강화제 paraffin oil의 농도 10 vol.% 였으며, 외부수용액에 대한 에멀젼의 비 0.1, 유기상에 대한 내부수용액의 비는 1.0이 적절하였다.

Repair of flange damage steel-concrete composite girders using CFRP sheets

  • Damaged steel-concrete composite girders can be repaired and retrofitted by epoxy-bonded carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets to the critical areas of tension flanges. This paper presents the results of a study on the behavior of damaged steel-concrete composite girders repaired with CFRP sheets under static loading. A total of seven composite girders made of I20A steel sections and 80mm-thick by 900mm-wide concrete slabs were prepared and tested. CFRP sheets and prestressed CFRP sheets were used to repair the specimens. The specimens lost the cross-sectional area of their tension flanges with 30%, 50% and 100%. The results showed that CFRP sheets had no significant effect on the yield loads of strengthened composite girders, but had significant effect on the ultimate loads. The yield loads, elastic stiffness, and ultimate bearing capacities of strengthened composite girders had been changed as a result of prestressed CFRP sheets, the utilization ratio of CFRP sheets could be effectively improved by applying prestress to CFRP sheets. Both the yield loads and ultimate bearing capacities had been changed as a result of steel beam's flange damage level and CFRP sheets could cover the girders' shortage of bearing capacity with 30% and 50% flange damage, respectively.

  • It was possible to produce W/O/W one step multiple emulsion on the system which satisfied following conditions. 1. 1-5% of hydrophilic liquid surfactant over HLB20 and lipophilic liquid surfactant which has HLB 3∼5 2. Non wax copolymers as oil thickener 3. More than 0.5% of carbomer as aqueous thickener 4. The manufacturing process which neutralize the dispersed carbomer (2.0% in water), after emulsifying. For the selective addition into inner and outer aqueous phase, we melted the glucose in water before emulsifying. Using an Anthrone analysis method, we analyzed the encapsulation yield of glucose in inner water phase. It was possible to raise the water encapsulation yield of the multiple emulsion through the following conditions. 1. Using of anionic hydrophilic surfactant(HLB 40) and lipophilic surfactant (HLB 3∼5) 2. Controlling the ratio of hydrophilic surfactant and lipophilic surfactant 3. Strengthening interface with increase of non wax oil thickener. When the separated adding process of glucose was adopted, approximately 85% of glucose was added selectively within inner aqueous phase.

Dynamic properties of gel-type biopolymer-treated sands evaluated by Resonant Column (RC) Tests

  • Due to numerous environmental concerns in recent years, the search for and the development of sustainable technologies have been pursued. In particular, environmentally friendly methods of soil improvement, such as the potential use of biopolymers, have been researched. Previous studies on the use of biopolymers in soil improvement have shown that they can provide substantial strengthening efficiencies. However, in order to fully understand the applicability of biopolymer treated soils, various properties of these soils such as their dynamic properties must be considered. In this study, the dynamic properties of gel-type biopolymer treated soils were observed through the use of resonant column tests. Gellan gum and Xanthan gums were the target gel-type biopolymers used in this study, and the target soil for this study was jumunjin sand, the standard sand of Korea. Through this study it was demonstrated that biopolymers can be used to enhance the dynamic properties of the soil, and that they offer possibilities of reuse to reduce earthquake related soil failures.

탄소섬유쉬트로 보강된 원형CFT기둥의 압축거동과 ACI 440 code를 응용한 압축내력예측식 제안 (Axial Loading Behaviors and ACI 440 Code Applied Ultimate Axial Strength Formula of CFRP Strengthened Circular CFT Columns)

  • 본 연구에서는 CFRP쉬트로 보강된 원형 CFT기둥의 압축거동을 관찰하고 설계식을 제안하였다. 원형 CFT기둥의 CFRP쉬트의 보강효과를 관찰하기 위해 10개의 실험체를 제작하여 중심축하중 실험을 수행하였다. 실험변수로는 CFRP쉬트 보강겹수와 직경-두께비(D/t)이다. 실험결과 원형CFT기둥에 CFRP쉬트 보강을 통해 압축내력을 증가시킨 것으로 나타났다. 끝으로 ACI 440code를 응용하여 CFRP 보강된 원형 CFT기둥의 압축내력을 예측하기 위한 설계식을 제안한다. 제안식을 분석한 결과 실험결과와 비교적 일치한 것으로 나타났다.

  • When a metal sprayed film of several hundred ㎛ on the concrete surface is possible to 80 dB of shielding effect electromagnetic waves (ElectroMagnetic Pulse, EMP). Therefore, in this study, as a way to secure EMP shielding performance by applying a metal spray coating showing excellent EMP shielding performance to a concrete structure, the metal spray welding efficiency and thin film adhesion performance according to the concrete spray direction and surface treatment method were evaluated. Metal sprayed efficieny according to the metal spraying direction and method was confirmed that the difference was insignificant by applying the roughening agent. However, the method of strengthening the concrete surface and applying the sealing agent show maximum adhesion strength of 3.98 MPa compared to other methods, and it is judged that this method can be utilized for the metal spraying method for concrete EMP shielding.

공용중 보수용접에 의한 용접부의 응력 및 변형의 거동 - 인장력 작용중 균열보수용접에 의해 생기는 응력 및 변형의 거동 - (Behavior of Stress and Deformation Generated by Repair Welding under Loading)

  • 차량하중의 증가 및 부식 등에 의해 손상된 강교량 구조물들은 보수 보강이 요구되어진다. 손상부채를 보수 보강하는 방법은 단면결손이 없다는 장점을 가진 용접에 의한 보수방법이 유리하다. 3차원 탄소성해석 결과를 토대로 공용중 보수용접에 의해 생기는 응력과 변형의 거동에 대해 연구하였다. 균열이 있는 부재에 하중만 작용할 경우 과도 응력의 크기는 보수용접균열길이 및 균열깊이가 큰 순으로 크다. $80MPa({\sigma}_y/3)$$140MPa({\sigma}_a)$의 응력 작용시 보수용접에 의해 발생되는 응력의 크기는 무응력 상태에서 보수용접시 발생되는 응력의 크기와 하중재하에 의해 생긴 응력의 크기의 합과 비슷하다. 응력 작용시 보수용접에 의해 발생되는 용접선방향 인장과도응력 성분은 부재폭에 대한 균열 길이비(1/b)가 커지면 커짐을 알 수 있다. 또한, 응력 작용시 보수용접에 의해 발생되는 용접선 직각방향의 면내수축변위의 크기는 보수용접길이가 긴순으로 크다.

업무시설의 리노베이션 현황에 관한 조사 연구 (A Research on the Renovation Situation of the Business Buildings)

  • The functions and uses of existing buildings are not properly changing as modern life needs. As a result, the frequent reconstruction(construction after removal) of existing buildings have been done but it became more and more difficult because of strengthening of regulations and systems concerning construction. And also it has several disadvantages like lower plot ratio and site coverage than existed buildings, enormous construction cost, production of waste-construction materials and thoughtless consumption of natural resources, which gives rise to environmental pollution. Therefore renovation is brought to the fore. In Korea, many business buildings were constructed in 1960s-1970s, during the period of high growth. Such buildings needs to be repaired in whole. It is caused by the change of social, economic, and cultural conditions and deterioration of equipments. Therefore renovation meets some necessary conditions; recovery of building functions and extension of building life span. In case study, the present state of renovation in business buildings is 1) Basic safety, for example, fire prevention and crime prevention, is great important. 2) Advanced technology, INS(international news service), IBS(Intelligent Building System), and internationalization, is pursued for adapting to multimedia ages. 3) It tries to promote proficiency, and to save the energy using spatial environment and natural energy(light and sound). Also, improving comfortable level of users and installing equipments for physically handicapped person needs to be considered.
