In this paper the new intensity measures (IMs) for probabilistic seismic analysis of RC high-rise buildings with core wall structural system are proposed. The existing IMs are analysed and the new optimal ones are presented. The newly proposed IMs are based on the existing ones which: 1) comprise a wider range of frequency velocity spectrum content and 2) are defined as the integral along the velocity spectrum. In analysis characteristics of optimal IMs such as: efficiency, practicality, proficiency and sufficiency are considered. As prototype buildings, RC high-rise buildings with core wall structural system and with characteristic heights: 20-storey, 30-storey and 40-storey, are selected. The non-linear 3D models of the prototype buildings are constructed. 720 non-linear time-history analyses are conducted for 60 ground motion records with a wide range of magnitudes, distances to source and various soil types. Statistical processing of results and detailed regression analysis are performed and appropriate demand models which relate IMs to demand measures (DMs), are obtained. The conducted analysis has shown that the newly proposed IMs can efficiently predict the DMs with minimum dispersion and satisfactory practicality as compared to the other commonly used IMs (e.g., PGA and $S_a(T_1)$). The newly proposed IMs overcome difficulties in calculating of integral along the velocity spectrum and present adequate replacement for IMs which comprise a wider range of frequency velocity spectrum content.
Catastrophe models appraise the natural risk of the built-infrastructure simulating the interaction of its exposure and vulnerability with a hazard. Because of unique configurations and reduced number, mid/high-rise buildings present singular challenges to the assessment of their damage vulnerability. This paper presents a novel approach to estimate the vulnerability of mid/high-rise buildings (MHB) which is used in the Florida Public Hurricane Loss Model, a catastrophe model developed for the state of Florida. The MHB vulnerability approach considers the wind pressure hazard exerted over the building's height as well as accompanying rain. The approach assesses separately the damages caused by wind, debris impact, and water intrusion on building models discretized into typical apartment units. Hurricane-induced water intrusion is predicted combining the estimates of impinging rain with breach and pre-existing building defect size estimates. Damage is aggregated apartment-by-apartment and story-by-story, and accounts for vertical water propagation. The approach enables the vulnerability modeling of regular and complex building geometries in the Florida exposure and elsewhere.
To date, one of the prevailing criticisms of Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe has seen the adventure novel as a celebration of the rise of mercantile capitalism and the beginnings of colonialism. From this point of view, the Englishman has often been interpreted as an early embodiment of the concept of the sovereign economic subject. Prominent social critics who took up this interpretation have included Karl Marx, Max Weber, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Within literary studies proper, the work of Ian Watt offered perhaps the earliest version of this point of view of the novel. Influenced by both Weber and Rousseau, Ian Watt argued that Defoe's wandering protagonist embodies the rise of economic individualism. More recent criticism has tended to challenge this dominant interpretation by laying greater stress on such countervailing factors as Crusoe's mental uncertainty and inner conflict. Drawing inspiration from Fredric Jameson's diagnosis of the ills of late capitalism, this paper analyzes the ways in which Defoe's hero, rather than championing modern rationality, can in fact be seen as suffering from many forms of emotional psychosis. Robinson Crusoe can, after all, be better viewed as a contradictory multi-layered text that, despite its outward valorization of economic individualism, portrays its hero as a victim of negative capitalistic forces, a hero driven by his desire to possess but haunted by a fear of loss, a hero who flaunts inflated feelings of self-worth even as he reveals deflated notions of material insecurity and mental persecution.

The pulsed amplifier which switches the main supply voltage of RF amplifier according to input pulse signal has good efficiency and low noise level between pulses. And it has simple structure because it doesn't need a pulse modulator at input port. The pulsed amplifier using the conventional switching circuit has slow fall time compared to rise time. We proposed the novel switching circuit for improving the fall time of pulsed amplifier The proposed switching circuit is implemented by replacing FET of conventional circuit with BJT. As a result of appling this circuit to RF pulsed amplifier, the rise and fall time are 5.7 ns and 21.9 ns at 27 dBm output power, respectively.
In this paper, a novel multi-feature model predictive control (MPC) framework with real-time and adaptive performances is proposed for intelligent structural control in which some drawbacks of the algorithm including, complex control rule and non-optimality, are alleviated. Hence, Linear Programming (LP) is utilized to simplify the resulted control rule. Afterward, the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) is applied to the optimal and adaptive tuning of the LP weights independently at each time step. The stochastic control rule is also achieved using Kalman Filter (KF) to handle noisy measurements. The Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) is then adopted to develop a data-driven and real-time control algorithm. The efficiency of the developed algorithm is then demonstrated by numerical simulation of a twenty-story high-rise benchmark building subjected to earthquake excitations. The competency of the proposed method is proven from the aspects of optimality, stochasticity, and adaptivity compared to the KF-based MPC (KMPC) and constrained MPC (CMPC) algorithms in vibration suppression of building structures. The average value for performance indices in the near-field and far-field (El earthquakes demonstrates a reduction up to 38.3% and 32.5% compared with KMPC and CMPC, respectively.
To enhance the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) range and power density of the phase-shift full-bridge (PSFB) ZVS converters used in geophysical exploration, an additional resonant inductor is used as a leakage inductance and a blocking capacitor which is equivalent to interlayer capacitance is integrated into a novel integrated inductor-capacitor-transformer (L-C-T). The leakage inductance and equivalent interlayer capacitance of the novel integrated L-C-T are difficult to determine by conventional methods. To address this issue, this paper presents accurate and efficient methods to compute the leakage inductance and equivalent interlayer capacitance. Moreover, the accuracy of this methodology, which is based on electromagnetic energy and Lebedev's method, is verified by an experimental analysis and a finite element analysis (FEA). Taking the problems of the novel integrated L-C-T into consideration, the losses of the integrated L-C-T are analyzed and the temperature rise of the integrated L-C-T is determined by FEA. Finally, a PSFB ZVS converter prototype with the novel integrated L-C-T is designed and tested.
The aim of the present study is to find a good quality user equilibrium assignments under time varying condition. For this purpose, this study introduces a dynamic network loading method that can maintain correct flow propagation as well as flow conservation, and it develops a novel solution algorithm that does not need evaluation of the objective function by modifying the Schittenhelm (1990)'s algorithm. This novel algorithm turns out to be efficient and convenient compared to the conventional Frank-Wolfe (1956) algorithm because the former finds solutions based on routes rather than links so that it can maintain correct flow propagation intrinsically in the time-varying network conditions. The application of dynamic user equilibrium (DUE) assignment model with this novel solution algorithm to test networks including medium-sized one shows that the present DUE assignment model gives rise to high quality discrete time solutions when we adopt the deterministic queuing model for a link performance function, and we associate flows and costs in a proper way.

Recently, there has been a rise in the number of amphetamine derivatives that serve as substitutes for controlled substances (e.g. amphetamine and methamphetamine) on the global illegal drug market. These substances are capable of producing rewarding effects similar to their parent drug. In anticipation of the future rise of new and similar psychoactive substances, we designed and synthesized four novel amphetamine derivatives with N-benzyl, N-benzylamphetamine HCl (NBNA) substituent on the amine region, 1,4-dioxane ring, ethylenedioxy-amphetamine HCl (EDA), methyl, para-methylamphetamine HCl (PMEA), and naphthalene, 2-(aminopropyl) naphthalene HCl (2-APN) substituents on the phenyl site. Then, we evaluated their abuse potential in the conditioned place preference (CPP) test in mice and self-administration (SA) test in rats. We also investigated the psychostimulant properties of the novel drugs using the locomotor sensitization test in mice. Moreover, we performed qRT-PCR analyses to explore the effects of the novel drugs on the expression of D1 and D2 dopamine receptor genes in the striatum. NBNA, but not EDA, PMEA, and 2-APN, induced CPP and SA in rodents. None of the test drugs have produced locomotor sensitization. qRT-PCR analyses demonstrated that NBNA increased the expression of striatal D1 dopamine receptor genes. These data indicate that NBNA yields rewarding effects, suggesting potential for abuse. Continual observation for the rise of related substances is thus strongly encouraged.
Objective: Alongside the rise of animal-protection awareness in Taiwan, the public has been paying more attention to dog genetic deficiencies due to inbreeding in the pet market. The goal of this study was to isolate novel microsatellite markers for monitoring the genetic structure of domestic dog populations in Taiwan. Methods: A total of 113 DNA samples from three dog breeds-beagles (BEs), bichons (BIs), and schnauzers (SCs)-were used in subsequent polymorphic tests applying the 14 novel microsatellite markers that were isolated in this study. Results: The results showed that the high level of genetic diversity observed in these novel microsatellite markers provided strong discriminatory power. The estimated probability of identity (P(ID)) and the probability of identity among sibs (P(ID)sib) for the 14 novel microsatellite markers were 1.7×10-12 and 1.6×10-5, respectively. Furthermore, the power of exclusion for the 14 novel microsatellite markers was 99.98%. The neighbor-joining trees constructed among the three breeds indicated that the 14 sets of novel microsatellite markers were sufficient to correctly cluster the BEs, BIs, and SCs. The principal coordinate analysis plot showed that the dogs could be accurately separated by these 14 loci based on different breeds; moreover, the Beagles from different sources were also distinguished. The first, the second, and the third principal coordinates could be used to explain 44.15%, 26.35%, and 19.97% of the genetic variation. Conclusion: The results of this study could enable powerful monitoring of the genetic structure of domestic dog populations in Taiwan.

In order to analyze the frequency dependance of ground impedance in grounding grids for lightning and surge protection, a novel method for measuring the ground impedance as a function of frequency were experimentally investigated. The experiments were carried out in rectangular grounding grids with $6{\times}8$ conductors of 22 $mm^2$ buried at a depth of 0.5 m. The test current was injected by the variable frequency inverter whose frequency is linearly controlled for the established period in the range of 5∼500 KHz. The amplitude and phase of ground impedance were calculated from the waveforms of the test current and ground potential rise measured by the band-pass filter tuned in a specific frequency. The frequency dependence of ground impedance was mainly caused by the inductive current flowing through grounding conductors over the frequency of 100 KHz. The proposed measurement method of ground impedance would be applicable to evaluate the transient response characteristics in lightning protection grounding systems.
