  • A total of 15 larvae [3.53~19.49 mm standard length (SL)] belonging to the family Bothidae collected from the southern sea of Korea in 2016 were identified as Psettina tosana based on 434 base-pair sequences of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I. Larvae of Psettina tosana have anterior-most two elongated dorsal fin rays. Uniserial melanophores present on the dorsal and anal fin base, whereas melanophores on the body absent. An inflection point in the relative growth of head length and head depth against SL was shown between 9.93 mm and 10.73 mm SL. The examined larvae of Psettina tosana are clearly distinguished from the most similar species, Psettina iijimae in having no melanophore patches in the proximity of dorsal and anal fin base.

  • Objectives: It is well known that genetic factors and environmental factors play major role in aging skin. In general, son and daughter take after their parents in appearance. But comparability of skin properties in Korean family has not been well estimated. So we evaluated the correlation of skin properties in Korean mother-daughter pairs. Methods: 10 couples of mother and daughter pair(n=20) participate in this study. Mothers and daughters were aged $50.6{\pm}2.459$ and $23.8{\pm}2.15$ years, respectively. Skin moisture, sebum, skin color and elasticity is measured using non-invasive method : Corneometer CM825, Sebumeter(MPA580), Mexameter MX18, Cutometer MPA580. Statistical analysis program we used is Minitab 14 Korea. Results: The Skin moisture of mother group was significantly higher than daughter group. And skin elasticity(R2) of the daughter group was significantly higher than mother group. In the results of correlation analysis between mother and daughter pairs, skin elasticity(R2) had high positive correlation(r=0.729, p=0.026). But skin moisture, sebum, melanin index, erythema index and skin elasticity(R5) did not be confirmed a significant correlation. Conclusions: Skin elasticity(R2) is the only factor that showed high positive correlation significantly in mother and daughter pairs. Mother and daughter share the genetic factors and environmental factors that influence skin aging. So, mother's aging pattern will be a good guide for anti-aging of daughters.

  • Miniature inverted transposable elements (MITEs) are abundant genomic components in plant including rice. MITE-transposon display (MITE-TD) is an Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP)-related technique based on MITE sequence. In this study, we used the MITE-AFLP for the analysis of diversity and relation-ship of the 114 japonica accessions. Of the several MITEs, the mPing family was applied to detect polymorphisms based on PCR amplification. The BfaI adaptor primer and the specific primer derived from mPing terminal inverted repeat (TIR) region were used to PCR amplification of 114 accessions. Nine primer pairs produced a total of 160 polymorphic bands. PIC values of the polymorphic bands generated by nine primer pairs ranged from 0.269 (BfaI + ACT) to 0.426 (BfaI + T). Each accession revealed a distinct fingerprint with two primer combinations, BfaI + G and BfaI + C. Cluster analysis using marker-based genetic similarity classified 114 accessions into five groups. MITE-AFLP markers were genetically mapped using a population of 80 BILs (BC1F7) derived from a cross between the rice accessions, Milyang 23 and Hapcheonaengmi 3. Eight of the markers produced with the primer pair BfaI + 0 were mapped on chromosomes 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 9. Considering that one MITE-AFLP marker on chromosome 7 was tightly linked to the Rc gene, the MITE-AFLP markers will be useful for gene tagging and molecular cloning.

  • The inheritance of isoenzymes in young coat tissues of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) was studied by electrophoretically analysing five parental clones and their full-sib progenies obtained by crossing one female clone to four male clones. The distal 2cm section of vigorous young roots of 70 seedlings per family were subjected to horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. The resulting gels were tested for activity of 7 enzyme systems. Evidences for the inheritance of isoenzymes observed indicated that the isoenzyme variants of every isoenzyme zone were under control of codominant alleles at a single locus. Chi-square test of joint segregation data of the two loci, 6-PGD-2 and PGI-2, indicated that the pair of loci was not linked.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to find out whether group approach of sensory integration (SI) enhances sensory processing, fine motor function, and social skill for the children with sensory integration disorders. Method : Three children with problems related in sensory integration had got received 21 intervention sessions. We evaluated children with sensory profile(SP), social maturity test, Korean-developmental test of visual perception(K-DTVP), Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency(BOTMP) before-and after intervention. The statistical significance of data is tested by the Wilcoxon matched-pair signed rank test. Results : All data of post-intervention did not show any statistically significant differences; SP, social maturity test, K-DTVP, BOTMP. Conclusions : This study is to verify the effect of group SI intervention on sensory processing, fine motor function, and social skill for children with sensory integration disabilities. The results were not statistically significant. However, the average score after SI intervention has been improved in the section of fine motor and social skill comparing to that of pre-intervention period. It would have positive impact for children with sensory integration disabilities. It is needed to study with the larger number of target children and more often treatment session are suggested. The confounding variables also should be controlled in the further study.

  • 1. It has been found in the karyotype of Apodemus agrarius coreae that No. 1 chromosome pair is subtelocentric and this is the new chromosome type in comparison with acro-telocentric No. 1 pair of the other subpecies. 2. It was reported in the Karyotype of Microtus fortis from USSR that the autosome consisted of 2 submetacentric, 10 metacentric and 38 acrocentric chromosomes, and that X is acrocentric and Y is small acrocentric one. In the present study, however, the autosome of M. fortis pelliceus in Korea is composed of three groups; 4 subtelocentric, 10 meta-submetacenric, and 36 acrocentric one. And X is the largest metacentric chromosome of the complement. Y is smaller acrocentric one. Thus, it has been found that the karyotype of M. fortis in Korea differs from that of the same species in USSR. In the karyotype of this red vole, two pairs of heteromorohic chromosome with respect to the size of their secondary constrictions have been shown in the acrocentric group. 3. The diploid number of Cricetulus triton nestor was found to be 28, and its chromosome size ranges from 7.5 $\\mu$ to 1.5 $\\mu$. Autosomes contains 11 large acrocentric pairs and two pairs of very small metacentric ones. This feature is simillar to that of Tscherskia triton found USSR.

  • This study analyzed the Planting Prototype of Haengdan(杏壇)is the One of the traditional planting techniques and the value of natural monument plant and derived the value of the ginkgo tree in Sejong-ri as a natural monument. The results are as follows; First, ginkgo trees have high environmental adaptability, practicality and visual value. There were also many ginkgo trees that were deeply related to Confucian and Buddhist ideas. Ginkgo trees accounted for the largest portion of the number of old tree designated as natural monuments in recognition of their value. Second, after analyzing the historical and cultural values of ginkgo trees, ginkgo trees became the place of gardens and buildings by symbolizing Confucius(孔子)' Confucian ideas. In Buddhism, it was related to the creation of temples or the achievements of ancient monks. The people had a symbol of the prosperity of their offspring and the succession of the family. Third, in 1024 gongdobo, the grandson of Confucius, rebuilt the shrine, installed the platform in the central position and planted ginkgo trees. It originated from what he called "the "haengdan(杏壇)." The tree was then recorded as "heungheang(紅杏)" which was written by Wang Jae-jin's poetry during the Ming Dynasty. Thus it was misused as apricot tree. The cause of this is due to the same kanji reading. or it can be seen as influence on the taoism. But Korea has been sticking to the use of the first ginkgo trees. Forth, biologically, the Sejong-ri ginkgo tree is characterized by the composition of a pair of male trees. The landscape is contrasted with the twisted male tree and vertical female trees. In addition, in terms of authenticity and integrity, the relationship between Admiral Im, Nan-Su(林蘭秀) of the Goryeo Dynasty and the ginkgo tree is found in various literature.

  • Ultrastructural characteristics of the testis and spermatogenesis of Crassostrea gigas were investigated by Transmission and Scanning Electron microscope observations. The testis is a diffuse organ consisting of branching acini containing differentiating germ cells in a variety of stages. The acinus is surrounded by an intermitent layer of myoepithelial cells andis divided into subcompartments that are partially separated by pleomorphic accessory cells which remain in close contact with germ cells until late stages of development. these accessory cells contain a large quantity of glycogen particles and lipid droplets in the cytoplasm. Therefore, it is assumed that they are involved in the supplying of the nutrients for germ cell development, while any phenomena associated with phagocytosis of undischarged, residual sperms by lysosomes could be find in the cytoplasm of the accessory cells. The morphology of the spermatozoon has a primitive type and is similar to those of other bivalves. Mature spermatozoa consist of broad, cap-shaped acrosomal vesicle, subacrosomal material (containing axial rod embedded in a granular matrix), a oval nucleus showing deeply invaginated anteriorly, two triplet substructure centrioles surrounded by four spherical mitochondria, and satelite fibres appear to the distal centriole and plasma membrane. Spermatozoa of C. gigas resemble to those of other investigated ostreids. In particular, the anterior region of the acrosomal vesicle is transversely banded. It is assumed that differences in this acrosomal substructure are associated with the inability of fertilization between the genus Crassostrea and other genus species in Ostreidae. Therefore, we can use sperm morphology in the resolution of taxonomic relationships within the Ostreidea. The spermatozoon is approximately $42-47{\mu}m$ in length including an oval sperm nucleus (about $0.91{\mu}m$ in length), an acrosome (about $0.42{\mu}m$ in length) and tail flagellum ($40-45{\mu}m$). The axoneme of the sperm tail flagellum consists of nine pairs of microtubules at the periphery and a pair at the center. The axoneme of the sperm tail shows a 9 + 2 structure. These morphological charateristics of acrosomal vesicle belong to the family Ostreidae in the subclass Pteriomorphia.

  • An isoflavone glucosidase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of isoflavone glucosides into glucose and corresponding aglycones was purified from Candida fermentati SI. The N-terminal sequence was determined to be GLNCDYCN. We designed degenerate primers on the basis of these amino acid sequences and successfully cloned the full structural gene sequence of the isoflavone glucosidase using inverse PCR. The exo-β-(1,3)-glucanase gene consists of 1227 base-pair nucleotides, encoding a 408-amino-acid sequence that shares 41–96% amino acid homology with other yeast exo-β-(1,3)-glucanases belonging to glycoside hydrolase family 5. The recombinant exo-β-(1,3)-glucanase was expressed in Pichia pastoris X-33, using a pPICZA vector system, and further characterized. The molecular mass of the purified exo-β-(1,3)-glucanase was estimated by SDS-PAGE to be 47 kDa. The optimal pH and temperature were pH 4.5 and 40℃, respectively. The Km values of the purified exo-β-(1,3)-glucanase for daidzin and genistin were 0.12 mM and 0.14 mM, respectively. The Vmax values of the purified isoflavone glucosidase were 945.03 U/mg for daidzin and 835.92 U/mg and for genistin.
