  • The human being receives a new information from outside and the information shows gradual oblivion with time. But it remains in memory and isn't forgotten for a long time if the information is read several times over. For example, we assume that we memorize a telephone number when we listen and never remind we may forget it soon, but we commit to memory long time by repeating. If the human being received new information with strong stimulus, it could remain in memory without recalling repeatedly. The moments of almost losing one's life in on accident or getting a stroke of luck are rarely forgiven. The human being can keep memory for a long time in spite of the limit of memory for the mechanism mentioned above. In this paper, we will make a model explaining that mechanism using a neural network Adaptive Resonance Theory.

  • In order to obtain the detailed informations about the lightning electromagnetic fields, the electric and magnetic fields radiated by lightning return strokes were observed with the electric field sensor of hemi-sphere type and the magnetic field sensor of loop type and their physical characteristics were statistically analyzed. The multiple stroke occurrence numbers was 2.6. In multiple lightning strokes the amplitude of peak and the time interval between the subsequent strokes were decreased as the number of the subsequent strokes increases.

  • In 2000, the number of people aged 65 and over increased to 3.37 million, accounting for 7.1% of the total population of South Korea. The elderly population will increase up to 19.3% in 2030. Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) seems to increase with age. More than 50-60% of old people complain of SDB-related signs and symptoms including awakening headache, excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, memory loss, personality changes, and depression. The influence of a mild degree of SDB upon the elderly is unclear, but moderate to severe SDB is well known to be associated with many diseases including hypertension, arrhythmia, myocardial infarction, stroke, dementia, and sudden death. Therefore, physicians should pay attention to elderly patients who complain of SDB related symptoms and signs that may not be normal signs of aging. Physicians need to become more sensitive to treat SDB in the elderly.

  • Recently, as the marine compressor power is increased, vibration problems on the marine vessel with V/W type reciprocating compressor have been occurred. A research on the balancing of marine V/W type reciprocating compressor has hardly been reported though a number of researches on the balancing of rotating machinery have been conducted. As a V/W type compressor has high capacity with long stroke, compact size and high center of gravity, It is easy to have a vibration problem by a little bit unbalanced force and moment. In this study, calculation methods for balance weight of the V/W type reciprocating compressors, which have different piston weight and asymmetry structure, are formulated. And their reliability were verified by comparing calculated balance weight with the experimental results of the real marine V/W type reciprocating compressors.

  • This paper is the second of 2 companion papers which investigate in-cylinder swirl generation characteristics in helical port engine with wide valve angle. Two wide valve-angle engines, which are same ones and have slightly different rig swirl number, were used to compare the characteristics of cylinder-flow. One intake port is deactivated to induce swirl flow. A PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) was applied to measure in-cylinder velocity field during intake stroke. The results show that the intake flow component passing through valve area near the cylinder wall is not negligible in helical port engine with wide valve angle contrary to conventional one. The effect of this velocity component on in-cylinder increases as the swirl ratio rises and compression process progresses. Consequently, this component destroys in-cylinder swirl flow completely during compression resulting in no actual swirl at the end stage of compression.

  • Japan is experiencing a most rapidly aging demographic. Despite this, the overall morbidity has been increasing due to the proportion of aging population that has increased rapidly along with the proportion of lifestyle related diseases, such as: all types of cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, etc. As a result, the number of people requiring special care has become a serious problem. In response to these emerging health issues, the Strategic Planning force proposed the National Health Promotion Actualization Initiative in the 21st Century (“Healthy Japan 21”) so that it could be achieved by the year 2010. The policies should be conducted by providing adequately as well as with active participation and collaboration, effectively networking with the various organizations dealing with health issue. The Japanese Health Promotion Act passed by the National Assembly, 2001. As well as the many individuals that contributed to the development of this national health plan.

  • In this paper, we propose the position- and size-independent handwritten on-line Korean character recognition system using multilayer neural networks which are trained with error back-propagation learning algorithm and the features of Hanguel consonants and vowels. Starting point, end point, and three vectors from starting point to end point of each stroke of characters inputted from mouse or tablet are applied as inputs of neural networks. If double consonants and vowels are separated by single consonants and vowels, all consonants and vowels have at most four strokes. Therefore, four neural networks learn the consonants and the vowels having each number of strokes. Also, we propose the algorithm of separating the consonants and vowels and constructing a character.

  • Diabetes mellitus is a worldwide epidemic with high mortality. As concern over this disease rises, the number and value of research grants awarded by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) have increased. Diabetes mellitus is classified into two groups. Type 1 diabetes requires insulin treatment, whereas type 2 diabetes, which is characterized by insulin resistance, can be treated using a variety of therapeutic approaches. Hyperglycemia is thought to be a primary factor in the onset of diabetes, although hyperlipidemia also plays a role. The major organs active in the regulation of blood glucose are the pancreas, liver, skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, intestine, and kidney. Diabetic complications are generally classified as macrovascular (e.g., stroke and heart disease) or microvascular (i.e., diabetic neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy). Several animal models of diabetes have been used to develop oral therapeutic agents, including sulfonylureas, biguanides, thiazolidinediones, acarbose, and miglitol, for both type 1 and type 2 diseases. This review provides an overview of diabetes mellitus, describes oral therapeutic agents for diabetes and their targets, and discusses new developments in diabetic drug research.

  • In this paper, a robust text detection method based on edge enhanced contrasting extremal region (CER) is proposed using stroke width transform (SWT) and tensor voting. First, the edge enhanced CER extracts a number of covariant regions, which is a stable connected component from input images. Next, SWT is created by the distance map, which is used to eliminate non-text regions. Then, these candidate text regions are verified based on tensor voting, which uses the input center point in the previous step to compute curve salience values. Finally, the connected component grouping is applied to a cluster closed to characters. The proposed method is evaluated with the ICDAR2003 and ICDAR2013 text detection competition datasets and the experiment results show high accuracy compared to previous methods.
