Encephalitis is known as a rare complication of varicella zoster virus (VZV) reactivation. It is usually regarded as a complication of a cutaneous infection in patients with impaired cellular immunity. The reported incidence of herpetic motor involvement range between 0.5 and 31%, but is possibly more frequent as the weakness is readily obscured by pain. A 53-years-old woman, who presented with severe shoulder pain, fever, headache and seizure, which developed the day after skin eruptions, also developed motor paresis 7 days after the seizure. Her cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was VZV-Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) negative, but VZV specific IgG antibody positive, and her brain MRI was found to be normal. With the early diagnosis and proper treatment, such as intravenous administration of acyclovir, stellate ganglion block and Yamamoto New Scalp Stimulation (YNSS), the patient completely recovered, without psychoneurological sequelae. Herein, we present this case, with a discussion of the relevant literature on the incidence, pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of central nervous system VZV involvement.

Parathyroid hormone has clearly emerged as the most promising new anabolic treatment for osteoporosis by increasing the activation of osteoblast. It is known that chlorella increases both bone mineral density (BMD) and the rate of bone formation. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether the chlorella dietary supplementation could effect the thyroid or parathyroid hormones associated with increased BMD and bone formation. Twenty-two postmenopausal woman were treated for four month with 4 gm of chlorella dietary supplementation per day, then assessed serum calcium,25 OH vitamin D$_3$, thyroid hormone and parathyroid hormone before and after treatment. The mean 25 OH vitamin D$_3$ and parathyroid hormone were shown to marked increases by 193% and 265% respectively, in contrast to decreases by 9.4%, 37%, 33% and 14% in serum calcium, triiodo-thyroxine, free thyroxine and thyroxine stimulation hormone. In conclusion, treatment of postmenopausal women with chlorella dietary supplementation resulted in an increase in BMD and bone formation through enhancement of parathyroid hormone and 25 OH vitamin D$_3$, and a decrease in thyroid hormones.

This study was conducted to examine the development of a new anti-inflammatory substance with potent anti-inflammatory activities that was derived from the Platycodi Radix butanol fraction. To accomplish this, the chemical structures and anti-inflammatory activities of the components were elucidated. Upon column chromatography of the tertiary subfraction, fractions 8-4-1 and 8-4-2 were identified as platycodin D and D3, respectively, following recrystallization, based on melting point (MP), infrared (IR), and positive fast atom bombardment (FAB)-mass and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectral data. Platycodin D and D3 exhibited strong anti-inflammatory activities in rats when administerd at oral doses of 12 mg/kg and 36 mg/kg, p.o., respectively. Platycodin D and D3 induced inhibitory effects on capillary vascular permeability in rats at oral doses of 16 mg/kg and 24 mg/kg, p.o., respectively, and potent inhibition of leukocyte emigration in a carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-pouch when administered at doses of 3 mg/rat and 7 mg/rat, s.c., respectively. These results verified the high antiinflammatory potency of the platycodin D and D3 components in Platycodi Radix.

Epidural anesthesia has significantly advanced in neuraxial anesthesia and analgesia. It is used for surgical anaesthesia and treatment of chronic pain. Hearing loss during or after epidural anesthesia is rare, and it is known to occur by the change of the intracranial pressure. Cerebrospinal fluid is connected with perilymph in the cochlear and vestibule that is important to hearing and balance. If the intracranial pressure is abruptly transferred to the inner ear, perilymph can be leak, that called perilymphatic fistula, dizziness, and hearing loss can occur suddenly. We report a 65-year-old woman who presented with acute onset dizziness and hearing loss during the epidural nerve block for back pain, wherein we speculated a possibility of perilymphatic fistula as the mechanism of hearing loss and dizziness. The mechanism of dizziness and hearing loss was suspected with perilymphatic fistula.

한국산(韓國産) 충생균류(蟲生菌類)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究)가 저자(著者)들에 의해서 채집(採集)된 많은 곤충(昆蟲)들 중에서 여러 종(種)들이 발견(發見)되었다. 이 논문(論文)에서 Carabidae, Endomychidae, Staphyinidae과(科)들의 곤충(昆蟲)들 중에서 발견(發見)된 이 균류(菌類)의 4속(屬) 7종(種)은 한국에서 처음으로 기록(記錄)된 것이며, 그것들은 다음과 같다. Dichomyces biformis Thax. (host: Philonthus micanticolis), D. furcifer Thax. (host: Philonthus sp.), Enathromyces indicus Thax. (host: Pheropsophus jessoensis), Laboulbenia exigua Thax. (host: Chlaenius varricornis Bates.), L. flagellata Peyr. (host: Anisodactylus punctatipennis Moraw.), L. vularis Peyr. (Host: Bembidion oxyglimma, Bates. B. thermarum Mostchulsky.) Rickia ancylopi Thax. (Ancylopus melanocephalus Oliv.)이다. 연구(硏究)된 모든 표본(漂本)들은 조선대학교사범대학생물학(朝鮮大學校師範大學生物學) 연구실(硏究室)에 보관되어 있다.

human tyrosinase (hTyr) catalyzes first and the rate limiting step in the synthesis of polymerized pigment, melanin which determines skin, hair and eye colors. Mutation of hTyr often brings about decrease of melanin production and further albinism. Meanwhile, a number of cosmetic companies providing skincare products for woman in Asia-Pacific region have tried to develop inhibitors to bright skin color for several decades. In this study, we built a 3D structure by comparative modeling technique based on the crystal structure of tyrosinase from bacillus megaterium as a template to serve structural information of hTyr. According to our model and sequence analysis of type 3 copper protein family proteins, two copper atoms of active site located deep inside are coordinated with six strictly conserved histidine residues coming from four-helix-bundle. Cavity which accommodates substrates was like funnel shape of which entrance was wide and expose to solvent. In addition, protein-substrate and protein-inhibitor complex were modeled with the guide of van der waals surface generated by in house software. Our model suggested that only phenol group or its analogs can fill the binding site near nuclear copper center because inside of binding site has narrow shape relatively. In conclusion, the results of this study may provide helpful information for designing and screening new anti-melanogensis agents.

A healthy 30-yr-old woman carrying an insect that had been caught in her living room visited the International Clinic at Severance Hospital, Seoul, in December 2007. The insect she brought was identified to be a nymph of a bedbug, Cimex lectularius, and her skin rashes looked typical bedbug's bites. Her apartment was investigated, and a dead body of a bedbug, cast skins, and hatched eggs were found in her rooms and neighbors' rooms in the same building. She was living in that apartment in Seoul for 9 months since she had moved from New Jersey, USA. We assume that the bedbugs were introduced from abroad, since there had been no report on bedbugs in Seoul for more than 2 decades at least. This is a report of a reemergence of the common bedbug, C. lectularius in Seoul, Korea.

1978년(年) 여름부터 가을까지 소백산(小白山) 및 영주지방(榮州地方)에서 탐집(探集)된 고등균류(高等菌類)와 1976년(年) 안동(安東)에서 탐집(探集)된 것중 미동정(未同定)이 었든 것을 이번에 동정(同定)하였다. 그 결과(結果) Macrocystidia의 한국(韓國) 미기록속(未記錄屬)과 10개(個)의 미기록종(未記錄種)을 다음과 같이 확인(確認)하였다. Hygrocybe turunda (Fr.) Karst., Hygrophorus lucorum Kalchbr., Macrocystidia cucumsi (Fr.) Heim var. latifolia (Lange) Imazeki et Hongo, Agaricus subrufescens Peck, Psathyrella hydrophila(Bull. ex Fr.) A.H. Smith, Stropharia rugosannulata Farlow f. lutea Hongo, Inocybe bresadolae Mass., I. multicoronata A.H. Smith, Russula farinipes Romell 과 Lactarius sakamotoi Imai.

현재 우리가 살고 있는 세상은 획일적 통일화에서 감성적 다변화 시대로, 모더니즘에서 포스트모더니즘으로, 남성의 이성에서 여성의 감성으로 변화되고 있다. 이러한 시점에서 주얼리 디자인 분야도 당연 사회와 패션의 흐름에 맞춰 변화할 필요가 있다. 현 사회의 가장 큰 시장변화의 흐름을 파악하기 위해 감성디자인과 아트마케팅이란 시장변화에 주목했으며, 이를 통해 여성적 감성과 개인의 개성이 이 두 분야에 가장 큰 주축임을 확인하였다. 본 연구자 또한 여성이기에 나의 감성과 개성을 표현할 수 있는 2가지 테마의 명화를 선정하였으며, 이를 주얼리 디자인과 접목해 새로운 감성 주얼리 디자인을 연구해 보고자 한다.
