This study examines the impact of marital conflict and conflict-coping type on the marital satisfaction of rural married person. Data were obtained from 476 who married living in rural area. The major finding of this study are as follows. First, marital conflict were shown to be low, while in terms of degree of seriousness, envirnmental, interpersonal and intrapersonal are in descending order. Also, husband perceived marital conflict higher than wife. On the whole husband and wife used more reasoning coping type. And marital satisfaction was higher in husband's side. Second, living standard and conflict-coping types influence on marital satisfaction of rural men and women who married. That is, the higher husband perceived living standard and the less they used verbal aggression behavior and physical violence behavior and then the higher they perceived marital satisfaction. And the higher wives perceived living standard, they used more reasioning behavior and then the higher they perceived marital satisfaction.
The purposes of this study were to find the general trends of aged couples' marital conflict, life satisfaction, and to examine relationships between husbands' marital conflict, life satisfaction and those of wives, and to investigate effective variables influencing on their life satisfaction. The subjects were the 218 couples over 60 years old living in Gwangju. Trained researchers interviewed the subjects with structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed with mean, sd, Cronbach' α, paired-t test, Pearson's correlation and Hierarchical Regression using SAS program. The major findings were as follows; 1. The marital conflict scores of husbands and wives were lower than median and wives' marital conflict scores were higher than those of husbands. The average scores of life satisfaction were higher than median and Husbands achieved higher scores in life satisfaction than wives. 2. Husbands' marital conflict and life satisfaction were positively related to those of wives. 3. Husbands' life satisfaction was influenced by health, self-esteem, filial support, acquaintances' support, marital conflict. Wives' life satisfaction was influenced by income, health, marital intimacy, filial support, acquaintances' support, marital conflict. Spouses marital conflict was significantly effective variable to wives' life satisfaction, but no significant to husbands'.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relations between Wives' marital satisfaction and Divorce attitude as a basis building in marital stability . A measurement tools used for this study are marital satisfaction scale, which was adapted and reproducted from Dyadic Adjustment Scale(DAS) developed by Spanier and Divorce attitude Scale, which was developed by researcher refer to preceding study connected with a cause of divorce. The subjects were 354 married women dwelling in Seoul. Statistical methods such as frequency, percentile. mean , standard deviation, one way ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation were used for data analysis. The results of this study are as follows; 1) there is the tendency to high marital satisfaction group rather more than low marital satisfaction group and to permissional attitude group rather more than negative attitude group about divorce attitude. 2) There was difference in marital satisfaction by number of children, wives's educational level, parents marriage happiness. While, there was no difference in marital satisfaction by length of marriage, family income, wives employments status, marriage pattern. 3) There was partially difference in wives' attitude toward divorce by wives educational level, family income. Both there was no difference in wives attitude toward divorce by the other factors. 4) wives' attitude toward divorce correlates with marital satisfaction. The correlation coefficients is 283 significantly of .001 level. The more satisfaction wife feels about her own matrimony. the more negative a attitude she has toward divorce. This menas that attitude toward divorce depends upon their matrimony. 5) The four type of marital stability are as follows; high marital stability type, high subjective unstability type, high objective unstability type, high marital unstability type.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of role satisfaction and role strain of employed wives on their marital satisfaction. Data were collected from 297 employed wives who are also mothers and reside in the city of Seoul and the province of Gyeonggi-do. Our findings are also as follows: First, employed wives showed a relatively high level of marital satisfaction. Second, when employed wives experienced less role strain, they experienced more role satisfaction. At the same time, when employed wives experienced greater role satisfaction, they also experienced greater marital satisfaction. It was also found that when employed wives experienced greater role strain they experienced less marital satisfaction. Third, our analysis partially confirmed that there were only three variables that significantly affected marital satisfaction; the age of the employed wife, the level of role satisfaction and the level of role strain.
This study is to compare the effects of personality characteristics on marital quality of the husband and the wife. Marital quality was measured in two aspects: marital satisfaction and marital conflict. At the first step of the regression analysis, socio-demographic variables were entered, at the second step, variables of personality characteristics, and at the third step, variables of personality characteristics of the spouse were added. Age group of 35 and under is higher in marital satisfaction or lower in marital conflict than that of 36 to 40. People who grew up in Chungchung area are lower in marital satisfaction compared to those who grew up in Seoul and adjacent area, and those who grew up in Chunla area are higher in marital satisfaction. Marital conflict increases when people are less educated. Marital conflict decreases when the husband has high income. Religion is related to marital satisfaction and marital conflict of the husband. Stability is related to both marital satisfaction and marital conflict. Sociability of the wife is related to marital satisfaction and marital conflict of the husband, and responsibility of the wife is related to her own marital conflict. Responsibility of the husband is related to marital conflict of the wife. This result shows that the husband is expected to perform the instrumental role and the wife the expressive role. In, conclusion, these results should be considered when family life education programs for couples are constructed. First, family life cycle needs to be considered when family life education programs are offered. Second, regional differences in family culture should be put into consideration. Third, the idea that conjugal role relationships can be flexible needs to be included in family life education programs. Fourth, programs to improve stability, responsibility and sociability are needed for wives. Fifth, programs to improve stability and responsibility should be offered in work settings for husbands.
The purpose of this study was to identify what factors are associated with marital satisfaction of the foreign wives who live in small town. Data for the study were based on a snowball sampling of 101 foreign wives who married to Korean husbands and had residence in Changwon and Masan city, Gyeongnam, Korea. The respondents reported higher levels of marital satisfaction and lower levels of marital hardship. To identify the variables affecting marital satisfaction, a regression analysis was conducted. Independent variables included age difference, educational difference, monthly income, conformity of information about husband, marital hardship, relationship with parents-in-law and taking class with husband. While conformity of information about husband, marital hardship and taking class with husband had strong effects on marital satisfaction of the foreign wives, age difference, educational difference, monthly income and relationship with parents-in-law didn't show the significant effects on the marital satisfaction of the foreign wives.
The purposes of this study are to investigate marital satisfaction according to demographic characteristic, division of household labor, and awareness of gender discrimination, and to explore influences of demographic and other variables on marital satisfaction. Social statistics survey data which collected in 1998 by ministry of statistics were used for secondary analysis of this study. Marital satisfaction was measured by questionnaire which was consisted in 7 items, including satisfaction with general family life, relationship with their own parent and parent-in-law, relationship with brothers and sisters, relationship with their children, and economic living status. These are measured by 5-point Likert scale. Independent variables are age, education, employment status, having their own house or not, No. of children under school age, parents living or not, perception of sexual discrimination, and division of household labor. The findings of this study show that there are significant differences of marital satisfaction by all independents variables, and all independent variables except employment have significant influences on marital satisfaction. People who are younger, received higher education, have their own house, have more children under schoolage and whose parent are living in the world, show higher marital satisfaction. The more husbands participate to household labor, the better marital satisfaction. In case of perception of sexual discrimination, main effect is not significant, but interaction effect with age is significant. Interaction effect between age and education is also significant. 32.52% of the variance in marital satisfaction were accounted for by these variables.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of couples' self-differentiation by marital satisfaction according to couple's gender. The participants of the present study were 728 couples who lived in Chonbuk province. The data were collected by self-administered questionnaire method. Self-differentiation scale was consisted of such factors as emotional reactivity, I-position, emotional cut-off and fusion with others. The results of this research were as follows: First, there was significant difference in the level of total self-differentiation between husbands and wives. Second, there was significant difference in the levels of marital conflict and of marital satisfaction to levels of self differentiation. Third, self differentiation in both husbands and wives had an direct effect on marital satisfaction and stability through marital conflict. Fourth, marital conflict in both husbands and wives had a direct effect on marital satisfaction.
The purpose of this study is to investigate communication style & communication in the family and marital satisfaction. This study focuses on the following aspects: 1) to find out which variables of background variables(oe, sociodemographic variables & communication styles) have effect on communica-tion and marital satisfaction in the family. 2) to find out the relationships between communication in the family and marital satisfaction. 3) to find out the independent influence of background variables on marital satisfaction. This study is designed to understand marital relationships of the rural couples in Korea. The primary purposes of this study are to examine the relationship between marital satisfaction and role evaluation of the spouse and to construct a path model in which shows the relationships among background variables, role evaluation of the spouse and marital satisfaction. Structured guestionnaires from 435 couples with school-age children and teenagers living in rural area are analyzed in this study. The major findings are as follows : 1. Factor analysis of the role evaluation of the spouse results I 4 factors for both husbands and wives; emotional support-sexual role child socialization-economic role, kinship role and housekeeping role. 2. The most important factor influencing the marital satisfaction is the role evaluation of the spouse o emotional support-sexual relation. While the number of children, and role evaluations of the spouse influence directly on the marital satisfaction of the wives, age, level of education, level of income and husband's occupation influence indirectly through role evaluations of the spouse on that of wives. 3. For husbands, family life cycle and their occupation influence indirectly on the marital satisfaction of the husbands and the marital satisfaction of them is also mediated by role evaluations of the wieves. Level of income of the family not only influences directly on marital satisfaction but influences on it indirectly. 4. Marital satisfaction is mediated by role evaluations of the spouse. The role evaluation of the spouse on emotional support-sexual relation has the most powerful effect on the marital satisfaction for both wives and husbands. About 60 percent of the variance in the marital satisfaction of rural couples can be explained by the role evaluation of the spouse. therefore, the result of the result of the study indicates that the role evaluation of the spouse on emotional support-sexual relation plays a significant part in determining the marital satisfaction of rural couples.
