This study was conducted to develop the regulating methods for the optimal harvest stage of new sprout for woody plants, and to clarify the effects of storage condition and period on the growth of new sprout formed of Aralia elata cv. 'Jeongkwang'. Japanese angelica tree were collected in the Jangheung district of Jeonnam on 20. March, 2005, and those cut branches were stored at $5{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ and 80 to 90% of the relative humidity, and were cut in water. Survival rate of cut branches for Aralia elata cv. 'Jeongkwang' was significantly increased when that was used for the cutting after the collection with no storage. And those survival rate was much more increased when that was stored at 80 to 90% of relative humidity than 40 to 50% of relative humidity. Number of new sprouts formed which were not stored immediately after the collection 3.2 to 3.4, and that were stored at cold storage room before cutting and cut on 1. June and 1. August were 5.1 to 5.3. Leaf growth of cut branches cut in water on 20. March started at ten days after cutting, and that on 1. June and 1. August at one to two days after cutting. Slow and mature sprout growth of Aralia elata cv. 'Jeongkwang' which were cut in water were different by the cold storage periods. Nineteen days were needed for the mature growth of sprout when cut in water on 20. March, and thirteen days on 1. August.
Characteristic of seed for Sageretia thea fruits collected from the habitat of harvest season in Jeju and their germination ratio in different temperatures were considered. The average weight was 0.2 g, average diameter was 7.2 mm, average length was 6.5 mm, and size distribution range was 5.1 ~ 10.0 mm. The number of seeds per fruit was 1.8, and 1000 grain weight was 7.77 g with diameter of 3.7 mm and thickness of 1.7 mm in size. The fruit maturation was investigated to be from April 27 to June 1, when the best maturation period was about a week, May 11 to May 18. Also, the fruits grown on May 4 to May 11 were seen to have the bigger in transverse size and weight with a tendency of the earlier maturation date has the greater the number of seeds. S. thea seeds pretreated for 24 hours at $50^{\circ}C$ were not germinated, while most of those pretreated for 24 hours at $4^{\circ}C$ were successfully germinated at any degree of temperature (except at a temperature of $10^{\circ}C$). Particularly, the highest germination rate of 55% was made at $15^{\circ}C$, and plumule and radicle were best grown within the temperature range of $25^{\circ}C$.
For the establishment of efficient method of potassium topdressing on rice the optimum time and amount were investigated and discussed on the basis of available data from nutriophysiological studies, soil characteristics and fertilizer trials in fields. The followings were pointed out. 1. According to yield rice plants require more potassium around heading under water culture. 2. Potassium involves in harvest index, filled grain ratio, grain weight and number of spikelets per panicle. 3. Potassium is lost after heading in most fields in spite of highest requirement during this period. 4. The higher $K_2O/N$ ratio in straw at harvest is, the higher the yield. 5. Relatively low efficiency of potassium fertilizer under the field condition may be due to improper application method rather than natural supply from soil and irrigation water. 6. Appropriate topdressing time appears at in effective tillering stage for the prevention of nitrogen excess and at 15 to 20 days after transplanting, ear formation stage and 5 days after heading for the prevention of soil reduction damage. Two times of topdressing for clayey soil and three times for sandy soil seems reasonable in practice together with nitrogen topdressing, 7. The reasonable ratio basal to topdressing of potassium fertlizer seems to be 2/3 and $N/K_2O$ ratio of fertilization for ear formation stage appeared also as 2/3.
In this study, we evaluated the changes of fruit quality indices during fruit development and ripening in Korean new pear cultivar 'Wonhwang' and 'Whasan' to determine appropriate harvest time and to enhance the marketability. The fruit of each cultivar harvested from 100 days after full bloom (DAFB) to 135 and 150 DAFB in 'Wonhwang' and 'Whasan', respectively. The fruit growth of both cultivars showed a typical single sigmoidal pattern. Flesh firmness of two cultivars decreased continuously with fruit development and ripening, reaching a final level of about 2.6 kgF at harvest stage. The starch content of fruit sap was much higher in the fruits of early development stage than the later stage of fruit ripening. In 'Wonhwang' pears, the starch level decreased coincide with fruit ripening (130 DAFB), while that of 'Whasan' decreased from very early stage of fruit development (120 DAFB), 30 days before full ripe. 'Whasan' pear showed much lower acidity level of about 0.13% during fruit development and ripening period compared with that of 'Wonhwang'. Therefore, the ratio of soluble solids to total acidity (TSS/acid) increased gradually with fruit development and ripening, reaching a final level of 80 and 98 in 'Wonhwang' and 'Whasan', respectively. There were no climateric rise of fruit respiration during fruit ripening periods in two oriental pear cultivar. The changes of skin color difference including hunter vale $a^*$ which means loss of green color occurred only after onset of ripening in two cultivars.
Disease occurrence and development of gray blight of tea (Camellia sinensis) were investigated. Higher incidences and more severe damage by gray blight were found in Japanese tea variety Yabukita than the Korean local variety. In Yabukita, Pestalotiopsis longiseta was more frequently observed on the diseased leaves than P. theae but vice versa in the Korean local variety. This indicates that there was the varietal difference in the distribution of fungal species of gray blight pathogens. Both varieties were most severely damaged during the third harvest period with weather conditions of high temperature and humidity favorable to the disease. Presence of the tea brown blight fungus Glomerella cingulata on the margin of gray blight lesion at the late stahe suggested that the pathogenic fungi of tea gray blight were replaced by the brown blight fungus during the disease development.
The plant growth and net production, the nitrogen uptake and recycling, the nitrogen mobility and allocation to each organ, and the nitrogen utility from the Italian rye grass field during the population development were analyzed in comparison with different clipping treatments. The maximum dry matter standing crop and nitrogen quantity of harvest increased significantly, however, the annual amounts of dry matter and nitrogen assimilation showed little variations with increasing clipping frequencies. Plants treated with frequent clippings allocated relatively more nitrogen to leaves and less to roots during the experimental period. The amount of recycling of nitrogen decreased considerably due to frequent clippings. The annual averages of nitrogen utility indices changed in inverse relation to the nitrogen availability; such as 63, 58, 44 and 35 for C, A, M and J plots, respectively.

Germination characters of the lettuce seed that received photoperiodic pretreatments of low or high temperature from the flowering to harvest. MSU-15 seed, one of the lettuce cultivars used, having high dark germination, was modified to low dark germination by the long-day treatments during the seed formation. Light-requiring MSU-16 seed was modified to the dark-germination seed by high temperature given at the seed formation period. Above results suggest that the environmental conditions given to an immature seed adhered to a mother plant bring about some modification to its native germination habit. I confirmed that the spectral quality of light could influence the phytochrome system which controlled germination characters of the progeny of lettuce seed ; plants grown in light rich in far-red energies produced light-requiring seed, but those grown in high deficient in far-red energies produced dark germination seed.
The multi-year production cycle for ginseng can be rapidly depreciated by inferior post-harvest activities. This research examines the character of high temperature drying regimes for North American ginseng root to assist management decision making. The objective is a very rapid drying regime, that will not result in physical or chemical damage to the root and that would not alter the actual dry root weight. Research is presented using drying temperatures of 55, 70 and 105 C. Temperatures above these rapidly cause substantive physical damage to the root samples and seriously compromise the dry root values determined. Temperatures below these behaved quite similar to actual dryer regimes (approximately 38 C). Laboratory results indicate that there are differences between the three temperature regimes tested. Careful usage of the 70 C regime, over a period of two to three days in a convection drying oven, has distinct merit.
Thirty-day-old rice seedlings, IR-20 variety were transplanted into the experimental plots and were sprayed with endosulfan (35% EC) after 52 days at the rate of 0.64 kg a.i/ha. Residues of endosulfan in the plant, soil, and water were found to decrease steadily upto 15 days. A second application of the pesticide was made on the 31st day and the plant was harvested on 56th day after the first application. The residue level on hay and grains was 0.7 ${\mu}g/g$. This level is seven times higher than FAO/WHO-prescribed tolerance level of 0.1 ${\mu}g/g$. Metabolites of endosulfan were traced out in plants, soil, and water during the pre- and post-harvest period.
This study was performed to analyze the variation of various physicochemical factors related to the freshness of apple and tomato during post-harvest period. The total soluble solids content, uronic acid content, cell surface roughness. density, rupture deformation and rupture force were measured for 39 days at 7-day intervals for apple and for 11 days at 2-day intervals for tomato. respectively. The cell surface roughness of apple increased with the elapsed time, while the rupture force decreased. In case of tomato, uronic acid content, density and rupture deformation increased with the elapsed time whereas the rupture force decreased. Both apple and tomato exhibited the significant correlations among those physicochemical factors.
