Total of 325 estuaries in Korea were surveyed to analyze the effect of presence of sluice gate on the estuary environment and fish community from 2016 to 2018. Fish community in closed and open estuaries showed differences generally, and the relative abundance (RA) of primary freshwater species in the closed and migratory species in the open estuaries were high. The result of classifying species by habitat characteristics in closed and open estuaries showed similar tendencies at the estuaries of south sea and west sea. The relative abundances of primary freshwater species in the closed estuaries at the estuaries of south sea and west sea were the highest, but estuarine and migratory species were high in both closed and open estuaries at the estuaries of east sea. Primary freshwater species showed higher abundances in the closed estuaries with reduced salinity due to blocking of seawater since they are not resistant to salt. However, primary freshwater species in open estuaries at east sea was higher than that of the closed estuaries, which is considered to be the result of reflecting the characteristics (tide, sand bar, etc.) of the east sea. Korea Estuary Fish Assessment Index (KEFAI) was showed to be higher at open estuaries than closed in all sea areas (T-test, P<0.001), the highest KEFAI was observed in closed estuaries at south sea, and open estuaries in east sea. Fish community of closed and open estuaries in each sea areas showed statistically significant differences (PERMANOVA, East, Pseudo-F=3.0198, P=0.002; South, Pseudo-F=22.00, P=0.001; West, Pseudo-F=14.067, P=0.001). Fish assemblage similarity by sea areas showed a significant differences on fish community in closed and open estuaries at east sea, south sea, and west sea (SIMPER, Group dissimilarity, 85.85%, 88.36%, and 88.05%). This study provided information on the characteristics and distribution of fish community according to the types of estuaries. The results of this study can be used as a reference for establishing appropriate management plans according to the sea areas and type in the management and restoration of estuaries for future.
We studied the mineral composition and mineral distribution pattern of 131 surface sediments collected at the cruise in 2000 and 2007 from Southeastern Yellow Sea, South Sea of Korea and Southern part of Jeju Island. Mineral compositions of surface sediments were determined using the quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis. Surface sediments were composed of rock forming minerals (quartz 37.4%, plagioclase 11.7%, alkali feldspar 5.5%, hornblende 3.1%), clay minerals (illite 19.2%, chlorite 4.7%, kaolinite 1.8%) and carbonate minerals (calcite 10.7%, aragonite 3.4%). Distribution of clay minerals is very similar with fine-grained sediments, and especially same as the distribution of HSMD (Hucksan Mudbelt Deposit), SSKMD (South Sea of Korea Mudbelt Deposit) and JJMD (Jeju Mudbelt Deposit). The coarse sediment seemed to be relic sediment during the last glacial maximum and mainly consisted of rock forming minerals. Whereas the fine sediments mainly composed of clay minerals. Based on the clay mineral composition, main ocean current and geographical factor, HSMD and SSKMD might have derived from the rivers around the Korean Peninsula. However, JJMD is complex mudbelt deposit, which formed by Korean rivers and oceanic sediments.
High-resolution (3.5 kHz) subbottom profiles were analyzed in order to reveal sedimentation pattern of late Quaternary in the northern South Shetland continental margin and the South Scotia Sea, Antarctica. On the basis of clarity, continuity and geometry of surface and subbottom echoes together with seafloor topography, high-resolution echo characters are classified into eight echo types which represent rock basements (echo type III-1), coarse-grained subglacial till or moraine (echo type I-1), slides/slumps (echo type IV), debris-flow deposits (echo types II-3 and III-2), and bottom-current deposits (echo types I-2, II-1 and II-2). Subglacial till or moraine (echo type I-1) is mostly present in the lower continental shelf and upper continental slope of the northern South Shetland continental margin, which changes downslope to slides/slumps (echo type IV) and debris-flow deposits (echo types II-3 and III-2) in the middle to lower continental slope. This distribution suggests that the continental slopes of the northern South Shetland continental margin were mostly affected by downslope gravitational processes. Further downslope, bottom-current sediments (echo type I-2) deposited by the southwestward flowing Antarctic Deep Water (ADW) occur at the South Shetland Trench, reflecting an Interaction between mass flows and bottom currents in the area. In contrast to the northern South Shetland continental margin, the South Scotia Sea is dominated by bottom-current deposits (echo types II-1 and II-2), indicating that the sedimentation was mostly controlled by the westward flowing ADW. Flow intensity of the ADW has increased in the relative topographic highs, forming thin covers of coarse-grained contourites (echo type II-1), whereas it has decreased in the relative topographic lows, depositing thick, fine-grained contourites (echo type II-2). The poor development of wave geometry in the fine-grained bottom-current deposits (echo type II-2) is suggestive of the unsteady nature of the ADW flow.

Sea level variations and sea surface circulations inthe Korean seas were observed by Topex/Poseidon altimeter data from 1993 through 1997. In sea level variations, the West and South Sea showed relatively high variations with comparison to the East Sea. Then, the northern and southern area in the West Sea showed the range of 20-30cm and 18-24cm, and the northern west of Jeju island and the southern west of Tsushima island in the South Sea showed the range of 15-20cm and 10-15cm, respectively. High variations in the West Sea was results to the inflow in sea surface of Yellow Sea Warm Current (YSWC) and bottom topography. Sea level variations in the South Sea was due to two branch currents (Jeju Warm Current and East Korea Warm Current) originated from Kuroshio Current (KC). In sea surface circulations, there existed remarkably three eddies circulations in the East Sea that are mainly connected with North Korea Cold Current (NKCC), East Korea Warm Current (EKWC) and Tushima Warm Current (TWC). Their eddies are caused basically to the influence of currents in sea surface circulations; Cyclone (0.03 cm/sec) in the Wonsan bay on shore with NKCC, and anticyclone (0.06 cm/sec) in the southwestern area of Ulleung island with EKWC, and cyclone (0.01 cm/set) in the northeastern area of Tushima island with TWC, respectively.
Topex/Poseidon sea surface heights are compared to tide gauge sea levels in the South Indian Ocean in the period of January 1993 to December 1995. A user's handbook (AVISO) for processing sea surface height data was used in this study. Topex/Poseidon sea surface heights were obtained from satellite data at the proximity of tide gauge stations. These data were reproduced by a linear interpolation with the interval of 10 days and were processed by the Gaussian filter with a 60-day window. The tide gauge sea levels were obtained in the same manner as the satellite data. The main results on RMS (Root-Mean-Square) and CORR (CORRelation coefficient) in our study were shown as follows: 1) on the characteristics between two data (in-situ and model data), the results (RMS=2.96 cm & CORR=$92\%$ in the Amsterdam plateau, and RMS=3.45 cm & CORR=$59\%$ in the Crozet plateau) of the comparison of Topex/Poseidon sea surface heights with tide gauge sea levels, which was calculated by in-situ data of obsewed station showed generally low values in RMS and high values in CORR against to the results (RMS=4.69 cm & CORR=$79\%$ in the Amsterdam plateau, and RMS= 6.29 cm & CORR= $49\%$ in the Crozet plateau) of the comparison of Topex/Poseidon sea surface heights with tide gauge sea levels, which was calculated by model data of ECMWF (European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasting), and 2) on the characteristics between two areas (Kerguelen plateau and island), the results (RMS=3.28 cm & CORR= $54\%$ in the Kerguelen plateau) of open sea area showed low values in RMS and high values in CORR against to the results (RMS= 5.71 cm & CORR=$38\%$ in the Kerguelen island) of coast area, respectively.
Temporal variation of the natural planktonic community in the Southern Sea of Korea was investigated by using low floating enclosed bags (3.2m deep and 2,500 liter) in order to understand the effect of enriched nitrate on the planktonic community in the spring (March-April) of 2002. Prior to beginning the incubation, the bags were placed in two different concentrations of nitrate, which consisted of control (ambient water) and experimental mesocosms (final concentration of $12{\mu}M$). The nitrate concentration in the experimental mesocosms remained significantly higher than those in control mesocosms throughout the study period (ANOYA, p<0.001). Following the addition of nitrate, abundance and chi-a concentration of phytoplankton peaked on Day 1, when diatoms established the peak in the experimental mesocosms. Diatoms consisted mainly of Thalasxiosira decipiens, Pseudo-nitzschia pungem, Leptocylindrus danicu, Thalassionema nitzschioides, Chaetoceros pseudocrinitus and Actinoptychus senariu. However, the peak did not lead to the difference in abundance and composition of phytoplankton between control and experimental mesocosms during the study period. The dinoflagellates began to increase soon after the diatoms decreased in all mesocosms. Copepods, as a dominant group in the rnosozooplankton community, showed no immediate peak in relation to the nitrate addition, but only their own developmental process from the eggs to adult stage during the study period. The bottom-up control from enriched nitrate via phytoplankton to adult copepods was not distinguished in terms of the abundance of the planktonic community. This might stem from the relatively low nitrate availability of phytoplankton at no N-limited seawater and the weak coupling between rapidly sunken diatoms and copepods through the water column.
Storm surges caused by typhoon Billie, 28 Aug. ∼ 2 Sep. 1970, on the west and south coasts of Korea are studied with the tidal data. Tracks and frequencies of the typhoons which affected the Korean peninsula and the yearly maximum tidal deviation at tide stations for the past twelve years are also reviewed. It is assumed that most of the typhoons affecting the Korea peninsula cause variations of sea level along almost all of the coast of Korea. Maximum storm surges at each tide station on the south coast appeared to be caused by typhoons during the summer, and by the north westerly monsoon and extraordinary cyclones on the west coast during spring and winter. In the coastal waters of the west coast where depths are shallower and the bottom configuration is flat, sea level variation is mostly caused by atmospheric pressure and wind effect. When a typhoon travels as in case of typhoon Billie, sea level ascends generally on the south coast and it descends on the west coast before the typhoon approaches near to the coasts. Considering the large tidal range on the western and southern coasts, it is assumed that the extraordinary destructive surges can be occurred when the tide is high water. Reviewing the monthly mean sea level variations on the each coast, hazards to be caused by storm surges can more fluently occur during the summer.
23 tropical cyclones of tropical storm(TS) intensity or higher formed in the western North Pacific and the South China Sea in 2006. The total number is less than the 30-year $(1971{\sim}2000)$ average frequency of 26.7, Out of 23, 15 cyclones reached typhoon(TY) intensity, three severe tropical storm(STS) intensity, and five TS intensity. The tropical cyclone season in 2006 began in May with the formation of CHANCHU(0601). While convective activity was slightly inactive around the Philippines from late June to early August. In addition, subtropical high was more enhanced than normal over the south of Japan from May to early August. Consequently, most tropical cyclones formed over the sea east of the Philippines after late June, and many of them moved westwards to China. CHANCHU(0601), BILIS(0604), KAEMI(0605), PRAPIROON(0606) and SAOMI(0608) brought damage to China, the Philippines, and Vietnam. On the other hand, EWINIAR(0603) moved northwards and hit the Republic of Korea, causing damage to the country From late August to early September, convective activity was temporarily inactive over the sea east of the Philippines. However, it turned active again after late September. Subtropical high was weak over the south of Japan after late August. Therefore, most tropical cyclones formed over the sea east of the Philippines and moved northwards. WUKONG(0610) and SHANSHAN(0613) hit Japan to bring damage to the country. On the other hand, XANGSANE(0615) and CIMARON(0619) moved westwards in the South China Sea, causing damage to the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. In addition, IOKE(0612) was the first namded cyclone formed in the central North Pacific and moved westwards across longitude 180 degrees east after HUKO(0224).
In order to investigate the distribution of suspended particulate matter of the surface water in the South Sea of Korea in early winter, the cruise results during 2 to 8 December 2004 were analyzed in relation to the hydrography. The front was formed along the line connecting between Tsushima and Cheju Islands, which divided the water into two water masses; the coastal water with for temperature and for salinity, and the Tsushima Warm Current Water with high temperature and high salinity. In the coastal water the suspended particulte matter was 5.0-6.5 mg/l, while in the oceanic water suspended particulate matter was 4.5-5.0 mg/l. The coastal water showed higher mixing effects, compared to the oceanic area where vertical stratification was clearly formed. These indicate that the distribution of suspended particulate matter was affected by the stratification or mixing of the water column. Also it is suggested that the mixing effects of sea surface cooling and rind play an important role on the distribution of suspended particulate matter in the South Sea of Korea in winter time.

We determined the morphologic characteristics (body weight and degree of abdomen inflation) of the red spotted grouper, Epinephelus akaara, mother fish producing healthy eggs. Experimental fish were chosen from fish reared in a sea cage. The fish were divided into four size groups by body weight: 400~600, 600~800, 800~1,000, and 1,000~1,200 g and four stages (I~IV) of the degree of abdomen inflation. After hormone treatment, we observed the amount of ovulation-induced eggs, and rates of buoyancy, fertilization, embryonic survival, and hatching. As a result, mother fish with a body weight of 600 g or more spawned, and the fertilization rate, embryonic survival rate, and hatching rate were high in the 800~1,000 g range, thus showing effective ovulation induction. As a result of dividing the degree of abdomen inflation based on the anal fin of the mother fish into I-IV stages and determining hormone treatment time, the GSI was $0.9{\pm}0.2%$ at stage I, $2.3{\pm}0.2%$ at stage II, $5.6{\pm0.2%$ at stage III, and $7.9{\pm}0.9%$ at stage IV. The flotation rate and hatching rate were highest at stage III, and the fertilization rate and embryonic survival rate were highest at stage IV. Therefore, in terms of egg quality, the amount of eggs collected per mother fish, maturation, and histology were different depending on the degree of abdomen inflation. At stage III, where the abdomen inflation degree of the mother fish was based on the basal part of the dorsal fin relative to the height of the anal fin was 1, the egg quality was highest.
