  • This study deals with the performance evaluation of writing for designing handwriting instruments ergonomically. Experimental tests were executed on ballpoint pen., felt-tip pen, pencil, sharp-pencil, and fountain pen for ease of use and reduction of the muscles fatigue. The writing time and the degree of comfort of writing by subjects were measured on the diameters of five writing instruments. The results indicated that the ballpoint pen was rated significantly superior to the others in writing speed attribute and the instrument with the least fatigue was the fountain pen. There was a significant interaction effect between the types of instruments and their size in diameters. The diameter of instruments for considering time and comfort together was verified that the size of 9.5mm was efficient for ballpoint pen, the size of 8.1mm for felt-tip pen, the size of 7.5mm for pencil, the size of 8.2mm for sharp-pencil, and the size of 9.1mm for fountain pen.

  • The effect of morphological development in PET/PEN blending on the physical properties of PET/PEN blend film as a flexible substrate was investigated. The two phase morphology was obtained in PET/PEN blends and it caused the improvement of dimensional stability of PET/PEN blend as a flexible substrate. The two phase morphology and crystallinity of PET/PEN blends could be controlled by the transesterification between PET and PEN during the film processing and this macroscopic structural development affected the dimensional stability of PET/PEN blend films. Better dimensional stability was obtained with increasing crystallinity and decreasing the level of transesterification.

  • The effect of transesterification on the rheological property of poly(ethylene naphthalate)/poly(butylene tore-phthalate) (PEN/PBT) blends has been investigated. The melt viscosity of PEN/PBT blends decreased with increasing PBT content due to the relatively low melt viscosity of PBT as well as introducing ransesterification between PEN and PBT Further melt viscosity decrease was achieved by the thermal annealing which caused both the chain scission and the acceleration of transesterfication. Calcium stearate (CaST) was applied as a lubricant in order to lower the melt viscosity of PEN and it was found that CaST was acting as the catalyst of transesterification as well. In general, reactive melt blending of PEN and PBT by transesterification resulted in the decrease of molecular weight of PEN and PBT, as a result, the loss of mechanical properties in PEN/PET blend was inevitable.

  • The lowering of melt viscosity has been investigated to achieve the processability enhancement in poly(ethylene naphthalate) (PEN) melt processing by the reactive melt blending with poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and introducing lubricant as well. CaST lubricant resulted in the lowering of PEN melt viscosity but noticeable mechanical property drop was found in PEN with more than $2wt\%$ of lubricant due to the acceleration of thermal degradation by excess lubricant. PEN/PET (90/10) blend has less melt viscosity than PEN and transesterification between two polymers caused the additional viscosity depression. further viscosity lowering was found in PEN/PET blend with CaST since CaST is acting as the catalyst of transesterification as well as a lubricant in PEN/PET blend.

  • In the northwestern Pacific region, the pen shell (Atrina pectinata) is a widely distributed bivalve and economically important in fisheries. Recently, stock of this species has been greatly reduced due to overexploitation and marine pollution, which arouses interest in conservation. Studies on genetic and taxonomic entities of pen shells have not been tried in Korea, which makes difficult to take measures for effective conservation of this marine resource. In this study, we investigated mitochondrial genetic polymorphism of pen shells collected from 4 locations in Korea and Japan using cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene sequences. A total of 39 haplotypes were identified among 86 individuals of pen shell. Although only 5 haplotypes were shared, no significant genetic differentiation was observed between Korean and Japanese populations. These results suggest that pen shell populations of these regions share an ancestral population which might have experienced expansion during the Pleistocene, but gene flow must have been highly restricted after expansion.

  • It is generally agreed that transesterification provides the, copolymer in the melt blending of poly(ethylene naphthalate) (PEN) and poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL). Effects of the conditions of transesterification reaction and catalyst on the degree of randomness and average sequence length of PEN/PCL blends were investigated and results were used to interpret the biodegradability of PEN/PCL blends. It was found that degree of randomness values of obtained copolymer lied between 0 and 1, and it indicated that this blend consisted with physical blends of PEN/PCL and PEN/PCL block copolymers. The degree of randomness reached almost 1 which is the theoretical value of random copolymers and the average sequence length became shorter by the further transesterification reaction. In additions, it was found that the increase of copolymers, especially random copolymers reduced the biodegradability in PEN/PCL blends.

  • The effect of chain orientation and relaxation on the characteristics of poly(ethylene naphthalate) (PEN) flexible substrate has been studied. It was found that the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of PEN under $100^{\circ}C$ decreased as low as $20ppm/^{\circ}C$ due to the lowering of chain mobility by chain orientation. The thermal shrinkage was found to appear near glass transition temperature because of chain relaxation. It could be minimized by thermal annealing but CTE increased again up to $70ppm/^{\circ}C$ which was 65% of intrinsic CTE of PEN. Unstrained thermal annealing made possible to avoid the thermal shrinkage with maintaining low CTE obtained by chain orientation. Chain orientation did not affect the optical transmittance; however, thermal annealing caused the decrease of optical transmittance up to 5%. This was understood by the minor crystallization due to the thermal annealing near glass transition temperature.

  • A study on capacitive characteristics of stylus pen for touch panel are progressed in this paper. Also the main factors for capacitive sensitivity are studied. Namely, highly sensitive stylus pen which can be applied to capacitive touch panel are studied based on the analysis of materials and process conditions regardless of pattern shapes. Stylus pen was made of PDMS(Poly-Di-Methyl-Siloxane) and conductive metal powders which does not damage the touch panel surface. We tried to get the advantages of both the properties of soft PDMS and conductive metal powders. We found that potential difference of capacitance change with conductivity of the composite materials(PDMS + metal powders) it implies that during touch process, large voltage difference can be caused by the high conductive materials of stylus pen. Stylus pen made by PDMS with mixed with Ag powders which has large conductivity shows more capacitance change of 1 pF than PDMS with other materials of Ni or C powders.

  • Current touch pen requires the special equipments to detect a touch and its price increases in proportion to the screen size. In this paper, we propose a method for detecting a touch and implementing a pen using the depth information. The proposed method obtains a background depth image using a depth camera and extracts an object by comparing a captured depth image with the background depth image. Also, we determine a touch if the depth value of the object is the same as the background and then provide the pen event. Using this method, we can implement a cheaper and more convenient touch pen.
