A townscape has both aspects of seeing and living. However, the main streams of townscape making have been mostly focused on the former perspective so far. Such trends are apt to lack the realities of urban living. In this view, a prerequisite to complement the existing formalistic view with this realistic one is needed in order to accomplish the holistic characteristics of a townscape. Many city governments of Korea are currently trying to improve the quality of living quarters by providing diverse kinds of open spaces such as vest-pocket parks, pedestrian-friendly streets, and supporting the residents participatory village making. In this context, this paper will review the possibilities of the realistic approaches in townscape making by examining some current cases being tried in Korea cities. In conclusion some main issues to be solved in future can be listed as the conflict between general citizen′s view and the residents′ view", the conflict between social aspects and aesthetical aspects" and the conflict between the tradition and the vernacular reality in design".

This study examines the limitations of existing crime mapping that relies mainly on reported crime data, suggests a crime mapping method based on experts' and users' assessments of a neighborhood environment as an alternative approach, and conducts a case study on a real-world site by applying the suggested approach. According to the results of the case analysis, while the areas adjoining arterial roads with heavy pedestrian traffic were shown as high crime risk areas in the crime map based on actual reported crime data, the areas adjoining local roads with low pedestrian traffic were high-risk areas in the crime risk area map based on experts' and residents' evaluations. This study makes a contribution to the field in that it demonstrates the detailed application process of crime risk area mapping according experts' and residents' evaluations, compares the results with those of an existing crime map, and finally shows that the former can function as a complement to the latter.

The corrosion of RC structures demonstrates very complicated forms of deterioration intermingled together but all pointing to a decrease in the durability of RC structures due to the corrosion of reinforcing bars. Until now, nondestructive techniques, such as half-cell potential and polarization resistance, have been widely available in the world. The former provides information on the probability of corrosion while the latter is associated with information concerning corrosion rates. Inversion by the boundary element method (IBEM) was developed for considering concrete resistivity. The applicability of the procedure was examined through a numerical analysis and electrolytic tests for RC slabs. A distribution in such concrete resistivity is relatively inhomogeneous including cracks on the surface of slabs. Regarding cracks in concrete, the relative coefficient of concrete resistance was introduced to perform its analysis. Further, the procedure will be developed to identify the corroded region visually using 3-D VRML.

The researchers surveyed 539 middle school students in Seoul, South Korea(2005) to investigate the influence of the domestic violence experiences and internet addiction on aggressiveness in adolescents. The major findings were as follows : 1) the experiences of domestic violence as a victim or a bystander had a positive relationship with aggressiveness in adolescents, 2) both domestic violence experiences and internet addiction reinforced aggressiveness in adolescents, but the influence of the latter was stronger than that of the former, 3) The degrees of domestic violences and internet addiction in Korean adolescents far surpassed the world average. Therefore, this study proved the urgent need for the prevention and cure programs for Korean adolescents regarding domestic violence and internet addiction.

Container terminal productivity is a critical factor for both the terminal operator and liner companies. For the former it is a determinant factor of the competitiveness and profit of terminal, and for the later it is one that determines ships' tern round time and hence ships' operation costs. The concept and measures of productivity are however not well defined and unified throughout terminals in the world. This paper therefore deals with the empirical study on the evaluation of container terminal productivity. It first clarifies the concept of terminal productivity, and secondly based on the actual data on container terminals in and outside Korea, productivity is evaluated and compared. Finally, problems hampered efficient operation of Korean terminals are derived, and several comments are suggested for solving them.

Ovigerous crab of Sphaerozius nitidus of the family Menippidae was collected from Geojedo, Gyeongsangnamdo and hatched in the laboratory. Digital imaging of live zoeas of the first zoea stage of S. nitidus has been reported for the first time in the world, and its morphology has been redescribed and illustrated. This study is different from former study in that it has three unequal setae with exopod of antenna, 5+4 setae with basial endite of maxilla, and dorsomedial spine and lateral minute spine with fork of telson. The first zoea of S. nitidus has black pigments occurring behind the eyes, on the dorsal spine medially and on the basis of lateral carapace spines, on basal of basis of maxillipeds 1, 2, and posterior margins of somites 1-5, and yellowish green chromatophores on the dorsal spine.

This paper presents a multi-modal neural network composed of a preprocessing module and a multi-layer neural network module in order to enhance the nonlinear characteristics of neural network. The former module is based on spectral method using Chebyschev polynomials and transforms input data into spectra. The latter module identifies the system using the spectra generated by the preprocessing module. The omnibus numerical experiments show that the method is applicable to many a nonlinear dynamic system in the real world, and that preprocessing using Chebyschev polynomials reduces the number of neurons required for the multi-layer neural network.

With rapid development of world economics, electricity demand in metropolitan area has been increased dramatically. HTS(High Temperature Superconducting) cable is one of most promising technology to solve the bottleneck of electric network. However, HTS cable is not considered as matured technology yet to power system planners because of its different characteristics with conventional metal conductors. This paper suggests the comparison results of HTS cable simulation and experiment on steady state operation, also give the simulation results on transient characteristics of HTS cable components. This results could devote not only to discuss the security of HTS cable operation, but also to design power system oriented HTS cable.
