A Study on Relationships among University Students' Self-differentiation, Self-esteem and Mental Health : Focused on Depression and Anxiety (대학생의 자아분화, 자아존중감과 정신건강간의 관계 - 우울, 불안을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine relationships among university students' self-differentiation, self-esteem and mental health. The subjects were 400 students of four universities in Busan and Gyungnam area. A questionnaire survey was done. The results of this study are as follows : First, the levels of university students' self-differentiation and self-esteem were high. Second, university students' self-differentiation and self-esteem were correlated positively. Third, the levels of university students' depression and anxiety were relatively low. It showed that the subjects' mental health of this study were not bad. Fourth, depression had no significant difference by gender. However, female students had higher anxiety than male students had. Fifth, university students' self-differentiation and self-esteem had negative correlation with depression and anxiety, and self-esteem played a role of mediating variable between self-differentiation and mental health. Sixth, family projection, family regression and self integration of self-differentiation had indirect influence upon the students' mental health through self-esteem, while cognitive-emotional function had direct influence upon mental health and had indirect influence upon mental health through self-esteem as well. In this study, university students' self-differentiation and self-esteem were found to be important variables having influence upon mental health, and self-differentiation had indirect influence upon mental health through self-esteem. Counselling intervention strategies should be established considering self-differentiation and self-esteem of the students who complained about their maladjusted emotion and human relation problems at schools. Also, programs enhancing self-differentiation and self-esteem of university students should be developed and the execution of these programs will be needed to help the university students who experienced mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and so on.

The Effects of Ego Integrity on Death Anxiety of the Elderly: Focusing on the Mediating Effect of Depression (노인의 자아통합감이 죽음불안에 미치는 영향 : 우울의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the influence of ego integrity on death anxiety of the elderly, mediated by depression based on Erikson theory(1963). For this study, 313 elderly over 60 years old in Daegu city participated in a survey. The data of the survey was analyzed using SPSS 15.0 and Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) with AMOS 7.0. The results of the study are as follows: ego integrity of the elderly does not influence death anxiety due to the suppressing effect of depression. However, depression does mediate the relation between ego integrity and death anxiety fully. Such findings suggest that the Erikson theory can also be applied to elderly Korean citizens. A practical benefit derived from the study's results is the proposition to implement a reminiscence program, reinforce depression treatment and prevention systems, and augment a death awareness movement for elderly.

The Influence of Peer Victimization on Children's Loneliness and Anxiety (또래괴롭힘이 아동의 외로움과 불안에 미치는 영향 -초등학생과 중학생을 대상으로-)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of peer victimization on children's loneliness and anxiety. The 937 subjects were selected from the fourth, fifth, and sixth graders of elementary schools and the first and second graders of middle schools. The main findings of this study were as follows : 1) Boys were more focused on overt victimization than girls. Girls received more prosocial behavior than boys. There was no significant gender difference in relational victimization. 2) As the grade were higher, the tendency of relational and overt victimization had been decreased. As the grade higher, the tendency of prosocial behavior was no significant difference. 3) The influence of peer victimization on children's loneliness had difference among subtypes of peer victimization. 4) The influence of peer victimization on children anxiety had difference among subtypes of peer victimization.

  • The purposes of this study were to examine the influence of competitive state anxiety on outcome of games, therefore furnish practical information on sports coach. The Subjects of this study were sampled 200 bowling athletes using the stratified cluster random sampling. The data collected questionnaire designed for this study were consisted of Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2: CSAI-2 of Martens(1990). Statistics employed in this study to data analysis was regression analysis. Based on the result of the study, the following conclusions appear warranted: 1. Competitive state anxiety of bowling athletes were influence on result ranking. 2. Competitive state anxiety of bowling athletes were influence on average score.

  • Backgoround: This study aimed to examine the influence of anxiety sensitivity on task performance and physiological stress response, and to assess the effect of depression in this process for the youth population. Methods: We presented participants with an uncontrollable stress situation where they were required to perform mental arithmetic, based on the Montreal Imaging Stress Task (MIST). A total of 29 participants volunteered for this study. They completed the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-Revised and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 to measure their levels of anxiety sensitivity and depression. Two saliva samples, one before and one after the experiment, were collected to assess the change in cortisol levels as an index of physiological stress response. Results: Participants with high anxiety sensitivity showed lower performance on the mental arithmetic tasks and a significant increase in a salivary cortisol level, compared to those with low anxiety sensitivity. Furthermore, cortisol levels showed a remarkable increase where high anxiety sensitivity was coupled with depressed mood. In other hands, the levels of cortisol remained unchanged despite high anxiety sensitivity with low depressed mood. Conclusions: Our results confirm that the interaction between anxiety sensitivity and depression affects participants' task performance and stress response, as measured through behavioral tasks and physiological data with self-report indices. Also, through the physiological data, we examined that those who have a high level of anxiety sensitivity showed maladaptive responses under high stressful situation.

  • By the influence of the descriptive approach of DSM-III, the anxiety became the same thing as the anxiety disorder to the clinicians. This unfortunate result sacrificed psychodynamic model of symptom formations and simplified the anxiety as one of the disease entity not as the overdetermined symptoms. These phenomenon awakened the psychoanalytic interest which was in sleep. Freud was the first major articulator of the basic significance of anxiety in human behavior. He attributed the particular quality of the anxiety experience to the trauma of birth, and subsequently to the fear of castration. Such classification of the anxiety according to the psychosexual development is helpful for the clinicians in understanding the origin of anxiety which the patient shows during the psychotherapy. The other analytical view of interpersonal psychoanalysis came from Sullivan. A large part of his therapy is taken up with recognizing and correcting parataxic distortions that interfere with realistic self-appraisal of events and of oneself in relation to others. Perhaps no explanation is the 'most basic' explanation for human anxiety. Anxiety is a multifaceted entity consisting of aspects of realm of discourse. Existential anxiety is inescapable in Western culture but it can be transcended by the cultivation of mind in Eastern culture. The analysts need to stay attuned to their own propensities for anxiety and must permit their own experiences with anxiety to be the grist for the psychotherapeutic mill.

Impact of Self-Esteem and Test Anxiety on Mental Health in students of Dental Hygienics (일부 치위생과 학생의 시험불안, 자아존중감과 정신건강과의 관계)

  • This study is a descriptive paper addressing the relationship between test anxiety, self-esteem and the mental health levels of freshmen and third year students of Dental Hygienics. In late 2011, we received a total of 298 questionnaires from freshmen and third year Dental Hygienics students of three South Korean universities, located specifically in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The timing of this questionnaire was significant because it was one week prior to midterm examinations. The results were as follows:1. There was a statistically significant relationship between age (t=3.017, p<.001) and grade(t=2.665, p<0.05), subjective health status(t=27.513, p<.001). 2. The lower the participants' reported mental health in general, the higher their level of test anxiety (r=.565, p<.001), broken down into two subdivisions: cognitive text anxiety (r=526, p<.001) and emotional test anxiety (r=.534, p<.001). 3. When considering the factors that influence the general mental health of participants, there were age differences. For first year students, their subjeetive health status (${\ss}$=-.300, p<.001) and test anxiety (${\ss}$=.530, p<.001) were significant. For third year students, this was also true (subjective mental condition: ${\ss}$=-.242, p<.001 and test anxiety: ${\ss}$=.350, p<.001) but self-worth was also significant (${\ss}$=.377, p<.001). The results of this study suggest that the key factors that influence the mental health level of students Dental Hygienics are test anxiety, subjective appraisal of health level, and general self-worth. A systematic approach is therefore needed to improve students' mental health and reduce test anxiety. Health management programs which address and test students' physical health will also be important in improving student performance and welfare.

The Influence of Career Identity, Job-seeking Stress, Self Control on Test Anxiety in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 진로정체감, 취업스트레스, 자기통제력이 시험불안에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: This study examined the relationships among career identity, job-seeking stress, self control, and test anxiety in nursing students. Methods: Data were collected through self reported structured questionnaire form nursing students using convenient sampling methods form November 15 to December 10, 2015. The data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 19.0 using ANOVA, t-test, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Factors that had an influence on test anxiety included job-seeking stress(${\beta}=0.40$ p<0.001), career identity(${\beta}=-0.17$, p=0.010), fourth grade(${\beta}=-0.14$, p=0.020). These factors together explained 25% of the test anxiety in nursing students(F=25.48, p<0.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that job-seeking stress management strategies and academic career identity enhancement programs should be developed to reduce test anxiety in nursing student and that further study should be done on the effects of such programs.

Influence of Comorbid Mental Disorder on Time to Seeking Treatment in Anxiety Disorder : Comparison of Social Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder (불안장애의 치료추구시간에 대한 공존 정신질환의 영향 : 사회불안장애와 공황장애 간 비교)

  • Objective : Individuals with anxiety disorders experience a wide range of time to seeking treatment (TST) as well as various comorbid mental disorders. The present study examined the TST in social anxiety disorder (SAD) and panic disorder. This study aimed to find out the influence of comorbid mental disorder on TST of anxiety disorder through the comparison of SAD and panic disorder. Methods : This study included 311 SAD and 378 panic disorder patients at the initial visit of psychiatric clinic. Contribution of clinical (number of comorbidity, comorbid type and onset age) and demographic (current age) factors to TST were investigated by multivariate analysis. Results : The median length of TST was 14.03 years in SAD and 2.26 years in panic disorder. In social anxiety disorder, fewer comorbidity, younger onset age, and older age were factors associated with delayed TST. In panic disorder, only younger onset age was associated with delayed TST. In both disorders, comorbid depressive disorder was associated with shorter TST. Conclusion : Our data provided the differences in illness behavior needing help based on comorbid mental disorders between SAD and panic disorder. In addition to comorbid disorder, factors affecting TST of anxiety disorder requires future investigation.

An Empirical Study on the Influence of Hypersensitiveness in Accident Reports and Usefulness on Receptiveness of Atomic Power Generation

  • The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of hypersensitiveness in accident reports and usefulness on admission of atomic power generation. By the result of study we can look forward to understanding obstacles and promotion factors in constructing atomic power plants. The results of hypothesis testing can be summarized as follows: First, the hypothesis that hypersensitiveness in accident reports has a plus effect on reliability is accepted. Secondly, the hypothesis that hypersensitiveness in accident reports has a plus effect on anxiety is accepted. Thirdly, the hypothesis that reliability has a plus effect on anxiety is accepted. Fourthly, the hypothesis that reliability has a minus effect on receptiveness is accepted. Fifthly, the hypothesis that anxiety has a minus effect on receptiveness is accepted. Sixthly, the hypothesis that usefulness has a minus effect on necessity is accepted. Seventhly, the hypothesis that usefulness has a plus effect on receptiveness is rejected. Eighthly, the hypothesis that necessity has a minus effect on receptiveness is accepted.
