  • This paper proposes texture descriptor for texture classification called Local Neighbor Differences (LND). LND is a high discriminating texture descriptor and also robust to illumination changes. The proposed descriptor utilizes the sign of differences between surrounding pixels in a local neighborhood. The differences of those pixels are thresholded to form an 8-bit binary codeword. The decimal values of these 8-bit code words are computed and they are called LND values. A histogram of the resulting LND values is created and used as feature to describe the texture information of an image. Experimental results, with respect to texture classification accuracies using OUTEX_TC_00001 test suite has been performed. The results show that LND outperforms LBP method, with average classification accuracies of 92.3% whereas that of local binary patterns (LBP) is 90.7%.

  • In this paper, a new texture feature extraction method for texture image classification is proposed. The proposed method is a modified texture spectrum method. It uses local weighting averaged texture unit, that is, the neighbor pixels are weithted and averaged in 4-direction and the calculated values are compared with center pixel to find texture units. The proposed method has only 81 texture units and these units are really good features for texture classification. The proposed method is applied to vegetable images and Blodatz album images and compared with several conventional methods for the feature extraction time and the recognition rate.

  • One of the most important procedure in stereo DEM generation is the stereo matching process which finds the conjugate pixels in a pair of stereo imagery. In order to be found as conjugate pixels, the pixels should have distinct spatial feature to be distinguished from other pixels. However, in the homogeneous areas such as water covered or forest canopied areas, it is very difficult to find the conjugate pixels due to the lack of distinct spatial feature. Most of erroneous elevation values in the stereo DEM are produced in those homogeneous areas. This paper presents a simple method for improving the quality of stereo DEM utilizing the texture filters. An entropy filter was applied to one of the input stereo imagery to extract very homogeneous areas before stereo matching process. Those extracted homogeneous areas were excluded from being candidates for stereo matching process. Also a statistical texture filter was applied to the generated elevation values before the interpolation process was applied in odor to remove the remaining anomalous elevation values. Stereo pair of SPOT level 1B panchromatic imagery were used for the experiments. The results showed that by utilizing the texture filters as a pre and a post processor of stereo matching process, the quality of the stereo DEM could be dramatically improved.

  • In this paper, we propose a new approach for rotation invariant texture classification based on Gabor wavelet. Conventional methods have the low correct classification rate in large texture database. In our proposed method, we define two feature groups which are the global feature vector and the local feature matrix. The feature groups are output of Gabor wavelet filtering. By using the feature groups, we defined an improved discriminant and obtained high classification rates of large texture database in the experiments. From spectrum symmetry of texture images, the number of test times were reduced nearly 50%. Consequently, the correct classification rate is improved with $2.3%{\sim}15.6%$ values in 112 Brodatz texture class, which may vary according to comparison methods.

  • Texture is one of the most useful features in classifying and segmenting images. The LBP-based approach previously presented in the literature has been successful in many applications. However, it's theoretical foundation is based only on the difference of pixel values, and consequently it has a number of drawbacks like it performs poorly for the images corrupted with noise, and especially it cannot be used as a multiscale texture descriptor due to the exploding increase of feature vector dimension with increase of the number of neighbor pixels. In this paper, we present a method to address these drawbacks of LBP-based approach. More specifically, our approach quantizes the range of pixels values and construct a 3D histogram which captures the correlative information of pixels. This histogram is used as a texture feature. Several tests with texture images show that the proposed method outperforms the LBP-based approach in the problem of texture classification.

  • Texture information plays an important role in object recognition and classification. To perform an accurate classification, the texture feature used in the classification must be highly discriminative. This paper presents a novel texture descriptor for texture-based image retrieval and its application in Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system for Emphysema classification. The texture descriptor is based on the combination of local surrounding neighborhood difference and centralized neighborhood difference and is named as Combined Neighborhood Difference (CND). The local differences of surrounding neighborhood difference and centralized neighborhood difference between pixels are compared and converted into binary codewords. Then binomial factor is assigned to the codewords in order to convert them into high discriminative unique values. The distribution of these unique values is computed and used as the texture feature vectors. The texture classification accuracies using Outex and Brodatz dataset show that CND achieves an average of 92.5%, whereas LBP, LND and Gabor filter achieve 89.3%, 90.7% and 83.6%, respectively. The implementations of CND in the computer-aided diagnosis of Emphysema is also presented in this paper.

  • In this study, based on the analysis of texture feature values of statistical properties. And we examined the normal and the applicability of the computer-aided diagnosis of cerebral infarction in the brain computed tomography images. The experiment was analyzed to evaluate the ROC curve recognition rate of disease using six parameters representing the feature values of the texture. As a result, it showed average mean 88%, variance 92%, relative smoothness 94%, uniformity of 88%, a high disease recognition rate of entropy 84%. However, it showed a slightly lower disease recognition rate and 58% for skewness. In the analysis using ROC curve, the area under the curve for each parameter indicates 0.886 (p = 0.0001) or more, resulted in a meaningful recognition of the disease. Further, to determine the cut-off values for each parameter are determined to be the prediction of disease through the computer-aided diagnosis.

  • Prostate cancer is a high-risk with a high incidence and is a disease that occurs only in men. Accurate diagnosis of cancer is necessary as the incidence of cancer patients is increasing. Prostate cancer is also a disease that is difficult to predict progress, so it is necessary to predict in advance through prognosis. Therefore, in this paper, grade classification is attempted based on texture feature extraction. There are two main methods of classification: Uses One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to determine whether texture features are significant values, compares them with all texture features and then uses only one classification i.e. Benign versus. The second method consisted of more detailed classifications without using ANOVA for better analysis between different grades. Results of both these methods are compared and analyzed through the machine learning models such as Support Vector Machine and K-Nearest Neighbor. The accuracy of Benign versus Grade 4&5 using the second method with the best results was 90.0 percentage.

  • To find the best way to distinguish sand dunes from urban building and rural patches, textural analysis has been performed in Kimnyeong sand dune, Jeju. An aerial photo was re-sampled into one-meter. Homomorphic filters were applied to the original sub-scene and then high-pass filtered one. The entropy filtered one proves to be the best extraction method after high pass filtered-homomorphic filters in urban areas. The spectral values of sand dune area were similar to open land in rural area. In contrast, the texture values of sand dune area are more homogeneous than those of open land in rural area.

  • In this paper, a new method of feature extraction of major objects to represent an image using Vector Quantization(VQ) is proposed. The principal features of the image, which are used in a content-based image retrieval system, are color, texture, shape and spatial positions of objects. The representative color and texture features are extracted from the given image using VQ(Vector Quantization) clustering algorithm with a general feature extraction method of color and texture. Since these are used for content-based image retrieval and searched by objects, it is possible to search and retrieve some desirable images regardless of the position, rotation and size of objects. The experimental results show that the representative feature extraction time is much reduced by using VQ, and the highest retrieval rate is given as the weighted values of color and texture are set to 0.5 and 0.5, respectively, and the proposed method provides up to 90% precision and recall rate for 'person'query images.
