In this study, a large-scale direct shear test was performed to evaluate the shear characteristics of the pile-soil interface according to the fines content and confining pressure conditions as a reasonable evaluation method of the pullout resistance performance of pile considering the soil conditions. It was found that the shear stress was greatly generated under the conditions of high normal stress and low fines content. In addition, the maximum shear stress was found to be rather large under the conditions of the same normal stress and fines content, when pile surface had high roughness. The internal friction angle decreased at the pile-soil interface, when the fines content in the ground increased. On the other hand, the cohesion decreased under the condition of high fines content. And the internal friction angle and cohesion were large regardless of the fines content in the model ground, when the roughness of the pile surface was high.
Concrete filled steel tube (PCFT) piles, which compose PHC piles inside thin steel pipes, were developed to increase the flexural strength of the pile with respect to the horizontal load. In order to compare the flexural strength of PCFT pile with that of steel pipe pile, several flexural tests were performed on the PCFT and steel pipe piles with the same diameter and the P-M curves for both piles were constructed by the limit state design method. Four test piles were also installed and lateral pile load tests were performed to compare the lateral load capacities and lateral behaviors of the hybrid composite piles using PCFT piles and the existing piles such as HCP and steel pipe piles. The flexural test results showed that the flexural strength of PCFT piles was 18.7% higher than that of steel pipe piles with thickness of 12mm and the same diameter, and the mid-span deflection of piles was 50% lower than that of steel pipe piles at the same bending moment. From the P-M curves, it can be seen that the flexural strength of PCFT piles subjected to the vertical load is greater than that of steel pipe piles, but the flexural strength of PCFT piles subjected to the pullout load is lower than that of steel pipe piles. In addition, field pile load tests showed that the PCFT hybrid composite pile has 60.5% greater lateral load capacity than the HCP and 35.8% greater lateral load capacity than the steel pipe pile when the length of the upper pile in hybrid composite piles was the same.
Instead of a single pile, group piles are usually used for the pile foundation. If the earthquake occurs in the ground where group piles are installed, dynamic behavior of group piles are affected not only by interaction of piles and the ground movement but also by the pile cap. However, in Korea, the pile cap influence is not taken account into the design of group piles. Research on dynamic behavior of group piles has been performed only to verify interaction of piles and the ground and has not considered the pile cap as a factor. In this research, 1g shaking table model tests were performed to verify the thickness of the pile cap affects dynamic behavior of group piles that were installed in the ground where the earthquake would occur. The test results show that, as thickness of the pile cap increased, acceleration and horizontal displacement of the pile cap decreasd while vertical displacement of the pile cap increased. The results also showed that, among the group files tested, acceleration, horizontal displacement, and vertical displacement of the bearing pile are smaller than those of the friction pile.

Liquefaction-induced lateral spreading has been the most extensive damage to pile foundations during earthquakes. However, a case of pile failure was reported despite the fact that a large margin of safety factor was employed in their design. This means that the current seismic design method of pile is not agreeable with the actual failure mechanism of pile. Newly proposed failure mechanism of pile is a pile failure based on buckling instability. In this study, failure behavior of pile embedded in liquefied soil deposits was analyzed considering lateral spreading and buckling instability performing 1g shaking table test. As a result, it can be concluded that the pile subjected to excessive axial loads ($near\;P_{cr}$) can fail by buckling instability during liquefaction. When lateral spreading took place in sloping grounds, lateral spreading increased lateral deflection of pile and reduced the buckling load, promoting more rapid collapse. In addition, buckling shape of pile was observed. In the ease of pile buckling, hinge formed at the middle of the pile, not at the bottom. And in sloping grounds, location of hinge got loiter compared with level ground because of the effects of lateral spreading.

In this study, the model tests were conducted on the short piles installed in sands under a horizontal pullout load to investigate their behavior characteristics. From the horizontal loading tests where dimensions of the pile diameter and length, and loading point were varied, the horizontal pullout resistance and the rotational and translational movement pattern of the pile were investigated. As a result, the horizontal pullout resistance of the pile embedded in sands was dependent on the pile length, diameter, loading point, etc. The ultimate horizontal pullout load tended to increase as the loading point (h/L) moved to the bottom from the top of the pile, regardless of the ratio between the pile length and diameter (L/D), reached the maximum value at the point of h/L = 0.75, and decreased afterwards. When the horizontal pullout load acted on the upper part above the middle of the pile, the pile rotated clockwise and moved to the pullout direction, and the pivot point of the pile was located at 150-360mm depth below the ground surface. On the other hand, when the horizontal pullout load acted on the lower part of the pile, the pile rotated counterclockwise and travelled horizontally, and the rotational angle was very small.
In this paper, a case of a high-rise building supported by a large-diameter drilled shaft socketed in a weathered ground has been studied. The design case of pile foundation presented in this paper could be a representative example of execution of pile design through three(3) design stages of "preliminary design-proof test-supplementary design". As proof test, two(2) BDH PLT (Bi-directional High Pressure Pile Load Test) were performed at the early construction stage. By following the design process of this way, the economic pile design could be carried out and a large amount of construction cost saving could be realized.

This paper presents experimental results of a series of 1-g shaking table model tests performed on end-bearing single piles and pile groups to investigate the effect of particle size on the dynamic behavior of soil-pile systems. Two soil-pile models consisting of a single-pile and a $4{\times}2$-pile group were tested twice; first using Jumoonjin sand, and second using Australian Fine sand, which has a smaller particle size. In the case of single-pile models, the lateral displacement was almost within 1% of pile diameter which corresponds to the elastic range of the pile. The back-calculated p-y curves show that the subgrade reaction of the Jumoonjin-sand-model ground was larger than that of the Australian Fine-sand-model ground at the same displacement. This phenomenon means that the stress-strain behavior of Jumoonjin sand was initially stiffer than that of Australian Fine sand. This difference was also confirmed by resonant column tests and compression triaxial tests. And the single pile p-y backbone curves of the Australian fine sand were constructed and compared with those of the Jumoonjin sand. As a result, the stiffness of the p-y backbone curves of Jumunjin sand was larger than those of Australian fine sand. Therefore, using the same p-y curves regardless of particle size can lead to inaccurate results when evaluating dynamic behavior of soil-pile system. In the case of the group-pile models, the lateral displacement was much larger than the elastic range of pile movement at the same test conditions in the single-pile models. The back-calculated p-y curves in the case of group pile models were very similar in both sands because the stiffness difference between the Jumoonjin-sand-model ground and the Australian Fine-sand-model ground was not significantly large at a large strain level, where both sands showed non-linear behavior. According to a series of single pile and group pile test results, the evaluation group pile effect using the p-multiplier can lead to inaccurate results on dynamic behavior of soil-pile system.

Due to the economic growth and development of construction technology, a role of foundation to resist heavy loads has been increased. In this present study to improve the structural performance of reinforced concrete pile, the precast HPC pile reinforced with rebar and filling concrete was developed and the strength of pile was predicted based on the limit state design method. The safety of HPC pile strength was evaluated by comparing with the design values. The geometry of HPC pile is a decagon cross section with a maximum width of 500 mm and a minimum width of 475 mm, and the hollow head of pile thickness is 70 mm. The inner area of the hollow head part was made as the square ribbed shape presented in the limit state design code in order to achieve horizontal shear strength between pile concrete and filling concrete. From the shear test results, it was found that the stable shear strength were secured without abrupt failure until maximum load stage despite the shear cracks was found. Shear strength is 135% and 119% higher than that of design value calculated from limit state design code. The driving test results of HPC pile according to the presence of additional reinforcement showed the outstanding crack resistance against impact loads condition. From the bending test results the flexural load between PHC pile and HPC pile was 1.51 times and 1.48 times higher than that of the design flexural load of conventional PHC pile.
This paper conducts a complicated coupled effective stress analysis of X-section-in-place concrete (XCC) pile installation and consolidation processes using the dual-stage Eulerian-Lagrangian (DSEL) technique incorporating the modified Cam-clay model. The numerical model is verified by centrifuge data and field test results. The main objective of this study is to investigate the shape effect of XCC pile cross-section on radial total stress, excess pore pressure and time-dependent strength. The discrepancies of the penetration mechanism and set-up effects on pile shaft resistance between the XCC pile and circular pile are discussed. Particular attention is placed on the time-dependent strength around the XCC pile shaft. The results show that soil strength improved more significantly close to the flat side compared with the concave side. Additionally, the computed ultimate shaft resistance of XCC pile incorporating set-up effects is 1.45 times that of the circular pile. The present findings are likely helpful in facilitating the incorporation of set-up effects into XCC pile design practices.
When pile foundation is constructed by dynamic method, it is desirable to perform monitoring of drivability with pile penetration. Dynamic pile monitoring yields information regarding driving hammer, cushion, pile and soil behaviour that can be used to confirm the assumptions of wave equation analysis. In this study, dynamic monitoring of the steel pipe pile was performed with Pile Driving Analyser (PDA). The PDA utilizes the wave propagation theory to compute numerous variables which describe the conditions of the hammer-pile-soil system in real-time and following each hammer impact. This approach allows immediate field verification of hammer performance, driving efficiency, and estimation of pile bearing capacity. A series of PDA test were performed at the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) located in southeast of Marado, a southernmost small island south of Jeju Island. The drilling core sediments of Ieodo subsoil are composed of mud and sand, showing lamination and wavy or lenticular bedding, which were often bioturbated. This paper summarizes the results of PDA tests which were applied in measurement and estimation of large diameter open ended steel pipe pile driven by steam hammer, Vulcan-560 and MRBS-4600, at the marine sediments.
