  • The purpose of the present paper is to offer an analysis of LiDAR data processing and three dimensional terrain for Geographic Information System (CIS) applications. Generally, LiDAR survey is the method which obtains quantitative and qualitative information of the terrain using airborne laser scanning (ALS). We will get a most topographic data at a Triangular Irregular Network (TIN), Digital Surface Model (DSM) and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) using LiDAR data. We examined many factors such as visibility, hillshade, aspect and slope using DEM and DSM. The analyzing results obtained from each item are thought to be regarded as leading factors in the terrain analysis. It is to be hoped that LiDAR survey will contribute a new approach to the terrain analysis.

  • In this paper we introduce a fast simplification algorithm for terrain height fields to produce a triangulated irregular network, based on the greedy insertion algorithm in [1,4,5]. Our algorithm partitions a terrain height data into rectangular blocks with the same size ad simplifies blocks one by one with the greedy insertion algorithm. Our algorithm references only to the points and the triangles withing each current block for adding a point into the triangulation. Therefore, the algorithm runs faster than the greedy insertion algorithm, which references all input points and triangles in the terrain. Our experiment shows that partitioning method runs from 4 to more than 20 times faster, and it approximates test height fields as accurately as the greedy insertion algorithms. Most greedy insertion algorithms suffer from elongated triangles that usually appear near the boundaries. However, we insert the four corner points into each block to produce the base triangulation of the block before the point addition step begins so that elongated triangles could not appear in th simplified terrain.

  • Researches in the field of Computer Graphics and Geographical Information Systems(GIS) have extensively studied the method of photo-realistic landscape modelling, because it have become a commom requirement in applications such as flight simulators, mission rehearsal, and construction planning. A common approach to the display of terrain uses a Digital Elevation Model(DEM). DEM is an evenly spaced array of the terrain elevation data and can be obtained from stereo satellite data. With the DEM data, the process of 3D terrain modelling consists of three steps. The first step is to extract the meaningful data (such as peak, pit, passes...) from DEM data based on LOD(Level Of Detail) criteria. The second is to construct the 3D surface by TIN, which represents a surface as a set of non-overlapping continuous triangular facets of irregular size and shape. The third is a rendering of 3D terrain model. The goal of this research is a construction of 3D terrain with TIN. To do this, we are going to app]y Radial Sweep Algorithm. Radial Sweep Algorithm for generating TIN works quickly and efficiently. However, it does not solve the problem caused by the approximated nature of triangulated surface. To solve this problem, this research derive improved radial sweep algorithms with the optimal triangle definition.

  • For effective mobility control of unmanned ground vehicles in outdoor off-road environments, terrain cover classification technology using passive sensors is vital. This paper presents a novel method far terrain classification based on color and texture information of off-road images. It uses a neural network classifier and wavelet features. We exploit the wavelet mean and energy features extracted from multi-channel wavelet transformed images and also utilize the terrain class spatial coordinates of images to include additional features. By comparing the classification performance according to applied features, the experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has a promising result and potential possibilities for autonomous navigation.

  • In this paper, A model of 4-legged walking robot is presented by investigating the gait of animals, which can walk with maintaining static stability on irregular terrain. Kinematices of the model robot was analyzed by geometric approach, and a gait control algorithm is proposed for the effective walking on irregular terrain. Terrains are classified into 4 types in order to study the terrain adaptability of the proposed algorithm and it is simulated for each type of terrain.

  • Based on current practical needs for geo-spatial information on mobile platform, the main theme of this study is a design and implementation of dynamic 3D terrain rendering system using spaceborne imagery, as a kind of texture image for photo-realistic 3D scene generation on mobile environment. Image processing and 3D graphic techniques and algorithms, such as TIN-based vertex generation with regular spacing elevation data for generating 3D terrain surface, image tiling and image-vertex texturing in order to resolve limited resource of mobile devices, were applied and implemented by using graphic pipeline of OpenGL|ES (Embedded System) API. Through this implementation and its tested results with actual data sets of DEM and satellite imagery, we demonstrated the realizable possibility and adaptation of complex typed and large sized 3D geo-spatial information in mobile devices. This prototype system can be used to mobile 3D applications with DEM and satellite imagery in near future.

  • Small-scale environmental impact assessments have limitations in terms of survey duration and evaluation resources, which can hinder the assessment and analysis of the current situation. In this study, we propose the use of drone technology during the environmental impact assessment process to supplement these limitations in the current situation analysis. Drone photography can provide rapid and accurate high-resolution images, allowing for the collection of various information about the target area. This information can include different types of data such as terrain, vegetation, landscape, and real-time 3D spatial information, which can be collected and processed using GIS software to understand and analyze the environmental conditions. In this study, we confirmed that terrain and vegetation analysis and prediction of the target area using drone photography and GIS analysis software is possible, providing useful information for environmental impact assessments.

  • RFM is believed to be universally applicable to any type of the sensor. Most of researches carried out lately are concentrated on terrain-independent method, but the researches about approvement of accuracy by way of terrain-dependent method are required to increase a practical use of satellite imagery in nonprofessional groups. This research focused on a means to improve RFM solution, a matching technique, and a generation of DEM through a correlation analysis, with terrain-dependent solution. The result shows that accuracy problem which is caused by over-parameterization on RFCs was removed through correlation analysis, and it was possible to generate a accurate DEM with terrain-dependent solution. And also, the application of RFM with different satellite images show sensor independent characteristics of RFM

  • In recent researches, several LOD techniques are used for real-time visualization of large sized terrain data. However, during mesh simplification, geometry popping may occur in consecutive frames, because of the geometric error. We propose an efficient method for reducing the geometry popping using roughness map and bias map. A roughness map and a bias map are used to move vertices of the terrain mesh to appropriate position where they minimize the geometry errors. A roughness map and a bias map are represented as a texture suitable for GPU processing. Moving vertices using bias map is processed on the GPU, so the high-speed visualization can be possible.

  • In this thesis, we propose the 3D terrain modelling method for the better understanding of the geographic information. The process of 3D terrain medelling consists of three steps. The first step is to obtain real-world data from satellite images and stored in the form of DEM(Digital Elevation Model). The second one is to extract the meaningful data from DEM data based on LOD(Level Of Detail). And the third is to construct the 3D surface by TIN(Triangulated Irregular Network) with the extracted meaingful data. The proposed dynamic TIN reconstruction algorithm locally reconstruct the existed TIN model with the additional a new point. In this way, we can construct the TIN with the reduced time and can simulated 3D terrain model in real time.
