A new species, Pseudostellaria baekdusanensis M. Kim (Caryophyllaceae), has been named and described from Mt. Baekdu of the Korean peninsula. Pseudostellaria baekdusanensis shares several characteristics (same size leaves, axillary or terminal flowers, emaginate petals, etc.) with its related species P. japonica (Korshinsky) Pax. It is, however, distinct from P. japonica which have large plant (25-35 cm), leaf blade margins and midveins with long hairs, shallow emaginate petal apex, (2) 3 styles, and cleistogamic flowers by having small plants (9-13 cm), leaf blade basal margins with long hairs, deep emaginate petal apex, 2 styles, and non-cleistogamic flowers.

Flowers of Magnolia denudata has been reported to possess a variety of pharmacological activities. In this study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects and mechanism of the water extract of Flowers of Magnolia denudata(MD) in lipopolysacchride (LPS)-mediated inflammatory mediators in murine peritoneal macrophages. MD itself does not have any toxic effects in murine peritoneal macrophages. MD inhibits LPS-induced nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor $(TNF)-{\alpha}$, IL-6 and IL-12 production in murine peritoneal macrophages. Furthermore, we have found that MD inhibited LPS-induced $NF-{\kappa}B$ but not c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), p38 and extracellular signal-ragulated kinase (ERK) activation. These results suggested that MD inhibit LPS-induced production of $TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-6 and IL-12 via suppression of the $NF-{\kappa}B$ activation.
Soybean, azuki-bean and mungbean were cultivated at different growing conditions, May 10, June 9, July 9 seeding, and May 10 seeding-short day treatment, to investigate the distribution of flowering date and the variation of pod/flower ratio. The growth habit type of the soybean variety used was determinate, but the azuki-bean and mungbean varieties used showed indeterminate growth habit. The pod/flower ratio ranged 38 to 48% for soybean, 23 to 34% for azuki-bean and 46 to 60% for mungbean along with growing conditions. Flower abscission for soybean and mungbean, and pod abscission for azuki-bean affected more on the number of matured pods. Soybean showed once full blooming period, but azuki-bean and mungbean showed two or three times full blooming period except July 9 seeding plot through the whole growing period. Flowers bloomed just after every full blooming period showed lower value of pod/flower ratio and higher pod/flower ratio was obtained from flowers bloomed before or far after full blooming at plots seeded May 10 and June 9 in three pulse crops. Most full blooming period of soybean coincided within 5 days near the terminal leaf appearance date, and number of flowers bloomed before terminal leaf expansion and matured pods from these flowers were major in every soybean plant at all growing codition plots. No relations were found between terminal leaf appearance and flowering or pod setting patterns of azuki-bean and mungbean.

A cDNA clone encoding chloroplast triosephosphate isomerase (TPI-cp) was isolated from strawberry fruit cDNA library. Sequence analyses indicated that the cDNA contains an open reading frame of 314 amino acids (33.5 kDa) composed of a transit peptide (59 amino acids) in amino terminal region and mature protein (255 amino acids). The existence of transit peptide in the deduced amino acid sequence implies that it encodes a chloroplast isoform. The protein sequence is more similar to other plant chloroplast isoforms than cytosolic isoforms. RNA blot analysis indicated that its expression is ubiquitous in examined five tissues, flowers, leaves, petioles, roots and fruits, and shows differential pattern according to fruit ripening. Genomic DNA blot analysis showed that TPI-cp is encoded by multiple genes in strawberry. Through sequence comparison and phylogenetic tree construction, TPI-cp is distinctively grouped into dicot and chloroplast isoforms.
The mating systems of natural populations of Potentilla freyniana in Korea were determined using allozyme analysis. The result suggests that P. freyniana is outcrossing as well as employing vegetative reproduction by stolon (self-fertilization rate, s < 0.5). The values of the inbreeding coefficient of eight populations in Korea varied from 0.244 to 0.331, with an average value of 0.274. For eight natural populations, multi-locus estimates of outcrossing (tm) was 0.603 across 13 polymorphic loci, with individual population values ranging from 0.530 to 0.652. The relatively low outcrossing rates of some populations could be attributed to extensive vegetative reproduction by stolon and the isolation of flowering mature plants. Although P. freyniana usually propagated by asexually-produced ramets, I could not rule out the possibility that sexual reproduction occurred at a low rate because each ramet may produce terminal flowers. Although heterozygote excess was observed in some natural populations, most populations exhibited varying degrees of inbreeding and a heterozygote deficit.
Eleocharis R. Br. (Cyperaceae) is characterized by unbranched culms, one terminal spikelet, bisexual flowers, and bristly perianths, occurring mainly in circumboreal marshes and wetlands. There are about 250 species worldwide, and 15 taxa in Korea have been recognized. Chromosomes in Cyperaceae are known to be holocentric, missing constricted centromeres during cell division. For the first time, we report the chromosome counts of Eleocharis from Korean populations of E. attenuata f. laeviseta (Nakai) H. Hara (2n = 20); E. parvula (Roem. & Schult.) Link ex Bluff, Nees & Schauer (2n = 10); E. ussuriensis Zinserl. (2n = 16); and E. valleculosa var. setosa Ohwi (2n = 16). The populations exhibit variations in their chromosome sizes from ca.1.7 ㎛ to ca. 6 ㎛, categorized as gradient and bimodal karyotypes. The karyotypes observed are congruent with previous phylogenetic groups proposed. To clarify the traditional and phylogenetic classification of Korean Eleocharis, further taxonomic and chromosomal investigations with additional taxon sampling efforts are required.
Two Unrecorded species from Jeju Province are reported: Maesa japonica of Maesaceae which is unrecorded family and Cardamine tanakae of Brassicaceae. Monotypic family Maesaceae, is distinguished from Myrsinaceae and Primulaceae by having pedicels with a pair of bracteoles, flowers without staminodia, semi-inferior ovary and indehiscent fruits with many seeds. M. japonica is readily distinguishable from M. salicifolia in China and M. montana var. formosana in Taiwan and Japan by shapes of blades, corolla and bracteoles, the presence/absence of serrulation of leaf margins, ratio of length of corolla tube and corolla lobes, feature and color of fruit surface. C. tanakae is most similar to Korean endemic C. glechomifolia in morphology, however, the two taxa are readily distinguishable by the number of leaflets of cauline leaves, size of terminal leaflets, number of flowers per inflorescence, the presence of whitish hairs on ovary and fruits.
The genus Pseudostellaria (Caryophyllaceae) in Korea was investigated in order to clarify the taxonomic positions and scientific names among the species in this genus based on morphological characteristics. P. ${\times}$ bohyeonsanensis and P. ${\times}$ seoraksanensis share several characteristics (trichome on the sepal margin and midvein, five petals, and stem reclining to the ground after flowering) with P. davidii. P. ${\times}$ bohyeonsanensis, resulting from natural hybridization of P. davidii and P. okamotoi var. longipedicellata, has sterile fruit and a long pedicel (2.2-6.0 cm). P. ${\times}$ seoraksanensis, a natural hybrid of P. davidii and P. palibiniana var. palibiniana, has sterile fruit and a short pedicel (1.1-1.8 cm). P. okamotoi var. longipedicellata shares several characteristics (long pedicels of chasmogamic flowers that elongate to the ground when bearing fruit and cleistogamic flowers with a long pedicel) with the related taxa P. okamotoi var. okamotoi. P. okamotoi var. longipedicellata has slender root tubers, glabrous pedicels, and 5-9 petals. P. palibiniana var. gageodoensis is described from Gageodo Island. It is similar to P. palibiniana var. palibiniana having chasmogamic flowers at the stem terminal, 5-7 petals, and a short pedicel, but P. palibiniana var. gageodoensis is distinguished by 1-2 rows of trichomes on the pedicel, a large sepal size, a large petal size, and a branched stem at its base. P. ${\times}$ biseulsanensis, from a natural hybrid of P. heterophylla and P. okamotoi var. longipedicellata, has a solitary aerial stem, a chasmogamic flower at the stem terminal, a shallow marginate or bitten petal apex, one row of trichomes on the pedicel, and sterile fruit. P. ${\times}$ segeolsanensis, from a natural hybrid of P. palibiniana var. palibiniana and P. okamotoi var. okamotoi, is described from Segeolsan Mt. It has numerous aerial stems, a chasmogamic flower at the stem terminal, 1-2 rows of trichomes on the pedicel, and fertile fruit. Consequently, the genus Pseudostellaria in Korea has been classified into eight species, four hybrids, two varieties, and five forms.
This study investigated the effects of flower and fruit thinning agents on fruit set and harvested fruit quality attributes in 'Gamhong' apples. Lime sulfur, MaxCel (1.9% BA), and Fruitone (3.5% NAA) were applied either at post-bloom or fruitlet stages to mature 'Gamhong/M.9' trees. In 2011, the numbers of fruits per cluster in terminal flowers were 1.74, 0.82, and 1.15 for the control, lime sulfur, and Maxcel (applied at 10-mm fruit stage) treatments, respectively. The percentages of single fruit per cluster were 36.0, 47.9, and 48.7% for the control, lime sulfur, and Maxcel (10 mm) treatments, respectively, while the percentages of clusters with three fruits per cluster were 22.9, 1.4, and 5.8%. In lateral flowers, fruit numbers per cluster were 1.20, 0.36, and 0.50 for the control, lime sulfur, and Maxcel (10 mm) treatments, respectively. In 2012, all the thinning treatments showed a positive effect on flower and fruit thinning, compared with the control. Moreover, the treatment with thinning agents did not affect fruit quality. Overall, the results suggest that a single application of flower or fruit thinning agents would be sufficient, rather than the mixed application of thinning agents, based on the observed decrease in fruit setting.
Thionins are a family of low molecular weight cysteine-rich antimicrobial peptides. We isolated a cDNA encoding thionin gene from a flower bud cDNA library of Chinese cabbage (CFT). The gene contains 611 by nucleotides with 60 bp, and 150 by untranslated regions at its N- and C-terminal, respectively. The deduced amino acid sequence encoded 133 amino acids containing precursor polypeptide. The protein reveals that the precursor has a tripartite structure: a putative signal sequence at the N-terminus, followed by a mature thionin peptide, and a C-terminal acidic domain, which facilitates transport of the mature thionin through membrane. Genomic Southern blot analysis suggests that the CFT gene may be present as a single or two copy gene in the Chinese cabbage genome. Northern blot analysis shows that the gene is specifically expressed in flowers, but not in leaves, stems, or roots. When we analyzed the antifungal activity of the recombinant CFT protein, which was expressed in E. coli using the truncated cDNA region corresponding to the mature protein part, it was not active on fungal growth inhibition.
