  • Up to now, various continuous-processing systems are used in many industrial applications such as textile machines, paper-making machines, printing machines, and so on. In these applications, the tension forced on the products in the control volume can be changed according to the velocity difference between the feeding roll and the delivery roll. Specially, the tension variation generated by the velocity difference, or the inertial effect can decreases the quality of the products in the textile process. In this paper, the tension control problem in a circular knitting machine system is treated to cope with these problems. Firstly, the tension relationship in the winding mechanism of general continuous-processing systems is modeled. Next, to effectively drive the feeding and delivery rolls in the circular knitting machine system, a new tension control method is presented by considering the inertia compensation and the velocity difference between the feeding roll and the delivery roll. Through the experimental works, it is shown that the proposed tension control method can be used to improve the performance of tension control in the control volume of the given circular knitting machine system.

  • A new relative motion control methodology for a following system to an independent leading system is proposed for controlling relative position, velocity, and tension etc. It is based on maintaining minimum relative error between two independent systems. The control command of the following system to a leading system is generated by adding the current command and the output of the relative error compensation. The proposed control method is implemented on the experimental equipment which is a wire winding-unwinding system to control the tension of the line. The results show the unwinding system(follower) following the independent motion of the winding system(leader) to control the constant tension of the line in order to keep the roller dancer in reference position. The relative motion control method proposed in this paper can be applied to high precision equipment for unwinding and winding fine wire, fine fiber, and tape etc.

  • Due to the self-equilibrium status of the cable system, the loss of the tensioning in the cable system results in other cables carrying larger tension forces than those initially calculated by structural engineers. Also, turn-buckle systems, which have been widely used to pre-tension and/or re-tension the cables, are limited to use for small cables and to provide a rough estimation for tension forces. In this study, the re-tensioning cable connection systems were developed to overcome the problems mentioned above. The main objective of the proposed system is to re-tension large cables and measure the exact amount of tension forces of the cable systems. This connection system is also combined with the wireless signal monitoring module so that engineers are able to measure the tension forces any place where the internet is available. This paper presents the development of the re-tensioning cable connection systems and experiment using the real-scale cable systems to verify the fe-tensioning and signal monitoring systems.

  • This paper presents an experimental investigation of the structural performance of a large-span girder bridge with an under-tension system. Typical long-span structures with beam and girder members have greater structural member depths and sizes to carry the moment and deflection. An under-tension system can be an effective structural system, as it allows the cables to resist some portions of the vertical loadings and deflections. To evaluate the serviceability and ultimate strength of the under-tension system, two $10m{\times}2.4m$ experimental under-tension systems were built and tested. One was developed with an H-beam section, and the other was made with a PF500 section that had the advantages of fast construction and lower construction cost. In the test, the maximum deflections at the mid-point of both beams were effectively reduced using under-tension systems. Also, the increased tension forces in the cable reduced the deflections. The PF500 members, which had a new shape and were developed using the module systems, performed better than the typical H-beam sections in terms of the deflections and ultimate strength.

  • In this paper, the fuzzy control with variable input gain is applied to maintain the consistent tension in the process of taking up and releasing texture. In the process of discharging web on one side rolling it on another, the take-up drum gets smaller on the release drum side as it gets bigger on the rolling side, thus it is necessary to change the balance of velocity between the sides. In order to solve the problem a tension controller is necessary. The PI control method has been employed to maintain the consistent tension, but the PI control method produces a problem which requires an experienced worker with the traits of the machine, in order to perform the fine adjustments according to the environment of the process. For solving the above problem, we apply fuzzy control to the tension system, in order to produce a uniform roll. For the performance test, the fuzzy controller does not need to revise the parameters. Therefore the fuzzy controller exhibits an excellent additivity for the tension system where the system is changed with time.

  • This paper presents a methodology through which the time series of the dynamic response of mooring line tension can be predicted without relying on a time-consuming nonlinear time-domain analysis. The mooring line tension for the target short-term sea states was predicted using a Hammerstein-Wiener model, a popular system identification scheme, based upon the pre-calculated motion-tension time history data for some selected short-term sea states that do not overlap with the targeted ones. The obtained mooring line tension was further processed, and a fatigue damage comparison was made between the predicted and calculated values. The results showed that the predicted time series of the mooring line tension matched the calculated one fairly well. Thus, it is expected that the methodology may be employed to enhance the efficiency of mooring line tension analysis.

  • A semi-empirical method to estimate the surface tension of molten alloys at different oxygen partial pressures is suggested in this study. The surface tension of molten Ag-Sn and Ag-Cu alloys were calculated using the Butler equation with the surface tension value of pure substance at a given oxygen partial pressure. The oxygen partial pressure ranges were $2.86{\times}10^{-12}$$1.24{\times}10^{-9}$ Pa for the Ag-Sn system and $2.27{\times}10^{-11}$$5.68{\times}10^{-4}$ Pa for the Ag-Cu system. In this calculation, the interactions of the adsorbed oxygen with other metallic constituents were ignored. The calculated results of the Ag-Sn alloys were in reasonable accordance with the experimental data within a difference of 8%. For the Ag-Cu alloy system at a higher oxygen partial pressure, the surface tension initially decreased but showed a minimum at $X_{Ag}$ = 0.05 to increase as the silver content increased. This behavior appears to be related to the oxygen adsorption and the corresponding surface segregation of the constituent with a lower surface tension. Nevertheless, the calculated results of the Ag-Cu alloys with the present model were in good agreement with the experimental data within a difference of 10%.

  • The strip tension as well as the line speed should be controlled tightly for the quality of products and productivity of the continuous strip processing line. In this paper, a new tension control algorithm with tension observer is proposed using observed tension as regulator feedback. The tension observer is based on the torque balance of a roller stand including the acceleration torque. Using this estimated tension, new tension controller can be constructed with faster dynamic response in case of line speed acceleration or deceleration. The proposed scheme needs no additional hardware because the inputs of observer, current and speed, are already being monitored by the motor drive system. Through the simulations and experiments with laboratory set up, performances fo conventional schemes and proposed one are compared. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed tension controller.

  • The cable structure is a kind of ductile structural system using the tension cable and compression column as a main element. From mechanical characteristics of the structural material, it is profitable to be subjected to the axial forces than bending moment or shear forces. And we haweto consider the local buckling when it is subjected to compression forces, but tension member can be used until the failure strength. So we can say that the tension member is the most excellent structural member. Cable dome structures are made up of only the tension cable and compression column considering these mechanical efficiency and a kind of structural system. In this system, the compression members are connected by using tension members, not connected directly each other. Also, this system is lightweight and easy to construct. But, the cable dome structural system has a danger of global buckling as external load increases. That is, as the axisymmetric structure is subjected to the axisymmetric load, the unsymmetric deformation mode is happened at some critical point and the capacity of the structure is rapidly lowered by this reason. This phenomenon Is the bifurcation and we have to reflect this in the design process of the large space structures. In this study, We investigated the nonlinear unstable phenomenon of the Geiger, Zetlin and Flower-type cable dome.
