  • The central burst defects, so-called chevroning, in wire drawing are analyzed by the rigid-plastic finite element method. The occurrence of central burst defects in wire drawing is estimated by the distribution of the hydrostatic pressure around the central part of the workpiece. It has been possible to obtain numerical boundaries which, in reduction in area vs. semicone angle plane, divide the safe and the danger zones, depending on friction factors and material properties. Based on the results of the analysis, it is suggested that the previous criterion derived from the upper bound analysis should be modified for better prediction of the defects. The back tension and the billet with a spherical hole on the central axis are also included in the analysis of the defects.

  • The problem of sound radiation from infinite elastic beams under the action of harmonic point forces is studied. The reaction due to fluid loading on the vibratory response of the beam is taken into account. The beam is assumed to occupy the plane z = 0 and to be axially infinite. The beam material and the elastic foundation re assumed to be lossless and Bernoulli-Euler beam theory including a tension force (T), damping coefficient (C) and stiffness of foundation $(\kappa_s)$ will be employed. The non-dimensional sound power is derived through integration of the surface intensity distribution over the entire beam. The expression for sound power is integrated numerically and the results are examined as a function of wavenumber ratio$(\gamma)$ and stiffness factor$(\Psi)$. Here, our purpose is to explain the response of sound power over a number of non-dimensional parameters describing tension, stiffness, damping and foundation stiffness.

  • This paper investigates the static configurations and the dynamic behaviors of a single point mooring line. To obtain the static configuration and static tension distribution along the mooring line, including the effect of fluid nonlinear drag and the elasticity of the line, the Runge-Kutta fourth order numerical method was used. The relationship between the horizontal excursion and the horizontal restoring force component of the mooring line, which is very important to a mooring line design, and the effect of a subsurface buoy on the static configuration are presented. In nonlinear dynamic analysis including nonlinear fluid drag acting on the line and geometrical nonlinearity for large deflections, finite element method using updated Lagrangian was used to obtain the solution. In the case of upper end harmonic excitation of the mooring line, the dynamic motion and the tension were also presented.

  • In this study, flexural strength by fiber reinforced for steel fiber and reinforced polyamide fiber concrete, and concrete fracture properties by improvement of flexural toughness and high-velocity projectile impact were evaluated. As a result, it was confirmed that flexural strength are improved by distribution of stress and suppress of cracks, and the back desquamation of concrete by high-velocity projectile impact is suppressed. In addition, It was observed that the spalling of rear is caused when tension stress is caused as shock wave by high-velocity projectile impact was transferred to the rear and tension stress is suppressed by fiber reinforcement.

  • This paper presents a numerical model for simulating the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls subject to cyclic loadings. The material behavior of cracked concrete is described by an orthotropic constitutive relation with tension-stiffening and compression softening effects defining equivalent uniaxial stress-strain relation in the axes of orthotropy. Especially in making analytical predictions for inelastic behaviors of RC walls under reversed cyclic loading, some influencing factors inducing the material nonlinearities have been considered. A simple hysteretic stress-strain relation of concrete, which crosses the tension-compression region, is defined. Modification of the hysteretic stress-strain relation of steel is also introduced to reflect a pinching effect depending on the shear span ratio and to represent an average stress distribution in a cracked RC element, respectively. To assess the applicability of the constitutive model for RC element, analytical results are compared with idealized shear panel and shear wall test results under monotonic and cyclic shear loadings.

  • This paper presents a study of the behaviour of bolted circular flange joints in tubular structures. In the tests on nine circular flange joints, different tension forces was applied to the joints and bolt strains, displacements and strains in the joints have been measured. Bolt strain, contact force(prying force) between flanges and stress distribution in a joint have been studied. Different methods used for the design of circular flange joints are described.

  • In this paper, a statistical analysis of fatigue crack growth behavior under constant amplitude loads has been carried out. Fatigue crack growth tests were conducted on sixteen pre-cracked compact tension (CT) specimens of the pressure vessel (SPV50) steel in controlled identical load and environmental conditions. The assessment of the statistical distribution of fatigue crack growth experimental data obtained from SPV50 steel was studied and also the correlation of the parameter C and m in the Paris-Erdogan law was discussed. The probability distribution function of fatigue crack growth life seems to follow the 3-parameter Weibull. The fatigue crack growth rate seems to follow the 3-parameter Weibull and the log-normal distribution. The coefficient of variation (COV) of fatigue crack growth life was observed to decrease as the crack grows. A strong negative linear correlation exists between the coefficient C and the exponent m in Paris model. Fatigue crack growth rate data shows a normal distribution for both m and logC.

  • In this study, the cross-sectional image has been acquired to evaluate the aggregate distribution affecting quality of lightweight aggregate concrete, and through the binarization method, the study is to calculate the aggregate area of upper and lower sections to develop the method to assess the aggregate distribution of concrete. The acquisition of cross-section image of concrete for the above was available from the cross-sectional photography of cleavage tension of a normal test specimen, and an easily accessible and convenient image analysis software was used for image analysis. As a result, through such image analyses, the proportion of aggregate distribution of upper and lower sections of the test specien could be calculated, and the proportion of aggregate area U/L value of the upper and lower regions of concrete cross-section was calculated, revealing that it could be used as the comprehensive index of aggregate distribution. Moreover, through such method, relatively easy image acquisition methods and analytic methods have been proposed, and this indicated that the development of modeling to assess aggregate distribution quantitatively is available. Based on these methods, it is expected that the extraction of fundamental data to reconsider the connectivity with processes in concrete will be available through quality assessment of quantitative concrete.
