Water-induced strength reduction is one of the most critical causes for rock deformation and failure. Understanding the effects of water on the strength, toughness and deformability of rocks are of a great importance in rock fracture mechanics and design of structures in rock. However, only a few studies have been conducted to understand the effects of water on fracture properties such as fracture toughness, crack propagation velocity, consumed energy, and microstructural damage. Thus, in this study, we focused on the understanding of how microscale damages induced by water saturation affect mesoscale mechanical and fracture properties compared with oven dried specimens along three notch orientations-divider, arrester, and short transverse. The mechanical properties of calcite-cemented sandstone were examined using standard uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) tests. In addition, fracture properties such as fracture toughness, consumed energy and crack propagation velocity were examined with cracked chevron notched Brazilian disk (CCNBD) tests. Digital Image Correlation (DIC), a non-contact optical measurement technique, was used for both strain and crack propagation velocity measurements along the bedding plane orientations. Finally, environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) was employed to investigate the microstructural damages produced in calcite-cemented sandstone specimens before and after CCNBD tests. As results, both mechanical and fracture properties reduced significantly when specimens were saturated. The effects of water on fracture properties (fracture toughness and consumed energy) were predominant in divider specimens when compared with arrester and short transverse specimens. Whereas crack propagation velocity was faster in short transverse and slower in arrester, and intermediate in divider specimens. Based on ESEM data, water in the calcite-cemented sandstone induced microstructural damages (microcracks and voids) and increased the strength disparity between cement/matrix and rock forming mineral grains, which in turn reduced the crack propagation resistance of the rock, leading to lower both consumed energy and fracture toughness ($K_{IC}$).
Aluminum alloy sheets, compared to conventional steel sheets, face challenges in press forming due to their lower elongation. To enhance their formability, extensive research has focused on forming technologies at elevated temperatures, specifically warm forming at around 300℃ and hot forming at approximately 500℃. This study proposes that the formability of aluminum alloy sheets can be significantly enhanced using a multi-stage hot forming technique. The research also investigates whether the strength of the A6061 aluminum alloy, known for its precipitation hardening, can be maintained when formed below the precipitate solid solution temperature. In the experiments, the A6061-T6 sheet underwent heating and rapid cooling between 250 and 500℃. The mechanical properties were evaluated at each stage of the process. The findings revealed that when the initial heat treatment was below 350℃, the strength of the material remained unchanged. However, at temperatures above 400℃, there was a noticeable decrease in strength coupled with an increase in elongation. Conversely, when the secondary heat treatment was conducted at temperatures of 350℃ or lower, the strength remained comparable to that of the initial heat treated material. However, at higher temperatures, a reduction in strength and an increase in elongation were observed.
Experiments and numerical simulations of the incremental upsetting test were carried out to investigate void closure behavior and mechanical characteristic of a 1.5wt%C ultra-high carbon steel. The experimental results showed that the voids become quickly smaller as the reduction ratio increases. The simulation results confirmed this behavior and indicated that the voids were completely closed at a reduction ratio of about 40~45% during incremental upsetting. After the completion of the incremental upsetting tests, the process of diffusion bonding was employed to heal the closed voids in the deformed specimens. To check the appropriate temperature for diffusion bonding, deformed specimens were kept at 800, 900, 1000 and $1100^{\circ}C$ for an hour. In order to investigate the effect of holding time for diffusion bonding at $1100^{\circ}C$, specimens were kept at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60minutes in the furnace. A distinction between closed and healed voids was clearly established using microstructural observations. In addition, subsequent tensile tests demonstrated that complete healing of a closed void was achieved for diffusion bonding temperatures in the range $900{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ with a holding time larger than 1 hour.
Information technology devices, such as cellular phones, MP3s and so on, due to restrictions of space, require thin and small micro-speakers to generate sound. The reduction of the size of micro-speakers has resulted in the decrease of sound quality, due to such factors as frequency range and sound pressure level. In this study, the acoustical properties of oval microspeakers has been studied as a function of pattern shape on the diaphragm. The other conditions of micro-speakers, except for the pattern, was not changed. When the pattern is present on the diaphragm and the shape of pattern was a whirlwind, the resonance frequency was reduced due to the decrease of tensile strength of diaphragm. The patterns presented in the semi-minor axis of diaphragm did not effect a change of resonance frequency. However, increasing the number of patterns in the semimajor axis of diaphragm became a reason for the decrease of resonance frequency on edge side. When the depth of pattern on edge side was increased, the resonance frequency was decreased due to reduction of geometrical stiffness. If the height of edge and dome were increased, the resonance frequency and geometrical stiffness rapidly increased. After reaching the maximum values, they began to decrease with the continuous increase of height.
The laser strengthening of 35kgf/㎟ and 60kgf/㎟ grade steel sheets is investigated by using CO$_2$ laser beam irradiation. The increase of tensile strength is dominated by the number of fully penetrated melting line. Also. the optimal laser input energy(hardness) and the number of melting line (melting width) are important variables for laser strengthening. Local strengthening by laser beam may be effective for the weight reduction of components where the tailored welded blank can not be applied.
The objective of this paper is to determine the effect of process parameters on the behavior of a 18Cr-10Mn-$0.44N_2$ nitrogen steel sample deformed by hot rolling. Compression tests were carried out at high temperatures to determine the flow stresses needed for a finite element(FE) analysis. The strain rate, ranging from 0.1 to $1.0s^{-1}$, significantly affected the flow stress at temperatures higher than $1,000^{\circ}C$. Non-isothermal rolling simulations and laboratory rolling tests were performed with plate specimens 14.5mm thick, 135mm wide and 226mm long. A rolling reduction of 15% per pass leading to a cumulative rolling reduction of 60% was determined as optimal. The extension ratio of 176.5% in the length direction was about 30.4 times greater than the extension ratio of 5.8% in the width direction. Isotropic properties for tensile strength, microstructure and grain size were measured after mock-up hot rolling tests. The results from the mockup tests were found to be in good agreement with those of the simulations.
The main purpose of the present study has been placed on investigating the effects of controlled rolling and cooling on the microstructures and mechanical properties of C-Si-Mn-V steels for cold forming. The steels were manufactured in vacuum induction melting(VIM) furnace and casted to 1.1ton Ingots and the ingots were forged to $\Box150$ billet. The forged billets were reheated in walking beam furnace and rolled to coil, the stocks were rolled by Controlled Rolling and Cooling Technology (CRCT), so rolled at low temperature by water spraying applied in rolling stage and acceleratly cooled before coiling. Rolled coils were cold drawed to the degree of $27\%$ of area reduction without heat treatment. Microstructual observation, tensile test, compression test and charpy impact tests were conducted. The mechanical properties of the steels were changed by area reduction of cold drawing and it is founded that there are optimum level of cold drawing to minimize compression stress for these steels. From the result of this study, it is conformed that mechanical properties and microstructure of C-Si-Mn-V steels for cold forming were enhanced by accelerated cooling and founded optimum level of cold drawing.
The laser strengthening of $35kgf/\textrm{mm}^2$ grade steel sheet is investigated by using $CO_2$ laser beam irradiation. The increase of tensile strength is dominated by the number of fully penetrated melting lines. Also, the optimal laser irradiation pattern is obtained by 3-point bending test. Local laser strengthening clay be effective for the weight reduction of automobile components where the tailored welded blank can not be applied.
Among the many maunfactured processes of producing multi filamentary composites, in situ process is widely used owing tv its simplicity and easyness of mass production. In this study, the mechanical and electromagnetic properties of Cu-Fe composite materials was investigated. The tensile strength of the Cu-Fe wires increased as the Fe content and reduction ratio were increased. The Cu-30 wt%Fe composites had the best properties in terms of figure merits compared to the other Cu-Fe composites made in this study or the commercially manufactured 6/1 ACSR cables of Cu cable. The coercivity was decreased by increasing Fe content, but the squareness was increased greatly. As increasing reduction ratio, the coercivity and squareness increased up to the maximum points, and then decreased. For example, the maximum values were obtained at $0.09mm{\phi}$ for Cu-30 wt%Fe composites and at $0.066mm{\phi}$ for Cu-45 wt%Fe composites. The magnetic property of Cu-Fe wires produced by precipitation treatment was higher than that of Cu-Fe wires produced by thermomechanical treatment. By annealing Cu-Fe wires after drawing process, the coercivity, remanence and squareness were improved.
This paper presents a new cost-effective hybrid GFRP-Concrete deck system that the GFRP panel serves as both tensile reinforcement and stay-in-place form. In order to understand the fatigue behavior of such hybrid deck, fatigue test on a full-scale specimen under sagging moment was conducted, and a series of static tests were also carried out after certain repeated loading cycles. The fatigue test results indicated that such hybrid deck has a good fatigue performance even after 3.1 million repeated loading cycles. A three-dimensional finite element model of the hybrid deck was established based on experimental work. The results from finite element analyses are in good agreement with those from the tests. In addition, flexural fatigue analysis considering the reduction in flexural stiffness and modulus under cyclic loading was carried out. The predicted flexural strength agreed well with the analytical strength from finite element simulation, and the calculated fatigue failure cycle was consistent with the result based on related S-N curve and finite element analyses. However, the flexural fatigue analytical results tended to be conservative compared to the tested results in safety side. The presented overall investigation may provide reference for the design and construction of such hybrid deck system.
