  • The effects of alloying element and grain refinement on the tensile properties of magnesium alloy poured into sand mold were investigated. The strength of magnesium alloy was greatly increased by the addition of aluminium and that was increased with the increased aluminum content added up to 8.10 wt% and decreased beyond that. Even though the strength of Mg-8.10 wt%Al alloy was rather decreased by the addition of zinc, that was increased with increased zinc content added up to 0.50 wt% and decreased with the increased one beyond that. The maximum tensile strength was obtained with 0.50 wt%Mn added. The strength and elongation were simultaneously increased with grain refinement and the optimum amount of strontium addition for this was 0.30 wt%. The optimum chemical composition was obtained and the yield strength, tensile strength and elongation of the alloy with this composition were 90.2, 176.3MPa and 4.43%, respectively.

  • The study was investigated on the effect of austenitizing and austempering conditions on retained austenite amount and carbon contents in retained austenite and simultaneously the effect of these variation on hardness, tensile and impact properties. A material of as-cast condition is composed of bull's eye structure with ferrite surrounding spheroidized graphite having about $5-10{\mu}m$ size and matrix structure of pearlite. Then, the contents of spheroidized graphite was about 5%. The retained austenite and carbon contents in the retained austenite were increased with the increasing of austenitizing and austempering temperatures, while the retained austenite showed the peak value and is decreased with increasing of austempering time. With increasing of austenitizing temperature, tensile strength, elongation and impact absorb energy increased and hardness was almost not changed, while with increasing of austempering temperature, tensile strength and hardness decreased, whereas elongation and impact absorb energy was increased. With increasing of retained austenite amount, the tensile strength is slowly decreased but elongation was increased with direct proportion. Also, Impact absorb energy is shown identity value untile about 18%, but rapidly increased above it. Elongation and Impact absorb energy are strongly controlled by the amount of retained austenite, but tensile strength is affected with various factors such as retained austenite amount and bainitic morphology.

  • Influence of Si contents on the mechanical properties and microstructure of austempered ductile iron was investigated. Four different Si contents between 2.0 and 2.9% were used. Austenitizing was performed at $890^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs and austempering temperatures were both 340 and $380^{\circ}C$ for 0.5, 1, and 2 hrs. Nodule content was more than $300/mm^2$ and nodularity was more than 90%. Microstructure was revealed using nital and retained austenite was measured by x-ray diffractometer. Tensile test, no-notch Charpy impact test and wear test were performed. Tensile strength was improved as Si content increased and both elongation and impact toughness had peak at 2.6%Si. The specimen austempered at $380^{\circ}C$ showed lower tensile strength than that of $340^{\circ}C$, but showed higher elongation. However, austempering temperature of $380^{\circ}C$ was desirable because that of $340^{\circ}C$ was close to lower bainite transformation. As austempering time increased, tensile strength and elongation were improved and optimum condition was obtained for 2 hrs heat treatment.

  • This paper considers the moisture permeability and fashion in the upper fabrics of cotton fabric shoes woven into various tissues and properties measured to examine the use as upper fabrics. We measured the tissues of the manufactured upper fabric are 1/3 twill, $4{\times}4$ weft rib, Maya, Triple, Deformed twill design (DTD), Diamond tissues and tear strength, tensile strength, breaking elongation, stretching under load at 100N, stitch tear resistance, and fastness. In the case of $4{\times}4$ weft rib, the tear strength and tensile strength were excellent; however, the elongation and stitch tear resistance at 100N load were less than the standard value. DTD fabrics are characterized by physical properties in the warp direction that are superior to those in the weft direction; however, the tear strength and tensile strength in the weft direction are less than the standard value. The 1/3 twill fabrics showed high tensile strength value and stitch tear resistance value in the warp direction; however, toughness, the main property of the shoe upper, was below the standard value. Triple and diamond fabrics, which have a significant effect on the performance of the shoe upper fabric, also had less than the standard value of tear strength. Maya upper fabric for shoes has better properties than other upper fabrics except for the elongation at break, and the stitch tear resistance has a value of 178% in the warp direction and 214% in the weft direction compared to the standard value. Therefore, the Maya fabric showed the possibility of being used as an upper textile for shoes.

  • The mechanical behavior and microstructural evolution in the ignition-proof Mg-Zn-Ca-Zr alloy produced by the semisolid squeeze casting are clarified and the mechanical properties are also compared with those of squeeze cast Mg-Zn-Ca-Zr alloy. The tensile strength and elongation increase slightly as the solid fraction depending on temperature decreases, while the 0.2% proof stress decreases. The size of primary crystal increases with increasing holding time. The tensile strength and 0.2% proof stress of the semi-solid squeeze cast Mg-Zn-Ca-Zr alloy decrease as the size of primary crystal increases, indicating the dependence of strength on the size of primary crystal. The elongation of the semi-solid squeeze cast Mg-Zn-Ca-Zr alloy is two times as large as the squeeze cast Mg-Zn-Ca-Zr alloy and the tensile strength is unchanged despite the growth of primary crystal, resulting from the refining of the melted ${\alpha}Mg$ phase and the brittle eutectic compound as well as the reduction of solidification shrinkage and porosities.

  • This study has been investigated for tensile properties with lead-free brass containing 1 wt.% of Bi. And also characteristic of corrosion resistance was analyzed by polarization test. An increase of tempering temperature was found to tend to decrease tensile strength, and percentage of elongation was shown to be the lowest value at $300^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, the elongation was increased with an increase of tempering temperature after $300^{\circ}C$. The change of mechanical properties was closely related with the content and shape of acicular Witmanst$\ddot{a}$tten ${\alpha}$ formed at the interface of ${\beta}$ phase as well as in ${\beta}$ phase. Tensile strength had a tendency to be decreased with an increase of test temperature. The elongation was shown to be the lowest value at around $300^{\circ}C$, while it began to increase as test temperature rose after $300^{\circ}C$. It might be speculated that the reason that elongation was decreased was found to form bismuth film at the interface of ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ phase leading to be easily brittle when loaded by tensile stress. The lead-free brass containing 1 wt.% of Bi had similar characteristic of corrosion resistance with a free-cutting brass with 3.4 wt. % of Pb in spite of higher fraction of ${\beta}$ phase.

  • Microstructure and mechanical properties are investigated for 0.15C-1.5Mn-1.5Al TRIP aided cold rolled steels containing $0.05wt\%P$ and $0.1wt\%P$. Despite of the complete replacement of Si by Al, the TRIP steel shows tensile strength of 700MPa and total elongation of $35\%$ by addition of $0.1wt\%$ P. Tensile strength of P added TRIP steels is not only affected by the solid solution hardening but also the volume fraction of retained austenite. As P content increases from $0.05wt\%$ to $0.1wt\%$, tensile strength and volume fraction of retained austenite are increased, but elongation is decreased. The lower stability of austenite in $0.1wt\%$ P added steel is responsible for the decrease of the elongation.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of heat treatment on mechanical properties in $0.016^{{\prime}{\prime}}{\times}0.022^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ blue Elgiloy wires and to measure the amounts of nickel and chromium released from the wires in artificial saliva. Ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation were measured with universal testing machine (Instron). and the amounts of nickel and chromium released from the sample were measured with atomic absorption spectrophotometer after one week immersion in the artificial saliva. Ultimate tensile strength and yield strength were progressively increased below $1000^{\circ}F$, but elongation was decreased. And the results were reversed above $1100^{\circ}F$. After heat treatment of the sample for 9 minutes at $1000^{\circ}F$, the maximum tensile strength and yield strength were $213.6kg/mm^2$, $140.1kg/mm^2$, respectively. Both tensile strength and yield strength were decreased progressively above $1100^{\circ}F$. Elongation was appeared the minimum value (8.6%) after heat treatment for 9 minutes and 12 minutes at $1000^{\circ}F$. There was a pronounced increase in nickel and chromium liberation with increasing time and temperature. The maximum amounts of nickel and chromium released form the sample were $4.947{\mu}m/cm^2$, $3.088{\mu}g/cm^2$, respectively after heat treatment for 12 minutes at $1300^{\circ}F$. Heat treatment is applied to orthodontic wires, especially cobalt-chromium alloys, for the purpose of stress-relievning and hardening. When the heat-treatment of orthodontic wires, the heating procedure should be well controlled in order to have no effect on corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
