Polymer-cement composites are known repair materials. The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of various amount of dispersion of carboxylated styrene-butadience copolymer on the selected mechanical properties of polymer-cement concrete (PCC) and on its adhesion to ordinary concrete. The compressive, flexural and tensile strengths as well as frost resistance and fracture resistance of the composites are tested. Adhesion strength of PCC to ordinary concrete, as one of most important performance of good repair material is evaluated and analyzed using three test methods. The results obtained in standard pull-off test are compared with the two other tests. The first one, which is an adaptation of WST (wedge splitting test) characterizes crack propagation in the plane of bond created during repair. In the second test the resistance to shear is a measure of adhesion strength.
The plasma sprayed Cr$_{2}$C$_{2}$-NiCr coatings are widely used as wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant materials. The mechanical properties of the plasma sprayed Cr$_{2}$C$_{2}$-NiCr coatings were examined in this study. The distribution of the residual stress with the coating thickness was also examined by X-ray diffraction method. The pore in the coatings could be classified into two types ; one is the intrinsic pore originated from the spraying powder, the other is the extrinsic pore formed during spraying. During the tensile adhesion test, the fracture occurred at the interface of top coat and substrate or top coat and bond coat depending on the existence of bond coat. It was found that the compressive residual stress near the interface decreased with the increase of the top coat thickness. The tensile adhesion strength of the coating without bond coat was higher than that with bond coat, because the coating with bond coat has higher horizontal crack density near the interface between bond coat and top coat.
Extraoral maxillofacial prostheses are essential for restoring facial structures that are lost as a result of congenital missing, injuries from accidents, surgical treatments of head and neck cancer. Recently, silicone is the most useful material for this purpose and is more advantageous than other maxillofacial prosthetic materials. However, there are some problems for long-term usage of silicone prostheses due to tear and color change. These are major contributing environmental factors to those problems that are such as ultraviolet light, cleansing agents, changes in humidity and successive adhesion and removal. The aim of this study is to evaluate the physical properties and color changes of maxillofacial prosthetic silicone material by those environmental factors using A-2186 silicone material (Factor II, USA) and two pigments, cadmium yellow medium and cosmetic red. Aluminium molds were fabricated according to the ASTM No. D412 & D624 specifications and resulted specimens from molds were fabicated and treated as follows. Control group and experimental I group were fabricated with 0.1% wt. pigment mixing in silicone elastomer and II-1 group, II-2 group of experimental II group were fabricated with 0.2%, 0.3% wt. pigment mixing in silicone elastomer, respectively. Control group was kept in darkroom at room temperature, I-1 group was kept under natural sunlight during 1week, I-2 group was soaked in 20% soap water during 1wk. I-3 group was successively adhered and removed 200 times on inner region of arm using Daro adhesive-33. Experimental II groups were kept in darkroom at room temperature. Instron universal testing machine was used to measure the % elongation, tensile strength, tear strength of control, experimental I, II groups and reflectance spectrophotometer(COLOR EYE-3000, Macbeth, USA) was used to measure the color differences between control group and experimental I group. The results were as follows : 1. When compared with control group, natural weathering group and 20% soap-water soaking group had no significant differences in % elongation(p>0.05). 2. 200 times successive adhesion and removal group, 0.2% wt. pigment group and 0.3% wt. pigment group had significant decreases in % elongation(p<0.05). 3. Natural weathering group, 20% soap-water soaking group and 200 times successive adhesion and removal group had no significant differences in tensile strength (p>0.05). 4. 0.2%, 0.3% wt. pigment groups had significant decreases in tensile strength(p<0.05). 5. Values of all experimental groups were decreased in tear strength. and 200 times successive adhesion and removal group had significant decrease in tear strength(p<0.05). 6. Natural weathering group and 20% soap-water soaking group had significant color differences(${\Delta}E$) and it could be detectable to naked eye(p<0.05). 7. Color differences between control group and 200 times adhesion and removal group were not detectable to the naked eye (${\Delta}E<1.0$).
In order to estimate the wettability of the borosilicate glasses with different composition on the noble metals of gold and silver, the measurements of the contact angle between the solid and the liquid were made at various temperatures and holding times using the sessil-drop method. The wetting behavior and the adhesion of the phases were strongly influenced by the thermal or the physical characteristics of the materials. The dependence of wetting angle ($\theta$) on the holding time (t) could be represented by the relation of $\theta$=a.tb, whereby the wettability of the systems was quantitatively compared. Also with increasing content of borosilicate glass in the glass-gold matrix composite, the tensile strength was decreased whereas the elastic modulus was increased.
We have studied on the surface and adhesion properties for acrylic terpolymers, having both hydrophobic and hydrophilic side chains, synthesized via solution polymerization. In order to develop a waterborne material. we tried to synthesize these terpolymers via emulsion polymerization. The polymeric emulsion synthesized was mainly composed of methyl methacrylate (MMA), methoxy-polyethyleneglycol methacrylate (MPEGMA) having hydrophilic side chains and methoxypolypropyleneglycol methacrylate (MPEGMA) having hydrophobic side chains. The viscosities of this series increased with an increase in the content of the co-monomer such as MPEGMA and (MPEGMA). This behavior resulted in the increase in the diameter and heterogeneity of the emulsion particle via AFM observation. Furthermore. the tensile adhesion strength and 90-degree peel strength of the adhesive of these polymeric emulsions were measured. In the case of polymeric emulsion composed of the same content of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic component, the adhesion property showed the highest value. However, since the adhesion properties as a practical applicable adhesive were poor, some improvements were required. When the composition above was modified with butyl acrylate (BA), the improvement effect on adhesion strength was accepted. In particular, 90-degree peel strength increased up to a maximum of 400% of the original value.
The objective of this study was to determine the effective concentration of carboxymethyl chitoaan(CMC) solution on preventing intraperitoneal adhesions. In this study, 60 rats were divided into four groups : an untreated control group and three experimental groups that were treated with 3 ml of 3, 5, and 7% CMC solution. Adhesions were induced by suturing both the ileal serosa and peritoneum scraped until petechial bleeding occurred. CMC solutions were instilled intraperitoneally immediately before closure of the peritoneomuscular layer. The tensile strength of formed adhesions was measured by using a computerized tensiometer. Histopathological changes of adhesions were evaluated by hematoxylin-eosin for light microscopic examination and Massons's trichrom staining for collagen fibers. All of CMC solutions reduced significantly the tensile strength of the adhesions. CMC inhibited the increase of inflammatory cell infiltration and damage of adhesion spot, and accelerated the collagen synthesis and neovascuiarization. No significant differences were observed among all of CMC concentration at inhibiting adhesion formation. Therefore, we could conclude that 3% CMC, the lowest concentration adopted in this study, was appropriate to prevent the formation of peritoneal adhesion.
The purpose of this study was to estimate the changes of tensile bond strength according to the difference in lining materials and lining area. Seventy non-carious extracted human molars were used in the present study, and they were randomly assigned into 2 experimental groups according to the difference in lining materials. Each experimental group was subdivided into 3 groups according to the difference in lining area. Circular cavities were prepared on the dentin surface to a diameter of 1.5mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm and the prepared cavities were filled with Fuji II LC( Glass Ionomer Cement : GIC) or Dycal. Dentin specimens without circular cavity were used as control group. The primer and bonding agent of All-Bond 2 and composite resin (Z-100, 3M Dental Products, U. S. A.) were applied to the exposed dentin surface with or without lining. Tensile bond strengths for the experimental specimens were then measured. To examine the interface between dentin and liner & between liner and composite resin, two specimens from each group were fabricated and observed under the SEM. The results were as follows. 1. Tensile bond strength for the specimens lined with GIC was higher than that for specimens lined with Dycal. However, there was no significant difference between two groups(p>0.05). 2. Tensile bond strength for the specimens lined with GIC in a diameter of 1.5mm(GIC-1.5mm lining group) was statistically higher than that for the GIC-2.0mm lining group and GIC-2.5mm lining group(p<0.05). 3. Tensile bond strength for the specimens lined with Dycal in a diameter of 2.5mm (Dycal-2.5mm lining group)was statistically lower than that for Dycal-1.5mm lining group and Dycal-2.0mm lining group(p<0.05). 4. It was possible to observe the good adhesion of the resin composite to the GIC and the presence of a fissure between GIC and dentin all along the interface. Interfacial gaps of 7.2-$72.2{\mu}m$ between GIC and dentin were observed. The interfacial gap between GIC and dentin at the cavity base was greater. However, the gap was gradually decreased toward the occlusal portion. 5. It was possible to observe the poor adhesion of the resin composite to the Dycal. The detachment of Dycal was occurred all along the composite resin-Dycal interface, and the gaps of 2.0-$30.1{\mu}m$ were formed. In all the specimens, polymerization shrinkage of resin composite caused the detachment of Dycal from the body of Dycal. At a Dycal-dentin interface. it was possible to observe the good adhesion. but poor adhesion with interfacial gap of 2.9-$26.8{\mu}m$ was observed partially.
This study was performed to compare the efficacy of carboxymethylchitosan fabric (CMCF) with that of the combination of CMCF and low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) for the prevention of postoperative uterine adhesion in rats. Adhesions were induced by suturing both the uterine serosa and peritoneum abrased until petechial bleeding occurred. Fourteen days later, adhesions were evaluated clinically and histopathologically. The mean tensile strength was significantly decreased in the CMCF and CMCF+LMWH groups compared to that of control group, and the CMCF+LMWH group had the lowest tensile strength. The distance of adhesion site was highest in the CMCF group and slightly decreased in the CMCF+LMWH group comparing to that of control group. The inflammatory cell infiltration and neovascularization of the CMCF group were significantly lower than those of the control group. It was observed that the damage at intestinal serosa was significantly decreased in the CMCF+LMWH group comparing to that of control group. Therefore, it was concluded that CMCF and LMWH may be useful to prevent postoperative uterine adhesion in rats.
The effect of polymeric diphenyl methane-4,4-diisocyanate (pMDI) or 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) in the UMF resin was discussed for improvement of the dry and wet shear strengths of plywood manufactured from high moisture content veneers. The curing behavior of UMF resin by pMDI or HDI content was examined by DSC and TGA, and its adhesion performance was evaluated by dry and wet shear strength tests of plywood. With the increase of pMDI content in the UMF resin, the curing temperature, reaction enthalpy (${\Delta}H$), and thermal stability consistently increased. With the increase of HDI content in the UMF resin, however, the curing temperature and reaction enthalpy (${\Delta}H$) decreased consistently and the thermal stability slightly increased in the range of 200 to $400^{\circ}C$ but decreased beyond $400^{\circ}C$. Also, the dry tensile shear strength increased up to the pMDI content of 5% and then decreased with its further addition but the wet tensile shear strength showed slight tendency to increase with the increase of pMDI content in the UMF resin. As the HDI content increased, however, the dry and wet tensile shear strengths of plywood consistently increased.
