The results of experimental investigation of coherent structures beneath wind-generated waves in deep water are presented. Vorticity fields of deepwater wind waves were visualized by analyzing the velocity fields obtained by PIV measurements under different wind and fetch conditions. In addition, spatio-temporal evolution of the coherent structures and subsequent changes in vertical profiles of the instantaneous vorticity were qualitatively examined. It was found that a coherent structure is formed right underneath the wave crest and traveled in phase with the surface wave. The direction of rotation of the coherent structure was contrary to the wave orbital motion when wind speed is less than 10 m/s, while was same as the wave orbital motion when wind speed is approximately 13 m/s and wave breaking occurs at the wave crest. In the near-surface region, complex vortex-vortex interactions were observed according to the traveling of the coherent structure. In contrast, coherent structures far below the water surface changed little due to weak influence of orbital motion by the surface waves.
This paper presents an extensive analysis of unsteady wind loading data on a 18 m long and 2 m high wall in a rural environment, with the wind at a range of angles to the wall normal. The data is firstly analyzed using standard statistical techniques (moments of probability distributions, auto- and cross-correlations, auto- and cross-spectra etc.). The analysis is taken further using a variety of less conventional methods - conditional sampling, proper orthogonal decomposition and wavelet analysis. It is shown that, even though the geometry is simple, the nature of the unsteady flow is surprisingly complex. The fluctuating pressures on the front face of the wall are to a great extent caused by the turbulent fluctuations in the upstream flow, and reflect the oncoming flow structures. The results further suggest that there are distinct structures in the oncoming flow with a variety of scales, and that the second order quasi-steady approach can predict the pressure fluctuations quite well. The fluctuating pressures on the rear face are also influenced by the fluctuations in the oncoming turbulence, but also by unsteady fluctuations due to wake unsteadiness. These fluctuations have a greater temporal and spatial coherence than on the front face and the quasi-steady method over-predicts the extent of these fluctuations. Finally the results are used to check some assumptions made in the current UK wind loading code of practice.
In this study, visible and near infrared channels of NOAA/AVHRR data were used to classify land use and vegetation types over Korean peninsula. Analyzing forest stand structures and prediction of forest productivity using satellite data were also reviewed. Land use and land cover classification was made by unsupervised clustering methods. After monthly Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) composite images were derived from April to November 1998, the derived composite images were used as temporal feature vector's in this clustering analysis. Visually interpreted, the classification result was satisfactory in overall for it matched well with the general land cover patterns. But subclassification of forests into coniferous, deciduous, and mixed forests were much confused due to the effects of low ground resolution of AVHRR data and without defined classification scheme. To investigate into the forest stand structures, digital forest type maps were used as an ancillary data. Forest type maps, which were compiled and digitalized by Forestry Research Institute, were registered to AVHRR image coordinates. Two data sets were compared and percent forest cover over whole region was estimated by multiple regression analysis. Using this method, other forest stand structure characteristics within the primary data pixels are expected to be extracted and estimated.
Seasonal variation in size and number of floral structures was examined in two massachusetts populations of chelidonium major, a self-compatible herb. All floral charcters except for anther number per flower declind significantly during a 3 week period. However, temporal patterns were not identical among characters or between popolations. The result indicate that floral characters varied in conjunction with flower diameter, but that the pattern of changes in floral characters in response to environments may not be easy to predict. Principal components analysis was conducted to environments may not be easy to predict. principal compenents analysis was conducted tl identify the functional relationship among floral male function, and female function, respectively, perhaps reflecting the functional distinction of floral characters. Based on this pattern, the relative allocation to sexual structures within flowers was examined: male allocation was relatively greater than female allocation eary or in the middle of flowering season, depending upon populations. Temporalvariation in relative allocation within flowers was not independent of seed tield components:; different combinations of the size and number of floral characters were correlated with different seed yield components, for example, either seed size or number per fruit, during a season. in particular, allocations to attractive and male structures were highly correlated with mean seed weight only earlier in the season. These result provide some evidence that flowering phenolgy is an important comportant to be considered in the study of sexual allocation.

This article is concerned with effective numerical techniques for partial differential equation (PDE)-based image restoration. Numerical realizations of most PDE-based denoising models show a common drawback: loss of fine structures. In order to overcome the drawback, the article introduces a new time-stepping procedure, called the method of nonflat time evolution (MONTE), in which the timestep size is determined based on local image characteristics such as the curvature or the diffusion magnitude. The MONTE provides PDE-based restoration models with an effective mechanism for the equalization of the net diffusion over a wide range of image frequency components. It can be easily applied to diverse evolutionary PDE-based restoration models and their spatial and temporal discretizations. It has been numerically verified that the MONTE results in a significant reduction in numerical dissipation and preserves fine structures such as edges and textures satisfactorily, while it removes the noise with an improved efficiency. Various numerical results are shown to confirm the claim.
Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute The observation of particles and waves using a single satellite inherently suffers from space-time ambiguity. Recently, such ambiguity has often been resolved by multi-satellite observations; however, the inter-satellite distances were generally larger than 100 km. Hence, the ambiguity could be resolved only for large-scale (> 100 km) structures while numerous microscale phenomena have been observed at low altitude satellite orbits. In order to resolve those spatial and temporal variations of the microscale plasma structures on the topside ionosphere, SNIPE mission consisted of four (TBD) nanosatellites (~10 kg) will be launched into a polar orbit at an altitude of 700 km (TBD). Two pairs of satellites will be deployed on orbit and the distances between each satellite will be from 10 to 100 km controlled by a formation flying algorithm. The SNIPE mission is equipped with scientific payloads which can measure the following geophysical parameters: density/temperature of cold ionospheric electrons, energetic (~100 keV) electron flux, and magnetic field vectors. All the payloads will have high temporal resolution (~ 16 Hz (TBD)). This mission is planned to launch in 2020. The SNIPE mission aims to elucidate microscale (100 m-10 km) structures in the topside ionosphere (below altitude of 1,000 km), especially the fine-scale morphology of high-energy electron precipitation, cold plasma density/temperature, field-aligned currents, and electromagnetic waves. Hence, the mission will observe microscale structures of the following phenomena in geospace: high-latitude irregularities, such as polar-cap patches; field-aligned currents in the auroral oval; electro-magnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves; hundreds keV electrons' precipitations, such as electron microbursts; subauroral plasma density troughs; and low-latitude plasma irregularities, such as ionospheric blobs and bubbles. We have developed a 6U nanosatellite bus system as the basic platform for the SNIPE mission. Three basic plasma instruments shall be installed on all of each spacecraft, Particle Detector (PD), Langmuir Probe (LP), and Scientific MAGnetometer (SMAG). In addition we now discuss with NASA and JAXA to collaborate with the other payload opportunities into SNIPE mission.

Because we can usually get many information through analyzing trajectories of moving objects on spatial networks, efficient trajectory index structures are required to achieve good retrieval performance on their trajectories. However, there has been little research on trajectory index structures for spatial networks such as FNR-tree and MON-tree. Also, because FNR-tree and MON-tree store the segment unit of moving objects, they can't support the trajectory of whole moving objects. In this paper, we propose an efficient trajectory index structures based on signatures on a spatial network, named SigMO-Tree. For this, we divide moving object data into spatial and temporal attributes, and design an index structure which supports not only range query but trajectory query by preserving the whole trajectory of moving objects. In addition, we divide user queries into trajectory query based on spatio-temporal area and similar-tralectory query, and propose query processing algorithms to support them. The algorithm uses a signature file in order to retrieve candidate trajectories efficiently Finally, we show from our performance analysis that our trajectory index structure outperforms the existing index structures like FNR-Tree and MON-Tree.

In this paper, we analyze the transient electromagnetic response from three-dimensional(3-D) dielectric bodies using a time-domain electric field integral equation formulation. The solution method in this paper is based on the Galerkin's method that involves separate spatial and temporal testing procedures. Triangular patch basis functions are used for spatial expansion and testing functions for arbitrarily shaped 3-D dielectric structures. The time-domain unknown coefficients of the equivalent electric and magnetic currents are approximated as an orthonormal basis function set that is derived from the Laguerre functions. These basis functions are also used as the temporal testing. Numerical results involving equivalent currents and far fields computed by the proposed method are presented.
This paper presents some fundamental results on the dynamics of the periodic Karman wake behind a circular cylinder. The wake is treated like a dynamical system. External forcing is then introduced and its effect investigated. The main result obtained is the following. Perturbation of the wake, by controlled cylinder oscillations in the flow direction at a frequency equal to the Karman vortex shedding frequency, leads to instability of the Karman vortex structure. The resulting wake structure oscillates at half the original Karman vortex shedding frequency. For higher frequency excitation the primary pattern involves symmetry breaking of the initially shed symmetric vortex pairs. The Karman shedding phenomenon can be modeled by a nonlinear oscillator. The symmetrical flow perturbations resulting from the periodic cylinder excitation can also be similarly represented by a nonlinear oscillator. The oscillators represent two flow modes. By considering these two nonlinear oscillators, one having inline shedding symmetry and the other having the Karman wake spatio-temporal symmetry, the possible symmetries of subsequent flow perturbations resulting from the modal interaction are determined. A theoretical analysis based on symmetry (group) theory is presented. The analysis confirms the occurrence of a period-doubling instability, which is responsible for the frequency halving phenomenon observed in the experiments. Finally it is remarked that the present findings have important implications for vortex shedding control. Perturbations in the inflow direction introduce 'control' of the Karman wake by inducing a bifurcation which forces the transfer of energy to a lower frequency which is far from the original Karman frequency.

Studies in landscape ecology have emphasized on the relationship between landscape patterns and shapes. A variety of landscape metrics has been developed so far to quantify landscape structures. Therefore, their developments and widespread applications become possible with the advent of spatial information systems including geographic information systems(GIS) and remote sensing. This study is to grasp the change of land use and landscape ecology indices, and to analyze the change of landscape structure in a part of Gyeonggi-do during 15 years from 1985 to 2000. Green-area distribution maps and agricultural-area distribution maps for the analysis were reconstructed from land cover maps constructed by WAMIS(Water Management Information System). And then, 4 landscape ecology indices(TA, LPI, SHAPE_AM, CAI_MN) for the green-area and 5 landscape ecology indices(TA, PD, LPI, LSI, CAI_MN) for the agricultural-area were selected by using pearson correlation analysis. According to the spatio-temporal change analysis using landscape ecology indices, the green-area fragmentation of Yongin was the most severe of the study area and the agricultural-area fragmentation of Gwangju and Namyangju was more severe than any other regions.
