  • An investigation into the rainfall variability in time and space in the Nam River dam basin of Korea was made with use of the coefficient of variation and the correlation coefficient. The Nam River dam basin is a small mountainous watershed where the wind direction and orography are the dominant influences on the pattern and distribution of rainfall. It was found that the characteristics of rainfall distribution vary with elevation, position, wind direction. And in the three directions considered, it was found that there is the related formulation dependent on the distance between two stations. The resultrs of this study on the temporal and spatial characteristics of rainfall can be used in the design of raingauge networks, hydrological forecasting, and so on in the Nam River dam basin.

  • This study was performed to analyse the rainfall and the rainfall-runoff characteristics of a rural watershed. The Sangwha basin($105.9km^{2}$) in the Geum river system was selected for this study. The arithmetic mean method, the Thiessen's weighing method, and the isohyetal method were used to analyse areal rainfall distribution and the Huff's quartile method was used to analyse temporal rainfall distribution. In addition, daily runoff analyses were peformed using the DAWAST and tank model. In the model calibration, the data from June through November, 1999 were used. In the model calibration, the observed runoff depth was 513.7mm and runoff rate was 45.2%, and the DAWAST model simulated runoff depth was 608.6mm and runoff rate was 53.5%, and the tank model runoff depth was 596.5mm and runoff rate was 52.5%, respectively. In the model test, the data from June through November, 2000 were used. In the model test, the observed runoff depth was 1032.3mm and runoff rate was 72.5%, and the DAWAST model simulated runoff depth was 871.6mm and runoff rate was 61.3%, and the tank model runoff depth was 825.4mm and runoff rate was 58%, respectively. The DAWAST and tank model's $R^{2}$ and RMSE were 0.85, 3.61mm, and 0.85, 2.77mm in 1999, and 0.83, 5.73mm, and 0.87, 5.39mm in 2000, respectively. Both models predicted low flow runoff better than flood runoff.

  • In this study, the temporal and spatial variation in precipitable water vapor (PWV) was analyzed for typhoon Ewiniar which had made landfall in the Korean peninsula in 2006. To make a contour map of PWV, zenith total delay (ZTD) was calculated using about 60 GPS permanent stations in Korea, and the pressure and temperature data of nearby AWS stations were interpolated and applied to the equation for calculating the PWV. While Typhoon Ewiniar was migrating north from the southern coast to the eastern coast of Korea, the PWV migrated showing a spatial distribution similar to that of rainfall. Also, the fluctuating pattern of the normalized PWV was analyzed, and the moving speed of the PWV was estimated using the delay time of the increase/decrease pattern in the eight-test stations. The result indicated that the moving speed of the PWV was about 35 km/h, which was similar to the average moving speed of the typhoon (38.9 km/h).

  • This study is to propose the temporal pattern of design rainfall which causes maximum peak discharge, and to analyze the relation of catchment characteristics and critical durations for gauged midsize catchment. Hydrologic analysis has done over the 44 midsize catchments with 50-5,000$\textrm{km}^2$. The type of temporal pattern of design rainfall which causes maximum peak discharge has resulted in Huff's 4 quartile distribution method for effective rainfall(AMC III) The peak discharges of 24hr rainfall duration are similar to those of critical duration for 50-600$\textrm{km}^2$, and the peak discharges of 48hr rainfall duration are similar to those of critical duration for 600-5,000$\textrm{km}^2$. Therefore, if the proper rainfall intensity formula is selected, 24hr or 48hr rainfall duration may be regarded as the critical duration of midsize catchment. A simple regression equation is derived by using a catchment area and critical duration with high correlation for the case of effective rainfall(AMC III). Therefore, it can be used to determine the critical duration of ungauged catchment with 50-5,000$\textrm{km}^2$. Also, dimensionless regression equation is derived by using characteristic values of unit hydrograph.

  • In this study, dual drainage system based runoff model was established for W-drainage area in G-si, and considering the various rainfall characteristics determined using Huff and Mononobe methods, the degree of flooding in the target area was analyzed and the risk was compared and analyzed through the risk matrix method. As a result, the Monobe method compared to the Huff method was analyzed to be suitable analysis for flooding of recent heavy rain, and the validity of the dynamic risk assessment considering the weight of the occurrence probability as the return period was verified through the risk matrix-based analysis. However, since the definition and estimating criteria of the flood risk matrix proposed in this study are based on the return period for extreme rainfall and the depth of flooding according to the results of applying the dual drainage model, there is a limitation in that it is difficult to consider the main factors which are direct impact on inland flooding such as city maintenance and life protection functions. In the future, if various factors affecting inland flood damage are reflected in addition to the amount of flood damage, the flood risk matrix concept proposed in this study can be used as basic information for preparation and prevention of inland flooding, as well as it is judged that it can be considered as a major evaluation item in the selection of the priority management area for sewage maintenance for countermeasures against inland flooding.

  • Information on radar rainfall with high spatio-temporal resolution over large areas has been used to mitigate climate-related disasters such as flash floods. On the other hand, a well-known problem associated with the radar rainfall using the Marshall-Palmer relationship is the underestimation. In this study, we develop a new bias correction scheme based on the quantile regression method. This study employed a bivariate copula function method for the joint simulation between radar and ground gauge rainfall data to better characterize the error distribution. The proposed quantile regression based bias corrected rainfall showed a good agreement with that of observed. Moreover, the results of our case studies suggest that the copula function approach was useful to functionalize the error distribution of radar rainfall in an effective way.

  • The goal of this study is to improve Huff's method which is the most popular method for rainfall time distribution in Korea. As the first step, we reevaluated the context of Huff's original research motivations, geography and rainfall pattern of study area, and compared that to Korean situations. In original Huff's results, no change in temporal distribution characteristics were found for different rainfall durations. This was found to be different from Korean situations. Furthermore, results from the MOCT(Ministry of Construction and Transportation) version of Huff's method is on a gage basis not on a watershed basis, thus making it difficult to select cumulative rainfall curves representative of a watershed. In addition, all rainfall data regardless of their magnitude were used in the MOCT version of Huff' method which is different from original Huff's which screened out data by using a threshold value of 25.4mm. For both point and areal mean rainfall, time distribution characteristics of rainfall for various durations were found to be different. This was statistically proven by K-S test at 5% significance level as some cumulative rainfall curves developed from the rainfall data of certain durations were found to be not significant with cumulative rainfall curves developed from the rainfall data of all durations. Therefore, in order to apply Huff's method to Korean situations, it is recommended that dimensionless cumulative curve must be developed for various rainfall duration intervals using rainfall data greater than a certain threshold value.

  • The increased frequency of meteorological disasters has been observed due to increased extreme events such as heavy rainfalls and flash floods. Numerous studies using high-resolution weather radar rainfall data have been carried out on the hydrological effects. In this study, a conditional merging technique is employed, which makes use of geostatistical methods to extract the optimal information from the observed data. In this context, three different techniques such as kriging, inverse distance weighting and spline interpolation methods are applied to conditionally merge radar and ground rainfall data. The results show that the estimated rainfall not only reproduce the spatial pattern of sub-hourly rainfall with a relatively small error, but also provide reliable temporal estimates of radar rainfall. The proposed modeling framework provides feasibility of using conditionally merged rainfall estimation at high spatio-temporal resolution in ungauged areas.

  • A soil moisture measuring method of hillslope for Korean watershed is developed to configure spatial-temporal distribution of soil moisture. Intensive surveying of topography had been performed to make a digital elevation model(DEM). Flow distribution algorithms were applied and a measurement system was established to maximize representative features of spatial variation. Soil moisture contribution mechanisms of rainfall-runoff process have been derived. Measurements were performed at the right side hillslope of Buprunsa located at the Sulmachun watershed. A Multiplex system has been operated and spatial-temporal soil moisture data have been acquired. Relatively high correlation relationship between flow distribution algorithm and measurement data can be found on the condition of high humidity.

  • Temporal distributions and characteristics of PWV (Precipitable Water Vapor) and LWP (Liquid Water Path) are investigated by using the microwave radiometric profiler at Haenam NCIO from 1 August 2007 to 31 July 2008. Temporal variations of PWV are closely connected with the thermal response of water vapor in atmosphere. The variations of LWP are characterized by the rainfall variation being basically attributable to the heavy rain-bearing clouds. The frequency distributions of PWV and LWP according to the four sky conditions ('clear', 'lightly cloudy', 'cloudy', and 'deeply cloudy') by total cloud amount at Wando Observatory corresponds with a change of slope in cumulative distribution function for PWV and LWP. There results implies that the classification of sky condition can be applied by using the distribution of PWV and LWP from microwave radiometric profiler.
