  • In The study, the bonding of WC-9%Co to SUJ2 steel using Ag-Cu-Zn-Cd insert metal has performed to investigate the bonding properties by heat-treatment. Bonding was brazed for 5-30min at 95$0^{\circ}C$, performed solution treatment for 5 min at 85$0^{\circ}C$ and sustained subsequently oil quenching. To investigate the effect of heat-treatment, tempering was executed at $600^{\circ}C$ for 30 min after oil quenching. Mechnical properties and chemical compositions on the brazed bonding interface were investigated by means of microstructural observation, 4-point bending test and EDS and XRD measurements. The results obtained were as follows. 1) The bonding strength of WC-9%Co/SUJ2 joints by Ag-Cu-Zn-Cd insert metal obtained about 78, 117 and 72MPa after brazing for 5, 20 and 30 min at 95$0^{\circ}C$. And the highest bonding strength obtained about 131MPa after brazing for10 min at 95$0^{\circ}C$ 2) Higher bonding strength of 288MPa was obtained in the joint that brazed for 10 min at 95$0^{\circ}C$, and carried out tempering for 30 min at $600^{\circ}C$ subsequently. 3) Fracture of joint brazed by Ag-Cu-Zn-Cd insert metal for 5, 10, 20 and 30 min created WC-9%Co/SUJ2 interface. The joint that brazed for 10 min at 95$0^{\circ}C$ and then tempered for 30 min at $600^{\circ}C$ was fractured at the site of WC-9%Co.

  • Characteristics of dissimilar metal welds between alloy steel ASTM A387 Gr. 91 and carbon steel ASTM A516 Gr.70 made with Flux cored arc welding(FCAW) have been evaluated in terms of microstructure, mechanical strength, chemical analysis by EDS as well as corrosion test. Three heat inputs of 15.0, 22.5, 30.0kJ/cm were employed to make joints of dissimilar metals with E71T-1C wire. Post-weld heat treatment was carried out at $750^{\circ}C$ for 2.5 h. Based on microstructural examination, Intragranular polygonal ferrite and grainboundary ferrite were formed only in first layer of weld metal. Another layers consisted of acicular ferrite and $Widmannst{\ddot{a}}tten$ ferrite. The amount of acicular ferrite was increased with decreasing heat input and layer. Heat affected zone of alloy steel showed the highest hardness due to the formation of tempered martensite and lower bainite. Lower and upper bainite were formed in heat affected zone of carbon steel. Tensile strengths of dissimilar metal welds decreased with increasing heat inputs. Dissimilar metal welds showed a good hot cracking resistance due to the low HCS index below 4. The salt spray test of dissimilar metals welds showed that the weight loss rate by corrosion below 170 hours was decreased with increasing heat inputs due to the increase of the amount of acicular ferrite.

  • The effect of nitrogen on the electrochemical corrosion and nanomechanical behaviors of martensitic stainless steel was examined using potentiodynamic polarization and nanoindentation test methods. The results indicate that partial replacement of carbon with nitrogen effectively improved the passivation and pitting corrosion resistance of conventional high-carbon and high- chromium martensitic steels. Post-test observation of the samples after a potentiodynamic test revealed a severe pitting attacks in conventional martensitic steel compared with nitrogen- containing martensitic stainless steel. This was shown to be due to (i) microstructural refinement results in retaining a high-chromium content in the matrix, and (ii) the presence of reversed austenite formed during the tempering process. Since nitrogen addition also resulted in the formation of a $Cr_2N$ phase as a process of secondary hardening, the hardness of the nitrogen- containing steel is slightly higher than the conventional martensitic stainless steel under tempered conditions, even though the carbon content is lowered. The added nitrogen also improved the wear resistance of the steel as the critical load (Lc2) is less, along with a lower scratch friction coefficient (SFC) when compared to conventional martensitic stainless steel such as AISI 440C.

  • High brittleness is a characteristic of glass, and in many cases it is broken during the process of machining due to processing problems, such as scratches, chipping, and notches. Machining defects occur due to the vibration of the equipment. Therefore, design techniques are needed that can control the vibration generated in the equipment to increase the strength of tempered glass. The natural frequency of the machine tool via vibration analysis (computer simulation) must be accurately understood to improve the design to ensure the stability of the machine. To accurately understand the natural frequency, 3D modeling, which is the same as actual apparatus, was used and a constraint condition was also applied that was the same as that of the actual apparatus. The maximum speeds of ultrasonic and high frequency, which are 15,000 rpm and 60,000 rpm, respectively, are considerably faster than those of typical machine tools. Therefore, an improved design is needed so that the natural frequency is formed at a lower region and the natural frequency does not increase through general design reinforcement. By restructuring the top frame of the glass processing, the natural frequency was not formed in the operating speed area with the improved design. The lower-order natural frequency is dominant for the effects that the natural frequency has on the vibration. Therefore, the design improvement in which the lower-order natural frequency is not formed in the operating speed area is an optimum design improvement. It is possible to effectively control the vibrations by avoiding resonance with simple design improvements.

  • The high-temperature isothermal aging is studied in ultra-supercritical steel, which is attractive to the next generation of power plants. The effects of microstructure on reversible permeability are discussed. Isothermal aging was observed to coarsen the tempered carbide ($Cr_{23}C_6$), generate the intermetallic ($Fe_2W$) phase and grow rapidly during aging. The dislocation density also decreases steeply within lath interior. The dynamic coercivity, measured from the peak position of the reversible permeability profile decreased drastically during the initial 500 h aging period, and was thereafter observed to decrease only slightly. The variation in dynamic coercivity is closely related to the decrease in the number of pinning sites, such as dislocations, fine precipitates and the martensite lath.

  • The effect of puffing conditions on the physical properties and sensory evaluations of a puffed snack (ppeongtuigi) made of purple sweet potato flour was investigated. The snacks consisted of coated artificial rice with purple sweet potato flour with water, tempered to 7%, 9% and 11% moisture. The coated material was puffed at 236, 241, or $246^{\circ}C$ for 4, 5, or 6 s. The $L^*$ value decreased as the heating time increased. The $a^*$ and $b^*$ values, specific volume, and hardness increased with increasing heating temperature and heating time. Puffed snacks produced under conditions of higher moisture (7%), higher heating temperature ($246^{\circ}C$), or longer heating time (5 s) showed high scores for appearance, color, taste, and overall acceptability in sensory evaluations.

  • This paper has comparatively analyzed the characteristics of the machined surface of a specimen made by machining Die Steel STD11 and a specimen obtained by W-EDM steel. If a press die is manufactured through W-EDM, products of shapes that cannot easily be made through machining can be manufactured easily. However, the life of the press die is significantly reduced compared with the press die made through machining. This is believed to be caused by the deformed layer that has occurred on the surface of the press die that was made through W-EDM. The roughness of the 2 specimens was measured, and it was learned that the distribution of the roughness of the specimen made through the 1st W-EDM was rough. When the specimens were observed using a scanning-electron microscope, there was significant difference between the surface and the cross-section of the 2 specimens, while the cross section of the specimen obtained through W-EDM had the tempered and quenched surface structure which exists in the form of a deformed layer.

  • The effects of heat treatments and alloying elements on the microstructure and mechanical charaterisitics of specially austempered ADIs containing alloying elements such as Cu, Mo and Ni were investigated. To compare with the effect of conventional and normal(CN) austempering treatment, two kinds of special austempering treatments which are those with pre-quenching and pre-heating were conducted. The hardness and uniaxial fatigue tests were carried out to evaluate the mechanical charateristics. The hardness of ADI treated by CN heat cycles was higher than those of other ADIs. Cu added ADI (Cu-ADI) tempered at 400 after austenitizing exhibited the highest fatigue life cycles. While austempering after prequenching makes the austenite with high carbon stable, which resulted in transformation to highly strengthened bainites from the carbon enriched austenite phases during tempering. The high carbon enriched banites is considered to improve the fatigue strength.

  • For the good combination of high-temperature strength, toughness and creep property, $9-12\%$ chromium steels are often used for gas turbine compressors, steam turbine rotors, blade and casing. In this study, the correlation of microstructural evolution and mechanical properties was investigated fur the specimens heat-treated at 600, 650 and $700^{\circ}C$ for 1000, 3000 and 5000 hrs. The microstructure of as-received specimen was tempered martensite with a high dislocation density, small sub-grains and fine secondary phase such as $M_23C_6$. Aging for long-time at high temperature caused the growth of martensite lath and the decrease of dislocation density resulting in the decrease in strength. However, the evolution of secondary phases had influence on hardness, yield strength and impact property. In the group A specimen aged at $600^{\circ}C\;and\;650^{\circ}C$, Laves phase was observed. The Laves phase caused the increase of the hardness and the decrease of the impact property. In addition, the abrupt growth of secondary phases caused decrease of the impact property in both A and B group specimens.
