  • Carbon Fiber Re-enforced Polymer (CFRP) has replaced steel, especially for mobile devices. As CFRP is stiff and light-weight, it has been applied to airplane, sport car, golf clubs, semiconductor transporter, satellites, etc. In the telescope, the plastic material was introduced to the supporting tubes or rods connecting the primary mirror assembly and the secondary mirror structure. Nowadays, even the mirror itself is produced by CFRP. In this poster, material properties and production of CFRP telescopes are presented, and pros and cons are discussed.

  • Rotation-powered pulsars are excellent laboratories for studying particle acceleration as well as fundamental physics of strong gravity, strong magnetic fields and relativity. Particle acceleration and high-energy emission from the polar caps is expected to occur in connection with electron-positron pair cascades. I will review acceleration and gamma-ray emission from the pulsar polar cap and associated slot gap. Predictions of these models can be tested with the data set on pulsars collected by the Large Area Telescope on the Fermi Gamma-Ray Telescope over the last four years, using both detailed light curve fitting, population synthesis and phase-resolved spectroscopy.

  • ASTRO-F is the first Japanese dedicated infrared astronomical satellite which will be launched in 2005FY and is now in the final stage of the development. ASTRO-F is a 70 cm aperture cryogenically cooled telescope and designed for the infrared survey with much higher sensitivity and angular resolution than IRAS. We present the current status of the mission, focal plane instruments, and the observation plan now being discussed.

  • We present the results of a 21cm radio continuum aperture synthesis mosaic of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), made by combining data from 1344 separate pointing centers using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the 64-m Parkes single-dish telescope. The resolution of the mosaicked images is 55' ( 10 pc, using a distance to the LMC) and a region $10^{\circ}{\times}12^{\circ}$ is surveyed.

  • Bridge displacement measurement system using image processing is developed to overcome the contact type system inefficiencies such as heavy, expensive property and temporary construction necessity. The system is composed of tablet PC with IEEE1394 digital camera, telescope lens and a designed target mark. The key is projection algorithm where all pixels are added up for each row(column) to find out the center line. The experimental results are shown compared with a contact type system.

  • The VLBI Space Observatory Program (VSOP) is a worldwide project of one radio telescope in space with many ground radio telescopes. The concerted space VLBI network enables us to reveal high resolution and high quality images of radio sources. The space radio telescope is anticipated to be launched in January/February 1997, and collaborative observations have been coordinated. The basic parameters of the system and present status are given.

  • A major goal of the proposed Korean Neutrino Detector and Telescope is to detect neutrino burst from core-collapse supernova (SN) explosions in the Milky Way, which will provide an unprecedented opportunity to look into the core of an exploding massive star. Detection with high statistics would give important information for the explosion physics. It can also detect neutrino signals from SN events in the Local Group and trigger alert of the event for the astronomical community. In this talk, I will review the SN rates of the Milky Way and the Local Group, and will discuss the implications for the proposed neutrino telescope.

  • The Giant Magellan Telescope Integral-Field Spectrograph (GMTIFS) is a near-infrared imager and integral-field spectrograph, which will be the workhorse adaptive-optics (AO) instrument on the GMT when AO operations begin. We will describe the current design and proposed capabilities of the GMTIFS. We will also present a brief overview of GMTIFS science cases that include first-light objects, galaxy feedback and assembly, the nature of compact massive objects as well as the formation and evolution of stars and planets.
