  • An isolate of Rhizoctonia solani AG 2-2(IV) from zoysiagrass was examined on development of its teleomorph by the modified soil-on-agar culture method. The most effective growth medium for sporulation was Czapek's 1/2 agar medium added with yeast extract and peptone. The characters of teleomorph of R. solani AG 2-2 (IV) are as follows. Hymenia developed on soil surface after the development of vegetative hyphae. Basidia were barrel-shaped, short clavate or obovate and were 11.4~17.9$\times$7.1~11.4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ (mean : 15.1$\times$9.0 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) in size. Sterigmata were horn-shaped and slightly bent to the inner side and 4.3~18.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ (mean : 10.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) in size. Two to four sterigmata developed on each basidium. Basidiospores were obovate, ellipsoid to oblong-ellipsoid, hyaline, smooth, thin walled, with an apiculus, and 3.6~10.4$\times$2.9~5.7 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ (mean : 7.8$\times$4.4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) in size.

  • Anamorph and teleomorph of Diatrype stigma on the bed-log inoculated with oak-mushroom (Lentinula edodes) in Korea were observed and identified. As the characters of anamorph of Diatrype stigma, conidia were hyaline, falcate or slightly curve, and $1{\sim}1.5{\times}12.5{\sim}17.5\;{\mu}m$, and conidia layer was confirmed under the bark. About teleomorph, perithecia $150{\sim}200{\times}450{\sim}500\;{\mu}m$, with ostiole ($30{\sim}40\;{\mu}m$, three- to four-sulcate). Size of ascus containing 8 ascospores was $5{\sim}6{\times}30{\sim}40\;{\mu}m$. Ascospores were hyaline to pale brown, $1.5{\sim}2{\times}5{\sim}7.5\;{\mu}m$ and mostly biguttulate.

  • A Cordyceps species was found with a Beauveria anamorph state on larval insect cadavers on Obong mountains in Gangwon Provinces, Republic of Korea. Cultures from discharged ascospores formed an anamorph identifiable as Beauveria bassiana. This teleomorph-anamorph connection was also confirmed by the in vitro production of fertile ascomata from conidial cultures with morphology like that of field-collected specimen. This is the first report of in vitro production of a teleomorph for any Beauveria species. The Cordyceps species has been conspecified as Cordyceps bassiana, a species described from China with B. bassiana anamorph.

  • A fungus Pyrenophora tritici-repentis induces tan spot of wheat which is a foliar disease that causes yield loss to wheat crops worldwide. In this study, a new, simple and non-costly technique was performed to produce the sexual stage of this fungus in culture, within 9 weeks using wheat straw. This protocol will be helpful to researchers studying the biology of sexual stage development, disease epidemiology and genetics of this fungus.

  • Studies were conducted to investigate the changes of teleomorph of Diatrype stigma on bed-log of shiitake (Lentinula edodes) and appearance of secondary harmful fungi from December 1999 to August 2001. The color of stroma was changed from red brown to dark brown after 12 months. The size of ostioles became smaller and the number of ostioles decreased as time passed. Most of the ostioles disappeared after 20 months from toleomorph formation. Perithecia and ascospores were gradually disappeared, and perithecia containing ascospores were observed at 10% of bed-logs tested after 20 months. Concerning the secondary harmful fungi infecting the bedlog of shiitake after teleomorph of D. stigma, Hypoxylon truncatum (Anamorph : Nodulisporium sp.), Schizophyllum commune and Trichoderma spp. were observed on stroma of D. stigma. Penicillium sp. occurred on spore-horn of Libertella sp. (Anamorph of D. stigma). Besides, Hypoxylon howeianum and some species of Myxomycetes were observed. Also, Libertella sp. appeared again at some bed-logs.

  • The presence of Pleochaeta shiraiana associated with powdery mildew of Celtis sinensis in Korea is dubious, mainly due to incomplete records of earlier workers. To confirm the occurrence of the powdery mildew and the identity of the causal fungus, morphological characteristics of the anamorph and teleomorph from nine samples deposited in KUS (Herbarium in Korea University) were examined by light microscopy. Identification of the fungus was supported by comparing four ITS sequences from Korean samples with two Japanese data. This is the first confirmed report of the powdery mildew associated with P. shiraiana in Korea.

  • This report describes a case of pinnal fungal dermatitis caused by Arthroderma vanbreuseghemii in a Rex rabbit diagnosed by clinical signs, macro- and microscopic examination, molecular and phylogenetic analyses. This is the first description of natural A. vanbreuseghemii infection in rabbits in South Korea.

  • Anthracnose of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) was found in the peanut cultivating fields in Iksan, Korea in September 1997. Infected plants showed irregularly circular water soaking brown lesions. In the severe case, leaves and stems were entirely died. The causal fungus of anthracnose isolated from the diseased plants was identified as Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Penz. and its teleomorph was Glomerella cingulata (Stonem.) Spauld. & Sch. according to the criteria based on the cultural and morphological characteristics. By arificial inoculation with fungal spores on healthy peanut, anthracnose symptom was observed 15 days after inoculation.
