A Study on Workload of Using Telematics while Driving (주행 중 Navigation 사용에 의한 운전부하에 관한 연구)

  • New equipment that is useful for driving is developing every day. Navigation is one of the most popular equipment among them. Telematics market including navigation is getting bigger and bigger. However, traffic accident from using telematics equipment is also increasing. Drivers may lose glance using navigation, and driver's workload will also grow by driver's distraction. This thesis is base on the study about the influence on the drivers' workload by using the telematics equipment. Previous study of drivers' workload used psychological method and behavior test method, but it was less connection with telematics equipment. The main object of this thesis is measuring the workload according to the telematics usage by HMI (Human Machine Interface) in the virtual reality. Therefore, we developed GPS simulator, and made an experiment of whether using the navigation or not on the highway and an experiment of the location of navigation in downtown. The result of these experiments is that workload when driver used navigation was higher than when driver didn't use navigation. In addition, workload was different according to the location, and HUD (Head-Up Display) was especially higher than other locations but also its information delivery ability was the best.

  • Telematics is expected to be one of the fastest growing businesses in information technology area. It may create a new emerging market in industry related to automotive, telecommunications, and information services. Especially vehicle navigation service is considered as a killer application among telematics service applications. The current vehicle navigation service typically recommends a single path that is based on the traveling time or distance from the origin to the destination. The system provides two options for users to choose either via highway or via any road. Since the traffics and road conditions of big cities are very complicated and dynamic, the demand of multi-path guidance system is increasing in telematics market. The multi-path guidance system should allow drivers to choose a path based on their individual preferences such as traveling time, distance, or route familiarity. Using the Lawler's algorithm, it is possible to find multiple paths; however, due to the lengthy computational time, it is not suitable for the real-time services. This study suggests a computationally feasible and efficient heuristic multiple paths finding algorithm that is reliable for the real-time vehicle navigation services.

  • In this paper, a telematics service platform, which supports the management and diagnosis of automobile and controls the automobile's convenience equipment is designed and implemented. Using the service platform, telematics software can be developed independent of the lower part of automobiles's network devices, each hardware devices, and wireless network devices. The platform classifies each device's service and provides it with the fixed form of API(Application Programming Interface). This API consists of the wireless connection for a mobile device, the CAN network for controlling an automobile, the receiving part of GPS data for location base service, and the message parser for different data formats of different network.

  • In this paper, a POI(Point-of-Interest) telematics service platform, in which detailed POI telematics services are discovered automatically and provided, is developed. The platform discovers services with UPnP middleware and provides a location-based service using GIS information. It is implemented by a telematics server, terminals, and service gateways and tested by applying test scenario for validation. Also, the response time and throughput of UPnP messages in the platform is measured and analyzed. The result shows that it has little impact on the service network congestion.

  • This paper presents a method of constructing telematics terminal embedded architecture for DMB TPEG data service The proposed embedded architecture was designed for terminal. Also, we use WIPI which was used for standard based on mobile middle-ware, and TPEG decoding which was used for Window CE. We can see the advantage compare with previous methods.

  • A novel idea is presented to locate intersections in a video sequence captured from a moving vehicle. More specifically, we propose a Bayesian network approach to combine evidence extracted from a video sequence and evidence from a database, maximizing evidence from various sensors in a systematic manner and locating intersections robustly.
