  • CD4+CD25+regulatory T cells (Tregs) play a key role in regulation of immnue response and maintenance of self-tolerance. Studies have found Tregs could suppress tumor-specific T cell-mediated immune response and promote cancer progression. Depletion of Tregs can enhance antitumor immunity. Dendritic cells (DCs) are professional antigen-presenting cells and capable of activating antigen-specific immune responses, which make them ideal candidate for cancer immunotherapy. Now various DC vaccines are considered as effective treatment for cancers. The aim of this study was to evaluate variation of Tregs in BALB/C mice with hepatocellular carcinoma and investigate the interaction between tumor-derived Tregs, effector T cells (Teff) and splenic DCs. We found the percentages of Tregs/CD4+ in the peripheral blood of tumor-bearing mice were higher than in normal mice. Tumor-derived Tregs diminished the up-regulation of costimulatory molecule expression on splenic DCs, even in the presence of Teff cells and simultaneously inhibited IL-12 and $TNF-{\alpha}$ secretion by DCs.

  • We present a machine learning approach to estimating stellar atmospheric parameters, effective temperature (Teff), surface gravity (log g), and metallicity ([Fe/H]) for stars observed during the course of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). For training a neural network, we randomly sampled the SDSS data with stellar parameters available from SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline (SSPP) to cover the parameter space as wide as possible. We selected stars that are not included in the training sample as validation sample to determine the accuracy and precision of each parameter. We also divided the training and validation samples into four groups that cover signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 10-20, 20-30, 30-50, and over 50 to assess the effect of S/N on the parameter estimation. We find from the comparison of the network-driven parameters with the SSPP ones the range of the uncertainties of 73~123 K in Teff, 0.18~0.42 dex in log g, and 0.12~0.25 dex in [Fe/H], respectively, depending on the S/N range adopted. We conclude that these precisions are high enough to study the chemical and kinematic properties of the Galactic disk and halo stars, and we will attempt to apply this technique to Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST), which plans to obtain about 8 million stellar spectra, in order to estimate stellar parameters.

  • The presence of high fluoride concentration (> 1.5 mg/L) in water causes serious health problems such as fluorosis, infertility, brain damage, etc., which are endemic to many places in the world. This study has investigated the fluoride removal capacity of the novel activated biochar (BTS) and hydrochar (HTS) using Teff (Eragrostis tef) straw as a precursor. Activated biochar with mesoporous structures and large specific surface area of 627.7 ㎡/g were prepared via pyrolysis process. Low-cost carbonaceous hydrochar were also synthesized by an acid assisted hydrothermal carbonization process. Results obtained from both adsorbents show that the best local maximum fluoride removal was achieved at pH 2, contact time 120 min and agitation speed 200 rpm. The thermodynamic studies proved that the adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. Both adsorbents equilibrium data fitted to Langmuir isotherm. However, Freundlich isotherm fitted best for BTS. The maximum fluoride loading capacity of BTS and HTS was found to be 212 and 88.7 mg/g, respectively. The variation could primarily be attributed to a relatively larger Surface area for BTS. Hence, to treat fluoride contaminated water, BTS can be promising as an effective adsorbent.

  • Spectroscopic CCD observations were carried out for V 1119 Cygni and the spectrum inthe visual region is analysed relative to the SLln with a line-blanketed convective modelatmosphere. Adopted atmospheric parameters are : an effective temperature ( Teff) =7000 K, a surface gravity log g = 3.4. Although our result is dependent onmicroturbulent velocity and damping constant, it was found that Mg in V1719 Cygni isnearly solar, or underabundant by 0.2 to 0.3 dex according to the analysis of5172.684A Mg I line which is relatively free from blending. This is inconsistentwith the previous photometric result wh(:re V1719 Cygni was known as anabnormally metal rich variable.

  • To understand about Gould Belt, we intend to study chemical abundances for two young open clusters - IC 2391 which is a member of Gould Belt and NGC 6475 which is not. UVES POP (Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph Paranal Observatory Project) provides the spectra of twelve stars in IC 2391 and five stars in NGC 6475 with spectral resolution R of 80,000. In this study, we have determined the stellar parameters (Teff, logg, metallicity, and microturbulant velocity) using Fe I and Fe II lines. The equivalent widths of iron lines have been measured by TAME. The results of stellar parameters are presented.

  • We introduce a coordinate catalog for photometry of the KMTNet Galactic bulge observation program and how to find the microlensing event candidates in the photometry result. Basically, the KMTNet bulge program is monitoring a total of 27 target fields (108 deg2) with four different cadences of 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, and 5.0 hours. In order to measure the stellar flux of each target, we made a 'observation coordinate catalog' by using the 'OGLE-III catalog' and 'DoPhot package'. The catalog contains approximately 0.3 billion stars in the bulge fields. We also search for a microlensing event candidates by means of the 'Event Finder algorithm' which calculates the restricted single-lens fitting (t0, teff, u0; u0 = 0 or 1) model. As a result, we found more than 2,000 microlensing event candidates per each year including about 700 events from the other survey groups such as OGLE and MOA. In this year, we will improve our current pipeline system, e.g. upgrading the catalog and applying real-time photometry.
