We investigate the decaying incompressible MHD turbulence by including the effect of the expansion and contraction of background medium. In such an environment, incompressible MHD turbulence has two kinds of time scale. One is the eddy turn-over time (teddy), the other is the expansion/contraction time (texp-cntr). The turbulence is expected to behave differently according to the relationship between the two time scales. For instance, for teddy < texp-cntr, the turbulence would be decay more or less as in a static medium. On the other hand, for teddy > texp-cntr, the effects of expansion and contraction would be dominant. We examine the properties of turbulence in these two regime cases. Based on it, we derive a scaling for the time evolution of flow velocity and magnetic field. (i) In the decay effect dominant case, the velocity and magnetic field scale as $\sqrt{{\rho}v}{\sim}a^{-3}$, $b{\sim}a^{-2.5}$(expanding media) and $\sqrt{{\rho}v}{\sim}a^{-2}$, $b{\sim}a^{-1.5}$(contracting media). The total energy and residual spectra follow the $E^T_k{\sim}k^{-5/3}$, $E^R_k{\sim}k^{-7.3}$ in the inertial range. (ii) In the expanding and contracting dominant case, the velocity and magnetic field scale as $\sqrt{{\rho}v}{\sim}a^{-2.5}$, $b{\sim}a^{-2}$ (expanding/contracting media). The Kinetic and magnetic energy spectra follow the $E^K_k{\sim}a^{-5}$, $E^M_k{\sim}a^{-4}$. We have confirmed that scaling of velocity and magnetic filed is almost the same from the analytic estimates and computational models

The paper presents a numerical approach to study of fluid flow characteristics and to predict performance of wind turbines. The numerical model is based on Finite-volume method (FVM) discretization of unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations. The movement of turbine blades is modeled using moving mesh technique. The turbulence is modeled using commonly used turbulence models: Renormalization Group (RNG) k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ and k-${\omega}$ turbulence models. The model is validated with the experimental data over a large range of tip-speed to wind ratio (TSR) and blade pitch angles. In order to demonstrate the use of numerical method as a tool for designing wind turbines, two dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) simulations are carried out to study the flow through a small scale Darrieus type H-rotor Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT). The flows predictions are used to determine the performance of the turbine. The turbine consists of 3-symmetrical NACA0022 blades. A number of simulations are performed for a range of approaching angles and wind speeds. This numerical study highlights the concerns with the self-starting capabilities of the present VAWT turbine. However results also indicate that self-starting capabilities of the turbine can be increased when the mounted angle of attack of the blades is increased. The 2-D simulations using the presented model can successfully be used at preliminary stage of turbine design to compare performance of the turbine for different design and operating parameters, whereas 3-D studies are preferred for the final design.
We analyze the number of phase screens required for the simulation of a high-energy laser beam's propagation over an atmospheric channel. For high-energy lasers exceeding tens of kilowatts (kW) in power, the laser beam is mainly affected by atmospheric turbulence and thermal blooming. When using the split-step method to implement losses due to atmospheric absorption and scattering and distortion of the beam due to turbulence and thermal blooming, the number of phase screens is a critical factor in determining the accuracy and time required for the simulation. By comparing simulation results obtained using a large number of phase screens (e.g., 150 screens) under a wide range of atmospheric turbulence conditions, we provide new guidelines for the number of phase screens required for simulating the beam propagation of a high-power laser below 2.5×106 W/m2 (e.g., a 500-kW laser beam having a 50-cm diameter).

To investigate a relation between fine scale eddies and particle dispersion in a near-wall turbulence, direct numerical simulations of turbulent channel flow laden particle are performed for $Re_{\tau}$=180. The motions of 0,8 million particles are calculated for several particle response times ($t_p$) which is the particle response time based on stokes’ friction law. The number density of particles has a tendency to increase with approaching the near-wall regions ($y^+$<20) except for cases of very small and large particle response times (i.e. $t_p$=0.02 and 15). Near the wall, the behavior and distribution of particles are deeply associated with the fine scale eddies, and are dependent on particle response times and a distance from the wall. The Stokes number that causes preferential distribution in turbulence is changed by a distance from the wall. The influential Stokes number based on the Burgers' vortex model is derived by using the time scale of the fine scale eddies. The influential Stokes number is also dependent on a distance from the wall and shows large value in the buffer layer.
In this paper, detailed wind field data of the full path of typhoon "Bailu" were obtained based on site measurements. Typhoon "Bailu" made first landfall southeast of the Taiwan Strait with a wind speed of approximately 30 m/s near the center of the typhoon eye and a second landfall in Dongshang County in Fujian Province. The moving process is classified into 3 regions for analysis and comparison. Detailed analyses of wind characteristics including wind profile, turbulence intensity, gust factor, turbulence integral scale and wind power spectral density function at the full process of the typhoon are conducted, and the findings are presented in this paper. Wind speed shows significant dependence on both the direction of the moving path and the distance between the typhoon center and measurement site. Wind characteristics significantly vary with the moving path of the typhoon center. The relationship between turbulence intensity and gust factor at different regions is investigated. The integral turbulence scales and wind speed are fitted by a Gaussian model. Such analysis and conclusions may provide guidance for future bridge wind-resistant design in engineering applications.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of slits and swirl vanes on the turbulence augmentation in the flow fields of a gun-type gas burner using an X-type hot-wire probe. The gun-type gas burner adopted in this study is composed of eight slits and swirl vanes located on the surface of an inclined baffle plate. Experiment was carried out at a flow rate of 450 ι/min in burner model installed in the test section of subsonic wind tunnel. Swirl vanes playa role diffusing main flow more remarkably toward the radial direction than axial one, but slits show a reverse feature. Consequently, both slits and swirl vanes remarkably increase turbulence intensity in the whole range of a gun-type gas burner with a cone-type baffle plate.

A diffuser an important equipment to change kinetic energy into pressure energy has been studied for a long time. Though experimental and theoretical researches habe been done the understanding of energy transfer and detailed mechanism of energy dissipation is unclear. As far as numerical prediction of diffuser flows are concerned various numerical studies have also been done. On the contrary many turbulence models have constraint to the applicability of diffuser-like flows with expansion and streamline curvature. In order to obtain the reliability of k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model modified combination turbulence models composed of the anisotropic k-$\varepsilon$model modified combination turbulence models composed of the anisotropic k-$\varepsilon$ model with Hanjalic-Launder's preferential normal strain and Pope's vortex stretching mechanism are proposed. The results of the present proposed models prove the fact that the coefficient of pressure and the shear stress are well predicted at the diffuser flow.
In Part I, we extended the capability of the Goore Scheme for application to multi-dimensional problems and improved convergence performance. In this paper, we apply the improved Goore Scheme to th e control of turbulence for drag reduction. Direct numerical simulations combined with the control scheme are carried out to simulate a controlled turbulent channel flow at low Reynolds number. The wall blowing and suction is applied through the Goore algorithm using the total drag as feedback. An optimum distribution of the wall blowing and suction in terms of the wall-shear stresses in the spanwise and streamwise directions is sought. The best case reduces drag by more than 20 %.
We investigate the possibility of application of the Goore Scheme to turbulence control for drag reduction. In Part I, we examine the performance of the original Goore Scheme by applying it to a si mple one-dimensional problem. For the application of the scheme to turbulence control, we extend the scheme's capability so that it can treat multi-dimensional problems and examine its validity theoretically. The convergence of the extended scheme with a dynamic memory is faster by an order of magnitude than the original scheme. In Part II, we apply the proposed scheme to reduce drag for turbulent channel flows through direct numerical simulation.

The objective of the present study is to perform experiments for water filled cavity heated and cooled from the side at $Ra=8.5{\times}108$. This experiment can provide validation database of the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model for single-phase turbulent natural convection which has been regarded as one of the important phenomena in nuclear safety. For the natural convection inside a cavity, temperature and velocity were obtained by thermometry and PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) methods. These results would be used for validation of standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model.
