  • KIPRIS patent database was analyzed for identifying the technological status of Daedeok Innopolis Biocluster. It was found that the pattern of activities among various technological areas in Daedeok Biocluster is similar to that of an advanced country rather than those of other cities in Korea. The technological growth in Daedeok Innopolis Biocluster is in the progressive stage, which may be due to the innovative activities rather than the rise in the number of new firms or institutes. The concentration of technology in Daedeok Innopolis Biocluster is a favorable condition for the innovation activities. The trend for the technological concentration was remarkably consistent with the growth curve that a population increases according to the logistic equation. The logistic growth may be represented by the result of competition due to the limited resource allocation and then innovation cluster is corresponding to the ecosystem composed by biological individuals. There is strong competition in Daedeok Innopolis Biocluster in around 2009, so the government might make a policy to encourage the technological diversity for healthy knowledge ecosystem.

  • The research empirically analyzes the impact of technological regime of game engine upon game development performance. The results indicate that, first, technological regime of game engine determines game's genre distribution. Secondly, user friendly game engine regime(modular, generic and integrated API engine) induces higher genre diversity and lower genre concentration ratios. Thirdly, user friendly game engine regime(modular, generic and integrated API engine) is becoming more applied recently. Fourthly, innovation types and price types of game engine do not influence upon game engine trades. Those results point out that game engine's technological regime influences directly game development application and user friendly regime is increasingly more standardized.

  • Human resource theories of becoming entrepreneurs or self-employed rather than finding employment are compared as applied to fit the occupational data of technological entrepreneurs and technology jobs. The human capital theory posits that technological entrepreneurs are prepared to become a jack-of-all-trades with a variety of fields of education. Hobo theory of entrepreneurship assumes that entrepreneurs have strong taste against concentrating on a few activities, which tend to drive entrepreneurs away from employed jobs depressing their expected income. Another theory assumes that entrepreneurs have some unobserved productive qualities and abilities over employed people. Immigrant entrepreneurs could presumably be pressured out of employment under racial discrimination. Since technology jobs are mostly filled by those educated in the science and technology fields, and they presumably offer great reward to professional concentration, technological entrepreneurs may not benefit from becoming jacks-of-all-trades compared to finding employment in technological jobs income-wise. Asian immigrants in the 2000 US Census data are compared to white immigrants in technological jobs to test alternative human resource theories of entrepreneurship. Using English language ability as a proxy for the variety of education, I find in the white immigrant technological entrepreneurs support for the jack-of-all-trades theory, while in the Asian immigrant technological entrepreneurs hobo theory is supported. In the Asian technological workers only there appears the significant self-selection or comparative advantage component, while at the same time discriminatory components are significant.

  • Purpose - This study investigates the relationship between corporate ownership structure and technological innovation for Chinese listed firms. Specifically, we analyze four ownership characteristics: concentration, constraints, alignment, and foreign/domestic institutional investor ownership, and use patent applications to measure innovation. Design/methodology/approach - Employing a quantitative research design, this study uses panel data of Chinese listed companies during the period from 2015 to 2021. The empirical analysis relies on multiple regression models, including Tobit models and two-stage least squares estimation, to assess the relationship between corporate ownership structure characteristics and innovation. Robustness checks are conducted using lagged dependent variables and subgroup analyses based on firm age, ownership type, and stock exchange listing. Findings - First, it provides empirical evidence on the non-linear relationship between ownership concentration and innovation, suggesting that there is an optimal level of ownership concentration for promoting innovation. Second, it highlights the importance of equity constraints in influencing innovation, showing that both excessive and insufficient equity constraints can hinder innovation. Third, the study demonstrates the negative impact of aligned ownership and control on innovation, suggesting that separation of ownership and control may be beneficial for fostering innovation. Fourth, it sheds light on the differential impact of domestic and foreign institutional investors on innovation, suggesting that foreign institutional investors may play a more positive role in promoting innovation. Research implications or Originality - The significance of this study's results lies in the fact that we empirically analyze the relationship between corporate ownership characteristics and technological innovation, thereby suggesting the direction of a desirable corporate governance structure that listed companies should pursue depending on their circumstances. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the ownership characteristics that influence technological innovation and provides valuable insights for policymakers and corporate managers.

  • The present paper computes the refractive indices of different corona viruses (H5N1, H5N2, H9N2, H4N6, FAdV and IBV) through reflectance analysis of a virus solution. The computational analysis indicates that the refractive indices of all viruses are negative at the signal of 412 nm. Further the numerical output shows that the infectious bronchitis viruses (family of novel corona viruses, COVID-19) have higher negative refractive indices as compared to other corona viruses. Finally refractive indices of the family of COVID-19 are investigated with respect to the EID (Electronic infusion Device) concentration of the viruses, showing that the refractive index which ranges from "-0.96725 to -0.999998" corresponds to '0.01 to 10000' EID virus concentration.

  • This study aimed at advanced oxidation of hetero tri-functional reactive dye Acid orange 7 using photo-Fenton conditions in a lab-scale experiment. Decolourisation of Acid Orange 7 dye by Fenton's process was dependent on concentration of Hydrogen peroxide, Ferrous sulphate, pH, and contact time. A $2^3$ factorial design was used to evaluate the effects of these key factors: pH, Fe(II), and $H_2O_2$ concentration, for a dye concentration of 50 mg/L with COD of 340 mg/L at pH 3.0. The response function was removal of colour under optimised conditions; pH 3.0, [Fe(II)] 40.83 mg/L, [$H_2O_2$] 4.97 mmol/L; 13.6 min. of treatment resulting in 100% colour removal. The final COD of treated wastewater was nil suggesting that AOP is a potentially useful process of color removal and dye degradation/mineralisation of effluent having AO7. Minimum contact time for complete decolourisation was at 5 mmol/l $H_2O_2$ concentration. Increase in $FeSO_4$ (mg/l) concentration resulted in decrease of time for complete decolourisation. Box-Behnken Design was used to optimize the process variables. Maximum and minimum levels of pH (3-5), $H_2O_2$ (4-6 mmol/l), $FeSO_4$ (30-46 mg/l) and contact time (5-15 minutes) were used. The statistical analysis revealed a value of 0.88 for coefficient of regression ($R^2$) indicating a good fit of model. Calculated F-value was found higher than the tabulated value confirming to significance of the model. Based on student's t-test, Ferrous sulphate, pH, and contact time have a positive effect on the percent decolourisation of Acid Orange 7.

  • Double-layer capacitors (DLCs) are developed with high surface electrodes to achieve a high capacitance value. In the present work, the initial bulk concentration of 1 mol/m3 and 3 mol /m3 are selected to show the consequential effects on the performance of a double-layer capacitor. A 1D model of COMSOL Multiphysics has been developed to analyze the electric field and potential in cell voltage, the electric displacement field and polarization induced by the field, and energy density in a double-layer structure. The electrostatics and the electric circuit modes in COMSOL are used to simulate the electrochemical processes in the double-layer structure. The analytical analysis of a double-layer capacitor with different initial bulk concentrations is investigated by using Poisson-Nernst-Plank equations. From the simulation results, the differential capacitance changes as a function of compact layer thickness and initial bulk concentration. The energy density varies with the differential capacitance and voltage window. The values of energy density are dominated by the interaction of ions in the solution and electrode surface.

  • We evaluated the antibiotic susceptibilities, hemolytic activities, and technological properties of 36 Staphylococcus xylosus strains and 49 S. pseudoxylosus strains predominantly isolated from fermented soybean foods from Korea. Most of the strains were sensitive to chloramphenicol, erythromycin, gentamycin, kanamycin, lincomycin, oxacillin, tetracycline, and trimethoprim. However, 23 strains exhibited potential phenotypic acquired resistance to erythromycin, lincomycin, and tetracycline. Based on breakpoint values for staphylococci from the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, >30% of the isolates were resistant to ampicillin and penicillin G, but the population distributions in minimum inhibitory concentration tests were clearly different from those expected for acquired resistance. None of the strains exhibited clear α- or β-hemolytic activity. S. xylosus and S. pseudoxylosus exhibited salt tolerance on agar medium containing 20% and 22% (w/v) NaCl, respectively. S. xylosus and S. pseudoxylosus strains possessed protease and lipase activities, which were affected by the NaCl concentration. Protease activity of S. pseudoxylosus was strain-specific, but lipase activity might be a characteristic of both species. This study confirms the potential of both species for use in high-salt soybean fermentation, but the safety and technological properties of strains must be determined to select suitable starter candidates.

  • In this paper, we tried to find the bottleneck factors of firms' innovative activities using the KIS (Korea Innovation Survey) 2002 data. Employing the method of factor analysis, we identified five bottleneck factors of innovative activities: organizational bottleneck factor, innovative bottleneck factor, economic bottleneck factor, supply-chain bottleneck factor, and market-environment bottleneck factor. Using regression analysis which includes the five bottleneck factors, industry characteristics variables (market concentration, technological opportunity, appropriability), and other control variables, we found (1) that all the five bottleneck factors are negatively related with innovative activities, (2) that technological opportunity and appropriability conditions are positively related with innovative activities, (3) that there is an inverted-U relationship between market concentration and innovative activities, and (4) that firm size has no significant influence on firms' innovative activities.

  • The rising pace of technological change in information and communications technology (ICT) has provoked technological convergence by providing a new mode of diversification. This paper investigates the nature of ICT-based converging technologies by examining comparative empirical evidence on converging versus nonconverging technologies in relation to the following issues: patent application trends, concentration across technologies, the concentration of patenting activity across firms, R&D efforts, and a technology impact index. For this study, a new operational definition of ICT-based converging technology is derived, and a massive quantity of patents, up to around 600,000, is analyzed. This study follows the International Patent Classification as well as the modified European Commission's industry classification system for the classification of technologies and industries, respectively.
