  • This paper explores the determinants of the economic value of patents using a survival time analysis. The analysis is based on renewal information of about 250,000 patents filed from 1984 to 2005 in the Korea Intellectual Property Office. A patent right is valid only when its owner pays yearly maintenance fees. Failure to pay causes patent rights to be lapsed. We use the fact that more valued patents live longer and the lengths of their renewals can be closely related to their value. The value can be affected not only by its own technological aspects such as quality and breadth, but also by characteristics of its owners such as innovativeness and age. This paper presents patent-specific and firm-specific characteristics which influence patent value. The result of analysis implies that patent value depends on both the technological contents of the patent and general capabilities of a firm.

  • Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have been under development for a variety of power generation applications. Power system sizes considered range from small watt-size units (e.g., 50-W portable devices) to very large multi-megawatt systems (e.g., 500-MW base load power plants). Because of the reversibility of its operation, the SOFC has also been developed to operate under reverse or electrolysis mode for hydrogen production from steam (In this case, the cell is referred to as solid oxide electrolysis cell or SOEC.). Potential applications for the SOEC include on-site and large-scale hydrogen production. One critical requirement for practical uses of these systems is long-term performance stability under specified operating conditions. Intrinsic material properties and operating environments can have significant effects on cell performance stability, thus performance degradation rate. This paper discusses potential applications of the SOFC/SOEC, technological status and current research and development (R&D) direction, and certain aspects of long-term performance degradation in the operation of SOFCs/SOECs for power generation/hydrogen production.

  • Metacognition means "thinking about one's own thinking". There are generally two aspects of metacognition: i) Reflection - thinking about what we know; and ii) Self-regulation - managing how we go about learning. Developing metacognitive abilities is not simply about becoming reflective learners, but about acquiring specific learning strategies as well. There are several strategies that may be used by teachers to develop metacognitive skills amongst learners. As part of a Professional Development project secondary school mathematics teachers have been developing their knowledge and skills to teach for metacognition. In this paper we analyze two lessons presented by groups of teachers in the project and tease out similarities and differences between the lessons that afford or hinder the development of metacognitive skills of learners.

  • Present computing power and enhanced technology is progressing at a dramatic rate. These systems can unravel complex issues, assess and control processes, learn, and-in many cases-fully automate production. There is no doubt that technological advancement is improving many aspects of life, changing the landscape of virtually all industries and enhancing production beyond what was thought possible. However, the human is still a part of these systems. Consequently, as the advancement of systems transpires, the role of humans within those systems will unavoidably continue to adapt as well. Due to the human tendency for error, this technological advancement should compel a persistent emphasis on human error reduction as part of maximizing system efficiency and safety-especially in the context of the nuclear industry. Within this context, as new systems are designed and the role of the human is transformed, human error should be targeted for a significant decrease relative to predecessor systems and an equivalent increase in system stability and safety. This article contends that optimizing the roles of humans and machines in the design and implementation of new types of automation in nuclear facility systems should involve human error reduction without ignoring the essential importance of human interaction within those systems.

  • The study of whole patterns of changes in protein expression and their modifications, or proteomics, presents both technological advances as well as formidable challenges to biological researchers. Nutrition research and the food sciences in general will be strongly influenced by the new knowledge generated by the proteomics approach. This review examines the different aspects of proteomics technologies, while emphasizing the value of consideration of "traditional" aspects of protein separation. These include the choice of the cell, the subcellular fraction, and the isolation and purification of the relevant protein fraction (if known) by protein chromatographic procedures. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of proteins and their peptides formed by proteolytic hydrolysis have been substantially enhanced by the development of mass spectrometry technologies in combination with nanoscale fluidics analysis. These are described, as are the pros and cons of each method in current use.

  • The study is devoted to the formation of a economic principles cargo delivery management in global supply chains. Mathematical model of delivering special categories of goods by road is a key element of these principles. The article analyzes the existing studies on solving the problem of cargo delivery in various aspects. It was noted that the greatest attention is paid to legal regulation, last mile delivery, optimization of routes and delivery schemes, information support, technological innovations, cluster routing, etc. In the developed mathematical model a minimum of total costs of forming loading units and freight shipments was defined as the criterion of optimality of organizing delivery by motor transport. The authors propose the creation of logistics clusters allowing the integration of urban transport flows and global supply chains.

  • In many urban cities, mixed-use development is becoming increasingly essential for the creation of an attractive and sustainable environment that promotes economic vitality, social equity and environmental quality. Due to the differences in scale, scope and intent, certain aspects within the project delivery process of mixed-use are not the same as "conventional" single-use projects. The objective of this paper is to highlight these aspects. Two cases in Southeast Asia serve to illustrate the uniqueness and challenges of mixed-use. In conclusion, the differences between mixed-use and single-use are evident in terms of the diversity of team members, the necessity of multiple market analyses, and a multi-layer (versus single-source) financing structure. Finally, issues concerning ownership tangles, land assembly, planning and application procedures, investment criteria of institutions have been identified as major pitfalls.

  • The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the relationships between market environments and technology strategy using the data gathered from Korean manufacturing firms. As the significant environmental factors influencing company's technology strategy, two sorts of market aspects are considered; market competition factor and technological dynamics factor. And companies are categorized with respect to the characteristics of market environments they are facing with. Then we seek to find the differences in the contents of technology strategy among the companies in different types of environments through statistical analysis. As a result, it is found that there exist significant relationships between the companies' technology strategy and the environments facing firms.
