  • We investigated the effects of molting-hormone insecticide tebufenozide on fourth larvae of the midge C. flaviplumuon in growth development from fourth-instar to adult. Fourth-instar larvae were exposed test concentrations were chosen control, 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$$L^{-1}$, 30 $\mu\textrm{g}$$L^{-1}$, 60 $\mu\textrm{g}$$L^{-1}$ and 100$\mu\textrm{g}$$L^{-1}$. In control and 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$$L^{-1}$, 10~20% individuals succeed adults while low emergence rates were observed surplus 30 $\mu\textrm{g}$$L^{-1}$. Death larvae appeared a various day along the concentration. We observed the converged day: control, 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$$L^{-1}$, 30 $\mu\textrm{g}$$L^{-1}$ and 60~100 $\mu\textrm{g}$$L^{-1}$ were day 4 to day 18, day 13 to day 16, day 9 to day 17 and day 9 to day 15, respectively. Therefore we concerned a tendency that exposure concentration was high, death period was short. Also, due to molting hormone disruption, development of midge was postponed relatively low concentration such as 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$$L^{-1}$. The converged days of pupa stage revealed control, 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$$L^{-1}$, 30 $\mu\textrm{g}$$L^{-1}$ and 60~100$\mu\textrm{g}$$L^{-1}$ were day 11~15, day 16~20, day 9~15 and day 5~9, respectively. About 10% individuals grow up the pupa-stage in 60~100 $\mu\textrm{g}$$L^{-1}$ condition. Sex ratio of the emerged adults was not different in this study. Death pupae frequently appeared in day 13~16 in control, day 6~23 in 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$$L^{-1}$, day 13~16 in 30 $\mu\textrm{g}$$L^{-1}$ and day 6~16 in 60~100 $\mu\textrm{g}$$L^{-1}$.

  • For the development of friendly environmental control of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua that is too hard to control in the field, 25 insecticides were chosen from 58 registered to the beet armyworm, and bioassayed. There are 12 insecticides with neurotoxical activities, 10 with insect growth regulators and 3 Bacillus thuringiensis products. Among 12 insecticides with neurotoxical activities, mortality of S. exigua was 100% with emamectin benzoate (EC) and indoxacarb (WP) within 3 and 5 days after application, respectively. Otherwise, WG and SC of indoxacarb, Indoxacarb + etofenprox (WP) and pyridalyl (EW) were showed up to 91 %. Methoxyfenozide + spinosad (SC) was better than any other insect growth regulator as 100% mortality within 3 days after application. And methoxyfenozide (WP), tebufenozide (WP) and methoxyfenozide (SC) were 92% by 5 days. However, 3 kinds of B. thuringiensis products were showed under 35% mortality within 5 days from first spray.

  • Popillia quqdriguttata is a serious insect pest in Korean golf courses. The adult feeds on leaves of latifoliate trees and herbaceous plants while the larva feeds on roots of turfgrass. Thus, control of p. quadriguttata adults was tried with registered insecticides in golf courses in Korea. The insecticides used in the experiments were carbaryl + phosalone WP, chlorpyrifos + diflubenzuron WP, chlorpyrifos-methyl EC, deltamethrin EC, etofenprox WP, etofenprox + diazinon WP, etofenprox + tebufenozide EC, fenitrothion EC, imidacloprid SC, pyraclofos WP, and tralomethrin EC. Mortalities of P. quadriguttata were over 95% in carbaryl + phosalone WP, chlorpyrifos + diflubenzuron WP, etofenprox + diazinon WP, and fenitrothion EC at petri dish and in greenhouse. In the field test, corrected mortality of P. quadriguttata was 95.2% and 80.9% in carbaryl 40% +phosalone 20% WP and fenitrothion 50% EC, respectively. Spreading agent enhanced toxic effect of used insecticides to p. quadriguttata adults except carbaryl + phosalon 20% EC. p. quadriguttata adult was firstly observed to feed on leaves of Canna generalis at the Yongwon golf club in Jinhae, Gyeongnam and Prunus ameriaca var. ansu and p. salicina at the Anyang Honest golf club in Gunpo, Cyeonggi. Therefure, host plants off quadriguftata became 29 species of 26 genera in 19 families. Zoysia matreila at the fairway and roughs of Anyang Benest golf club was damaged by p. quadriguttata larvae in Octomber, 2002 and not recovered in April, 2003. Damaged turfgrass became yellowish and wilted and that retarded recovering in the following spring.

  • This paper presents the occurrence and damage characteristics of the rice leaf-folder populations in the paddy fields of Dangsu-dong, Suwon from 2004 to 2007, and also reports the insecticide response of rice leaf-folder populations, which were collected from 2005 to 2006 in Korea and Vietnam. Laboratory measurements of the head capsule width and body length data enabled the identification of the rice leaf-folder larva stages collected in the field. The rice leaf-folder population in Suwon from 2004 to 2007 has a clear pattern consisting of two different group: the low and high density years. During the low density years (2004 and 2006), only one adult peak was noted in late August, with the damaged-hill percent less than 10% in late July, and the damaged-leaf percent around 2% in September. In contrast, during the high density years (2005 and 2007), two adult peaks were noted in early August and mid-September, with the damaged-hill percent was around 30% in late July, and the damaged-leaf percent 15 to 30% in September, which was beyond the economic injury level of rice leaf-folder. High correlations existed between the occurrence of rice leaf-folder in late July and early August and damages to rice during September. Based on these results, we suggest that the information on the rice leaf-folder population monitored by the adult density or damaged-hill percent in late July and early August would be very useful for predicting the damages later in the season for aiding in decision-making for timely control. In addition, the regional populations of rice leaf-folder showed the similar responses to the insecticides tested: high susceptibility to IGRs (tebufenozide and methoxyfenozide) and organophosphates (chlorpyrifos-methyl, pyridaphenthion), but relatively low to cartap.

  • This survey was performed to elucidate whether pesticide can cause the non-spinning syndrome of silkworm, Bombyx mori in Yecheon and Sangju 2002. We primarily focused to Insect Growth Regulator Pesticides(IGR) used in that areas. In the result of the survey to the retail pesticide store at Yecheon and Sangju, seven pesticides of the total 12 IGR pesticides sold were used during spring sericuitural season. 7 pesticides might effect on silkworm in consideration of possibility of exposure according to the characteristics of used amount, spray drift, volatility and treatment time. Five chitin synthesis inhibitor involving diflubenzuron of 7 IGR pesticides were known as very toxic to silkwork after exposure by skin and feeding but no non-spinning syndrome was observed from several papers. Methoxyfenozide and tebufenozide also has used at sericultural season, but are ecdysone agonist. One of the most feasible suspect of non IGR pesticide, was molinate in consideration of its volatility property and wide spread use in the sericultural area. But it's symptom after exposure of molinate was not the same as the non-spinning syndrome broke out at the sericultural farm in Yecheon and Sangju.

  • The comparative toxicity of ten acaricides, seven insecticides and five fungicides to the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae and its predators, Amblyseius womersleyi and A. eharai was evaluated by a leaf spray bioassay. Five of the acaricides tested, bifenazate, etoxazole, acequinocyl, flufenoxuron and chlorfenapyr were much less toxic to adult females of A. womersleyi and A. eharai than to T. urticae adult females. A. womersleyi adult females treated with five acaricides produced $52{\sim}93%$ as many eggs as untreated adult females. And A. eharai adult females treated with five acaricides laid $54{\sim}73%$ as many eggs as untreated adult females. The remaining acaricides showed high toxicity to adult females of A. womersleyi and A. eharai. All the insecticides tested were less toxic to T. urticae adult females than to adult females of A. womersleyi and A. eharai. However, tebufenozide and diflubenzuron did not significantly affect the survival and reproduction of adult females of A. womersleyi and A. eharai. All the fungicides tested showed low mortality (${\leq}24%$) to adult females of predatory mites. However, benomyl had significant effect on the reproduction of adult females of A. womersleyi and A. eharai. Four acaricides (bifenazate, acequinocyl, flufelloxuron and chlorfenapyr) were much less toxic to eggs of A. womersleyi and A. eharai than to T. urticae eggs. However, etoxazole caused relatively low hatchability ($58{\sim}62%$) of eggs of A. womersleyi and A. eharai. All the insecticides and fungicides tested did not significantly affect the hatch of eggs of predatory mites. It may be suggested from these results that four acaricides, two insecticides and four fungicides described could be Incorporated into the integrated mite management system with A. womersleyi and A. eharai in pear orchard.

  • Cotesia plutellae bracovirus (CpBV) is a polydnavirus symbiotic to C. plutellae parasitizing young larvae of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella. Several CpBV genes play important roles in suppressing immune responses of the parasitized larvae. This study tested a hypothesis that the CpBV genes inducing host immunosuppression could be applied to develop a potent recombinant baculovirus. Based on a previous study, a recombinant baculovirus expressing CpBV-ELP1 (AcMNPV-ELP1) was selected and multiplied using larvae of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua. The recombinant viruses were produced in a yield of $5{\times}10^{10}$ polyhedral inclusion body (PIB)/larva. The cultured AcMNPV-ELP1 exhibited a much higher pathogenicity against S. exigua larvae. However, its insecticidal activity was varied among larval instars of S. exigua, in which first and late instars were high susceptible. Spray of the recombinant baculovirus ($5{\times}10^6PIB/mL$) exhibited higher control efficacy (${\approx}$ 88%) against S. exigua larvae infesting cabbage than a chemical insecticide, tebufenozide, at 7 days after treatment. These results indicate that AcMNPV-ELP1 mass-cultured using host insect system is highly pathogenic and can be applied to develop a novel microbial control agent.

  • Caliroa carinata (Zombori) has heavily damaged the forests of Quercus mongolica in Sangju, Kyongbuk, Korea since 1996. However, information on the ecology and control of this pest was badly scarce. Thus we tried to study the ecology and chemical control of the sawfly through this study. Caliroa carinata is one generation per year. The adult sawflies emerged from June 8 to July 5 with peak at June 18. A female adult laid 11 eggs in rows on the backside of a leaf along the midribs and larger veins. Larvae have six instars, and the developmental period required to complete the larval stage was 19 days and 17 days at temperatures of $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. Each larval stage required 2-4 days to complete the development. The sawfly mostly preferred Quercus mongolica and Q. dentata, while avoiding Q. variabilis. Such insecticides as Tebufenozide, Flufenoxuron, Etofenprox, and Fenitrothion were sprayed on host plant leaves infected with test larvae in order to study the mortality. After 3 days of insecticide treatments, the mortalities were thoroughly examined. All insecticides showed higher than 95% of mortalities. Control values were also higher than 93%. The optimal season of insecticide application for pest control was estimated from late June to early July.
