A cumulative evidence indicates that consumption of tea catechin, flavan-3-ol derived from green tea leaves, lowers the risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, a precise mechanism for this cardiovascular action has not yet been fully understood. In the present study, we investigated the effects of different green tea catechins, such as epigallocatechin-3 gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin-3 gallate (ECG), and epicatechin (EC), on angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced hypertrophy in primary cultured rat aortic vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC). [$^3H$]-leucine incorporation was used to assess VSMC hypertrophy, protein kinase assay, and western blot analysis were used to assess mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) activity, and RT-PCR was used to assess c-jun or c-fos transcription. Ang II increased [$^3H$]-leucine incorporation into VSMC. However, EGCG and ECG, but not EGC or EC, inhibited [$^3H$]-leucine incorporation increased by Ang II. Ang II increased phosphorylation of c-Jun, extracellular-signal regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2 and p38 MAPK in VSMC, however, EGCG and ECG , but not EGC or EC, attenuated c-Jun phosphorylation increased by Ang II. ERK 1/2 and p38 MAPK phosphorylation induced by Ang II were not affected by any catechins. Ang II increased c-jun and c-fos mRNA expression in VSMC, however, EGCG inhibited c-jun but not c-fos mRNA expression induced by Ang II. ECG, EGC and EC did not affect c-jun or c-fos mRNA expression induced by Ang II. Our findings indicate that the galloyl group in the position 3 of the catechin structure of EGCG or ECG is essential for inhibiting VSMC hypertrophy induced by Ang II via the specific inhibition of JNK signaling pathway, which may explain the beneficial effects of green tea catechin on the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases observed in several epidemiological studies.
In this research, botanical extracts containing green tea, Saururus chinensis and Prunus padus were tested to see possibility as shampoo. Leaves of Green tea and Saururus chinensis were extracted with hot water. Prunus padus bark extract was applied reverse osmosis and ultrasonic extraction. When interfacial tension was measured among shampoo including botanical extracts, Sodium dodecylsulfate(SDS) and Quillaja Bark Saponin(QBS), that of shampoo was lower than that of SDS and QBS at lower concentration, however, it showed similar interfacial tension at 100% concentration. Shampoo showed moderate antimicrobial activity in Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Botanical extract did not indicate cell toxicity up to $350{\mu}g/ml$ concentration in MTT assay. Shampoo containing botanical extract was stable for 3 months, however, it showed considerable variation in pH and viscosity. In conclusion, shampoo containing botanical extract shows strong possibility for natural shampoo if the formulation is modified.
Green tea leaves 12.5 g were extracted twice with 500 ml boiling water. The green tea extract (GTE) contained 4.67 mg solid. The GTE contained polyphenols sush as 54.12% (-) epicatechin gallate, 26.21% (-) epicatechin, 10.71% epicatechin gallate, 7.09% (-) epicatechin and 1.85% catechin. The GTE inhibited the copper-catalyzed oxidation of human LDL at the concentrations of 50 and $100\;{\mu}g/ml$ GTE in the presence of $5\;{\mu}M$$CuSO_{4}$. The electrophoretic mobility of the LDL oxidized in the presence of $5\;{\mu}M\;CuSO_{4}$ was higher than that of the native LDL. The GTE also inhibited LDL oxidation induced by J774, human monocyte-derived macrophages and vascular endotherial cells. The LDL modified by copper or cells was inhibited by human macrophages at a much greater rate than native LDL in the presence of GTE. The GTE was found to be a potent inhibitor of modification of LDL. GTE inhibited the uptake of cell-modified $^(125)I-labelled$ LDL by macrophages. The formation of conjugated dienes was strongly inhibited in the presence of 50 or $100\;{\mu}g/ml$ GTE.

The present study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of green tea at different harvest time. The leaves were collected in late March(Ilro), early April(Okro and Ujeon), late April(Sejak), and early May(Eoksu and Hanra). The total polyphenol content of Sejak was highest (28.87mg TAE/g). Electron donating abilities toward $\alpha$,$\alpha$-diphenyl-$\beta$-picyryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical were approximately 80%. SOD-like activities were above 30%, where ujeon showed the highest activity ($38.95{\pm}0.96%$). The nitrite scavenging ability was pH-dependent and shown to be highest at pH 1.2, and lowest at pH 6.0. The inhibitory effects against the angiotensin I converting enzyme were over 85%, except for Okro ($58.22{\pm}4.66%$) and Hanra ($77.96{\pm}3.83%$). The tyrosinase inhibition rate increased with harvest time. Okro showed the highest caffeine content ($3.86{\pm}0.32%$) and had the highest antimicrobial activities against Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella typhimurium. The combined results of this work revealed that the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of green tea were independent of harvest time.

Bacillus subtilis BD0310 isolated from tea leaves was used for the development of a biofungicide against Pestalotiopsis longiseta causing gray blight of tea plants. The optimum growth conditions were investigated for the mass cultivation of the microbial agent. The optimum temperature and cultivation time were determined as $12{\sim}24$ hours at $30^{\circ}C$ and the optimum initial pH was pH 7.0 in nutrient broth. Among the tested carbon sources of fructose, galactose, glucose, glycerol, inositol, lactose, maltose, sorbitol and starch, maltose and inositol were found to highly increase antifungal activity of the microbial agent against P. longiseta. Yeast extract and tryptone apparently increased antifungal activity of the microbial agent among the tested nitrogen sources of casein, tryptone, malt extract, yeast extract and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$. The results will make a contribution to mass production of the antagonistic bacterium Bacillus subtilis BD0310 for development of a microbial agent controlling gray blight of tea plants.
Natural products in Chonnam, Korea were screened via anti-angiogenesis experiments, and 1 candidate product was identified, Corni fructus, which exerted dose-dependent inhibitory effects against angiogenesis, adipogenesis, and cell adhesion. C. fructus extract (CFE) exhibits an angiogenesis inhibitory effect superior to that of the EGCG from green tea leaves. The expression level of angiogenesis and adipogenesis-related signal molecules in the western blotting was reduced by increasing the amount of added CFE. Moreover, a diet supplemented with CFE was deemed more effective in inducing weight loss in LB mice than a representative synthetic diet drug, orlistat, which incidently caused the side effect of denuding the mice of their hair. These results indicate that C. fructus may prove to be a useful anti-adipogenic compound, and these in vitro results may be reflected later under in vivo conditions.
In order to develop catechin patches for skin regeneration at wound sites, patches with varying concentrations of catechin and chitosan were manufactured. An optimal composition ratio was determined by adjusting the drug release rate and amount, to maximize efficiency. The catechin used in this study was extracted from green tea leaves using a solvent/ultrasonication method, and its characteristics were confirmed through Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses. Patches were prepared with different concentrations of catechin and chitosan, and various properties were analyzed using techniques such as FT-IR, water contact angle analysis, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. It was observed that as the chitosan concentration increased, the release of catechin slowed down or almost ceased. A patch manufactured with 1.5 mg/cm2 of catechin at a 1 % chitosan concentration exhibited a high initial release rate over 24 h and demonstrated cellular biocompatibility. Consequently, these patches, with tailored release characteristics based on the concentrations of chitosan and catechin, hold promise for use as drug delivery systems in wound healing applications.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of addition of functional material(T1; pine needle powder, 0.4%, T2; perilla leaves powder, 0.4%, T3; green tea powder, 0.4%) on the quality characteristics of emulsion-type sausages. The samples were stored at $9{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for 40 days and analyzed with an interval of 10 days. The pH of all emulsion-type sausages increased as storage period increased. Water holding capacity(WHC) of all treatments were slightly increased as storage period increased and rapidly decreased on 40 days of storage. In texture analysis, hardness, chewiness, gumminess and brittleness were increased with storage in all treatments group. TBARS values of T3 was lower than those of other treatments at 1 days of storage, while that was the slightly higher in T4 at 40 day of storage. The L* values was decreased as storage period increased. The a* values was highest in C, while it was the lowest in T2 and T3. The residual nitrite content of all samples were in very safe range during the whole storage period. During the storage period 40 days, the Lactobacilli spp. of C were higher($10^7$CFU/g) than those of 3 treatments. In sensory evaluation, the score of overall acceptability were higher in the order of C(5.5-6.5)>T1(4.8-6.0)>T2(4.8-5.8)>T3(4.3-4.8). In the manufacture of functional sausage containing pine needle, perilla leaves and green tea powder, further studied are needs on addition type/ratio of functional materials and the use of added spices.
