This study was carried out to determine effect of acute renal ischemia on transport function of organic cation, tetraethylammonium (TEA), in rabbit kidney proximal tubule. Clamping of the renal artery for 30 and 60 min produced a polyuria which was accompanied by an increase in $Na^+$ excretion. The capacity of kidney cortical slices to accumulate TEA was increased after 30 and 60 min of ischemia. When blood flow was restored for 30 min after 30 and 60 min of ischemia, the augmented TEA uptake was recovered to the control values. Oxygen consumption of cortical slices was stimulated after 30 min of ischemia, whereas it was not altered by 60 min of ischemia. A 90-min ischemia produced a significant inhibition of TEA uptake and tissue oxygen consumption. These results suggest that the basolateral transport system for organic cation persists after ischemic periods of 60 min despite evidence that tubular reabsorptive mechanism of $Na^+$ and water is markedly impaired. This may indicate that the active secretory systems of proximal tubule are more resistant to ischemic injury than the reabsorptive systems.
The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of oolong tea extract on blood glucose level and antioxidant system in diabetic rats. The Sprague-Dawley rats were fed on AIN-76 based experimental diets containing 1 % oolong tea extract for 6 weeks. They were induced to be diabetic by receiving streptozotocin (45mg/kg BW) intramuscularly. Blood glucose, blood and hepatic concentration of vitamins A and E, and antioxidant enzyme activities were measured. Oolong tea extract feeding decreased the plasma glucose in diabetic rats. Dietary supplementation of oolong tea extract did not affect antioxidative enzyme activities such as superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase in diabetic rats. The plasma level of retinol was increased in diabetic rats by feeding oolong tea extract. Plasma and hepatic levels of ${\alpha}$-tocopherol were higher in diabetic rats fed oolong tea extract. In conclusion, these results suggest that oolong tea extract consumption might reduce the plasma glucose in diabetic rats and protect the oxidative damage from diabetic stress to some extent.
This study was conducted to obtain a better understanding of American green tea consumers for increasing Korean green tea sales in the US market. In doing so, this study investigated green tea choice attributes of US consumers and segmented them based upon their perceptions about important attributes of green tea. A factor-cluster segmentation approach was used for this study. An exploratory factor analysis identified five green tea choice motives: 'Sensory', 'Diet', 'Price', 'Health', and 'Brand'. Based upon these five choice attributes, cluster analyses classified all respondents into four homogeneous subgroups: 'Highly motivated', 'Taste/Price oriented', 'Health oriented', and 'Brand oriented'. Cross-tab tests proved that green tea consumption and purchasing patterns were significantly different among the four clusters. In particular, two cluster groups representing 'Highly motivated' and 'Health oriented' groups were found to offer the most utility for further American green tea market segmentation research. Findings show that American green tea consumers include a wide range of age groups and they usually buy green tea at grocery markets. Managerial implications for all cluster groups based upon their unique characteristics are provided. Korean green tea companies can apply these findings in order to develop more effective and efficient marketing strategies to attract American consumers to buy more Korean green tea.

Regular green tea consumption has been associated with a reduced risk of cancer, partly via antioxidant effects of green tea in protecting cellular components against free radical. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of green tea extract (GTE) on oxidative damage to DNA in CHL cells.(omitted)
Tea is the most widely consumed beverage after water in the world. The consumption of iced tea has increased in Western countries and spiked among teenagers for enjoyment, freshening up and alertness. A teenager presented with symptoms of hepatitis. Liver ultrasound revealed sludge in the gallbladder. Laboratory investigations excluded all known causes of hepatotoxicity. Detail nutritional history revealed that the patient had been drinking 1.5-2 liters of black iced tea per day for the last three months. He was immediately advised to stop drinking any tea. Gradually all symptoms disappeared and two months after discontinuation of the tea, all liver enzymes returned to normal and the sludge in the gallbladder disappeared. This case report underlines the importance of a meticulous assessment of a child's dietary behavior when investigating a case of hepatotoxicity and raises awareness about the potential side effects of tea overconsumption.
The effect of probenecid on the transport of tetraethylammonium (TEA) was studied in renal cortical slices and isolated membrane vesicles to investigate the interaction of organic anion with the organic cation transport system in proximal tubule. Probenecid reversibly inhibited TEA uptake by renal cortical slices in a dose-dependent manner over the concentration range of 1 and 5 mM. The efflux of TEA was not affected by the presence of 3 mM probenecid. Kinetic analysis indicated that probenecid decreased Vmax without significant change in Km. Probenecid inhibited significantly tissue oxygen consumption at concentrations of 3 and 5 mM. However, probenecid did not significantly reduce TEA uptake in brush border and basolateral membrane vesicles prepared from renal cortex even at a concentration as high as 10 mM. These results indicate that probenecid reduces TEA uptake in cortical slices by inhibiting tissue metabolism rather than by an interaction with the organic ration transporter.
Sujeonggwa is a popular Korean traditional beverage. However, consumers only prepare it at home on special occasions due to the time and effort required. Developing a convenient form of Sujeonggwa may promote its consumption. The objectives of this study were to 1) develop Sujeonggwa in a tea bag using different sweeteners and 2) describe the characteristics of Sujeonggwa's flavor in tea bag samples and 3) determine how well consumers accept the tea bag samples. A total of four types of Sujeonggwa in a tea bag were developed: two samples with varying amount of sugar, another sample using sugar and stevia and the last sample using sugar and short chain fructo-oligosaccharide as a sweetener. A commercial ginger tea and cinnamon tea were used as control products. Descriptive analysis was conducted on the same six samples and a descriptive panel identified its attributes. A total of 61 consumers evaluated acceptability using a nine-point hedonic scale and how they felt about intensities of the samples using a just-about-right scale. The results indicated that consumers liked Sujeonggwa samples in a tea bag more than commercial ginger tea and cinnamon tea.
This study was conducted to examine the effects of mulberry fruit tea (MFT) on the levels of serum lipid profiles and serum cardiovascular disease markers in sixty middle-aged people(30 males and 30 females) who consumed MFT for 4 weeks. Anthropometric measurements, serum lipid profile levels, and serum cardiovascular disease markers were analyzed before and after consumption of MFT. After consumption of MFT, no significant differences were observed in anthropometric measurements, levels of serum aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) in males and females. Among serum lipid profiles, triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol were decreased significantly, whereas HDL-cholesterol was significantly increased.
The present study investigated the protective effects of green tea against acute ethanol-induced lipid peroxidation and the change of antioxidative enzyme activities in various regions of rat brain : cortex, cerebellum, striatum and hippocampus. The following parameters were examined : malondialdehyde(MDA) levels and activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase and glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px). Male Sprague-Dawley rats were given the experimental containing 1% green tea powder or control diet for 4 weeks, and at the end of feeding diet group received acute ethanol(5g/kg body weight) or equicaloric sucrose solution intragastrically. Green tea powder significantly decreased MDA levels in the striatum compared to control-non alcohol treated group to 1% green tea-non alcohol treated group without altering the antioxidative enzyme activities. Green tea resulted in a significant increase in GSH-Px activities in the hippocampus compared to either control-non alcohol treated group(0.043units/mg protein) or 1% green tea-non alcohol treated group(0.071units/mg protein). In conclusion, these results suggest that moderate consumption of green tea leaves can exert protective effects against ethanol-induced oxidative stress in brain regions, by reducing MDA concentrations in the striatum and enhancing GSH-Px activities in the hippocampus. Water extracts of persimmon leaf tea(PLTE), green tea(GTE) and oolong tea(OTE), at the con centration used for human consumption, were examined for inhibitory effects on the mutagenicity of major classes of dietary and environmental mutagens including indirect acting mutagens, B[ ]P (benzo[ ]pyrene), IQ(2 amino 3 methylimidazo[4,5 f]quinoline), 2 AA(2 aminoanthracene) in the presence of S9 mix and direct acting mutagen, 4 NQO(4 nitroquinoline 1 oxide) without S9 mix, using the modified Ames Salmonella/microsome assay. PLTE, GTE and OTE showed very potent and concentration dependent antimutagenic effects against indirect acting mutagens B[ ]P and IQ. At the maximum concentration(16,200 g/plate) of each tea extract, number of colonies decreased in a dose dependent manner up to 82~100%. Similar inhibition of PLTE, GTE and OTE were seen at higher concentration in the mutagenicity of the 2 AA following an initial increase in the activity at lower concentration. However, the mutagenicity of the direct acting mutagen 4 NQO were not suppressed at lower concentration of the three tea extracts, and higher concentration of the tea extracts enhanced mutagenic activity of the mutagen. There were no differences in the mode of antimutagenesis between PLTE, GTE, and OTE, in both Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100 strains against the same mutagen. In conclusion, the water extracts of persimmon leaf tea, green tea and oolong tea possess marked antimutagenic potential against a variety of important dietary and environmental indirect acting mutagens, but the activity was not observed against the direct acting mutagens. These results suggest that the mode of inhibitory action may not have resulted from direct interaction between tea extracts and the mutagens, but rather from indirect metabolic inactivation of mutagens by tea extracts.
