This study aims to identify benthic macroinvertebrate fauna inhabiting at the mountain valley stream (Mt. Cheonggye) in Korea and the relationship between physical environmental factors and biological indices. Benthic macroinvertebrates were collected at five locations on August 24 and October 14, 2020, and were identified as 4 phyla, 7 classes, 16 orders, 42 families, and 72 species. Dominance ranged from 0.38 to 0.59, diversity 2.81 to 3.75, richness 3.25 to 4.63, evenness 0.65 to 0.84, and %EPT (Ephemeroptera-PlecopteraTrichoptera) richness value 42% to 73%, respectively. All sites were evaluated as a very good status by mostly biological indices based on tolerance of indicator organisms in Korea. As a result of principal component analysis, biological indices are classified into species-level indices and higher cartegory-level indices according to the taxonomic level of the indicator organism considered in each index. As a result of canonical correspondence analysis, it was confirmed that current velocity was a major factor that increased species richness and classified biological indices according to taxonomic category level. Water depth was a major factor related to the community indices, and the deeper the water depth, the lower the diversity and the evenness.

Chlorophyll a (chl a) has been used as an indicator for phytoplankton biomass in pelagic ecosystems due to the relative ease of measurement and selectivity for autotrophs in mixed plankton assemblages. However, the use of chi a as an indicator for phytoplankton biomass is restricted due to its inability to resolve taxonomic differences of phytoplankton and the highly variable relationship of chi a with phytoplankton. Here, we describe the analysis of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) photosynthetic pigment data using CHEMTAX, which is a matrix factorization program that uses chemical taxonomic indices (phytoplankton carotenoids) to quantify the abundance of phytoplankton groups. Compared to direct microscopic counting that can distinguish species within broad groups, the resolution of taxonomic groups by CHEMTAX is generally coarse. It can only distinguish between diatoms, dinoflagellates, cryptophytes, cyanobacteria, chlorophytes, prasinophytes, and haptophytes. However, CHEMTAX analysis is much faster and less expensive than microscopic counting methods. HPLC pigment observations were taken in the spring, summer, fall, and winter in$ 2005\sim2006$ within Gamak Bay, South Korea. CHEMTAX results revealed that diatoms were the dominant taxonomic group in Gamak Bay. In inner Gamak Bay, the ratio between diatoms and cryptophytes was $75\sim80%$, and the ratio between dinoflagellates and cryptophytes was $10\sim15%$. In outer Gamak Bay, the ratio between diatoms and cryptophytes was $85\sim90%$, and the ratio between dinflagellates and cryptophytes was only $1\sim5%$. The population structure was seasonal. Relative diatom populations were less in the summer than the winter season.

Elsholtzia hallasanensis, E. springia, and E. splendens var. fasciflora (Lamiaceae) were reported recently as new species or new varieties of E. splendens according to their morphological characteristics. To reappraise the taxonomic status of these additional taxa and to determine the relationships between all Korean Elsholtzia taxa except E. saxatilis, which is distributed in North Korea, molecular studies based on the nrDNA (ITS) and cpDNA (rpl16, and trnH-psbA) sequences of seven taxa of Elsholtzia and one outgroup were carried out. The molecular data support that E. angustifolia and E. minima are distinct species from E. splendens and E. ciliata, respectively, because they have several private marker genes and show monophyly. The molecular data also support that E. splendens has a very close taxonomic relationship with both E. hallasanensis and E. springia. We found that E. splendens var. fasciflora, with multiple inflorescence, was based on several private marker genes and on the monophyly of its trees, suggesting that it can be considered as a variety. Elsholtzia springia, with the same sequences and the same morphological characteristics with E. hallasanensis after transplanting, should be treated as a synonym of E. hallasanensis. Moreover, we consider the taxonomic status of E. hallasanensis as E. splendens var. hallasanensis (Y. Lee) N.S. Lee & C.S. Lee, stat. nov.
Numerical analysis based on 33 morphological characters from 25 populations of 8 species of tribe Forsythieae in Korea was conducted to investigate the taxonomic delimitation and discuss the systematic relationships. In this study, Fontanesia phyllyreoides Labill was adopted as comparing outgroup to discuss the taxonomic status of Abeliophyllum distichum and elucidate the taxonomic relationships between tribe Forsythieae and tribe Fontanesiae. Based on the results of PCA, the sum of contributions for the total variance of three major principal components was 79.6% (PC1 54.2%, PC2 15.4% and PC3 10.0%, repectively). Two dimensional plotting from PCA results recognized three distinct generic clusters. Among the populations of Forsythia, two distinct groups were clustered as I. koreana-saxatilis-viridissima and II. ovata-nakaii. However, 15 populations of Abeliophyllum distichum were arranged randomly without any tendency, and the infraspecies of Abeliophyllum distichum could be recognized as individual variations. Fontanesia phyllyreoides Labill was clustered independently and intertribal limitation was clearly distinguished.
Gnetum (Gnetaceae, Gnetales) is a gymnosperm genus with ca. 35 species distributed in tropical forests around the world. Due to its dioecious habit and lack of diagnostic characters from vegetative tissue, the identification of Gnetum species is not easy without seeds or reproductive structures. To identify and verify their phylogenetic positions, we applied DNA barcoding to Cambodian Gnetum collections gathered between 2010 and 2015, with previously designed cp matK gene primers. We newly sequenced partial matK sequences from 72 Gnetum collections, 43 out of 72 from Cambodia, and analyzed 115 Gnetum accessions using the neighbor-joining method. The resulting neighbor-joining tree categorized Cambodian Gnetum samples into three clades of species: G. macrostachyum, G. montanum, and G. aff. gracilipes. The recognition of G. aff. gracilipes in Cambodia is reported here for the first time. Taxonomic information for the three recognized Cambodian Gnetum species is provided and the benefits of the taxonomic reevaluation assisted by DNA barcoding are emphasized in this work.
Goodyera rosulacea, which is morphologically similar to G. repens, is described recently as a new species based on its distinct morphological characters such as rosette-formed leaves, short rhizome and habitat. To verify the taxonomic identity of G. rosulacea and its taxonomic relationship within Korean Goodyera taxa, sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA and the trnL region of cpDNA from 24 accessions including 1 outgroup accession were analyzed. Aligned sequences were analyzed using maximum parsimony and distance method, and the taxonomic identity and the taxonomic relationships among the related taxa were estimated by the existence of private marker gene and the phylogenetic tree of the aligned sequences. Molecular data indicate that G. rosulacea gas several private marker genes and shows monophyly in phylogenetic trees of both ITS and trnL sequences. the pairwise distance between G. rosulacea and the orher taxa of Korean Goodyera was 3.49-6.68% for ITS region and 5.05-9.53% for trnL region, indicating that G. rosulacea could be treated as an independent species. Therefore, our molecular data support the taxonomic of G. rosulacea as a distinct species of Korea. In phylogenetic trees, G. rosulacea formed same clade with G. repens, which has similar morphological characters with G. rosulacea, and showed the lowest pairwise distance with G. repens among Korean Goodyera taxa. These molecular data sugguested that G. rosulacea and G. repens are closely related taxa.
Palynological characters such as pollen grain polar axis length (PL), pollen equatorial diameter (ED), colpus length, colpus width, and P/E ratio of six species of Quercus subgenus Lepidobalanus Endl. from Korea were studied. A significant interspecific variation, unequal distances between the species, and various degree of intraspecific variations were found. The taxonomic value of the pollen morphology parameters measured was found to vary according to species. These results suggest a possible relationship between parameters measured and ploidy level of the Quercus species studied.
A geometrid genus Pareulype Herbulot sensu Inoue (1977) is reviewed in Korea. Up to now, two species, P. taczanowskiaria (Oberthur) and P. onoi Inoue, were known from Korea and these two species were newly combined into another genus Pelurga Hubner. One Pareulype species, P. consanguinea (Butler), is first recognized from Korea throughout the present study. Diagnoses of each genus and species are provided with illustrations of adults and genitalia. Phylogenetic relationship of Pareulype and Pelurga Hubner is briefly discussed.
Archaea substantially contribute to global geochemical cycling and energy cycling and are impacted by land-use change. However, the response of archaeal communities to a change from upland field to paddy field has been poorly characterized. Here, soil samples were collected at two depths (0-20 cm and 20-40 cm) from one upland field and six paddy fields that were established on former upland fields at different times (1, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 years before the study). Barcoded pyrosequencing was employed to assess the archaeal communities from the samples at taxonomic resolutions from phylum to genus levels. The total archaeal operational taxonomic unit (OTU) richness showed a significant positive correlation with the land-use change duration. Two phyla, Euryarchaeota and Crenarchaeota, were recorded throughout the study. Both the relative abundance and OTU richness of Euryarchaeota increased at both depths but increased more steadily at the subsurface rather than at the surface. However, these data of Crenarchaeota were the opposite. Additionally, the archaeal composition exhibited a significant relationship with C/N ratios, total phosphorus, soil pH, Olsen phosphorus, and the land-use change duration at several taxonomic resolutions. Our results emphasize that after a change from upland fields to paddy fields, the archaeal diversity and composition changed, and the duration is an important factor in addition to the soil chemical properties.
