In order to provide fundamental information about the floristic composition of the area along with an assessment of the environmental impact, a floristic study of the vascular plants in the Tamjin River estuary in Gangjin-gun was conducted for a total of nine days, in the period from June 2014 to September 2014. We found that the vascular plants in this region comprised 424 taxa belong to 102 families, 281 genera, 390 species, 5 subspecies, 26 varieties, and 3 forma. Five taxa of Korean endemic plants including Weigela subsessilis (Nakai) L.H.Bailey, Lespedeza maximowiczii var. tricolor (Nakai) Nakai, and Clematis trichotoma Nakai were collected. Two least concern (LC) taxa of rare plants (as designated by the Korea Forest Service) were collected: Hydrocharis dubia (Blume) Backer and Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco. Ten the floristic regional indicator taxa from the third to the fifth grade were identified: two taxa belonged to grade IV, and eight taxa belonged to grade III. Twenty-four taxa of salt-tolerant plants, including Artemisia fukudo Makino, Carex rugulosa Kuk., and Suaeda glauca (Bunge) Bunge, as well as 44 taxa of aquatic plants, including Najas marina L., Nuphar oguraensis Miki, and Nymphoides indica (L.) Kuntze, were investigated in this region. Fifty-nine taxa of naturalized plants were recorded, among which the following six taxa were plants that caused ecosystem disturbance: Ambrosia artemisiifolia L., Humulus scandens (Lour.) Merr., Lactuca scariola L., Rumex acetosella L., Solidago altissima L., and Symphyotrichum pilosum (Willd.) G.L.Nesom.
We quantitatively investigated compositions of fish and invertebrate bycatch in Korean shrimp fisheries. We sampled shrimp trawl bycatch from 48 commercial trawls over 1 year. These samples contained 108 taxa from 50 families, with 60 fish taxa contributing 51.2% of the total biomass and 48 invertebrate taxa 48.8%. However, 86.32% of the total individual organism density comprised invertebrates, while individual fishes made up the remainder. Within the bycatch, two fish species varied in population size structure by season, suggesting recruitment is seasonal in these taxa. Overall general catch characteristics (total bycatch biomass and organism density) varied significantly by season and tide, and a significant interaction effect was observed (season$\times$tide) on total density, but not on total biomass. The data collected will be used in designing a program of long-term bycatch monitoring.
The species composition of larval fish assemblages in the Nakdong River estuary, Korea, was determined using monthly samples collected between September 2010 and August 2011 at two stations. A total of forty three larval species were collected during the study. Among forty three taxa of fish larvae, summer gobies, Clupea pallasii, Engraulis japonicus, spring gobies, Konosirus punctatus, winter gobies, Sardinops melanostictus, Coilia nasus were dominant taxa, and these eight taxa accounted for 95.0% in the total number of individuals. Species composition and abundance varied greatly spatio-temprally showing the peak abundances of fish larvae in August 2011, and a few fish larvae were occurred in November 2010. Cluster analysis based on the number of individuals of fish larvae showed that 21 month-station sampling units were classified into five groups at the similarity level of 50%, and the results of ANOSIM and SIMPER analysis revealed significant differences in community structure among five groups.
This study was to establish the floristic composition of vascular plants of Mt. Hwangjang (1,077.3m). Floristic composition of vascular plants were conducted during April 2006${\sim}$August 2007. Vascular plants were composed of 97 families, 257 genera, 357 species, 5 subspecies, 42 varieties and 9 formae, totaling 413 taxa. Among the investigated resources plants, 6 taxa were Korean endemic species. The special plants based on floral region by Ministry of Environment (2006) were 55 taxa. A naturalized plants were 15 species, correspond to 5.2% of totaling 290 species (Kim and Lee, 2006) appeared in South Korea.
The process of manufacturing craft beer involves a wide variety of spontaneous microorganisms, acting in different stages of the brewing process, that contribute to the distinctive characteristics of each style. The objective of this work was to compare the structure of microbial communities associated with two different craft beer styles (Doppelbock and Märzen lagers), at a late maturation stage, and to identify discriminative, or style-specific taxa. Bacterial and fungal microbial communities were analyzed by Illumina sequencing of 16S rRNA gene of prokaryotes and the ITS 2 spacer of fungi (eukaryotes). Fungal communities in maturating beer were dominated by the yeast Dekkera, and by lactic acid (Lactobacillus and Pediococcus) and acetic acid (Acetobacter) bacteria. The Doppelbock barrels presented more rich and diverse fungal communities. The Märzen barrels were more variable in terms of structure and composition of fungal and bacterial communities, with occurrence of exclusive taxa of fungi (Aspergillus sp.) and bacteria (L. kimchicus). Minority bacterial taxa, differently represented in the microbiome of each barrel, may underlie the variability between barrels and ultimately, the distinctive traits of each style. The composition of the microbial communities indicates that in addition to differences related to upstream stages of the brewing process, the contact with the wood barrels may contribute to the definition of style-specific microbiological traits.
Herein, we explored the potential of the apple's core microbiota for biological control of Erwinia amylovora, which causes fire blight disease, and analyzed the structure of the apple's bacterial community across different tissues and seasons. Network analysis results showed distinct differences in bacterial community composition between the endosphere and rhizosphere of healthy apples, and eight taxa were identified as negatively correlated with E. amylovora, indicating their potential key role in a new control strategy against the pathogen. This study highlights the critical role of the apple's bacterial community in disease control and provides a new direction for future research in apple production. In addition, the findings suggest that using the composition of the apple's core taxa as a biological control strategy could be an effective alternative to traditional chemical control methods, which have been proven futile and environmentally harmful.
This study investigated the species composition and distribution of woody plants, and flora of vascular plants of Cheonjiyeon where is located in the most southern region of Korea. Twenty-nine taxa of trees were distributed in the valley, and of these, deciduous broad-leaved trees were 13. Of the total number of 2,547 trees, 1,429 were deciduous broad-leaved trees and remainder was broad-leaved evergreen. Deciduous broad-leaved trees covered 48.7% of the tree canopy while evergreen broad-leaved trees covered only 42.3%. The total number of shrub taxa was 37 with more evergreen shrub taxa than deciduous. Evergreen shrubs occupied 64.4% of shrub canopy while deciduous shrubs covered only 35.4%. The result of the investigation of flora showed that there are 446 taxa of flora including 114 families, 320 genera, 397 species, 1 subspecies, 39 varieties, and 9 forma. Of these, two species, Rubus hongnoensis Nakai and Lycoris chejuensis K. Tae et S. Ko, are endemic plants of Jeju Island. The flora includes 17 taxa of rare plants that are distributed only in Jeju Island in Korea. Also, the flora includes 1 taxon, Elaeocarpus sylvestris (Loureiro) Poiret var. ellipticus (Thunb.) Hara, of Korean natural monument, 2 taxa, Psilotum nudum (L.) Griseb. and Crypsinus hastatus (Thunb.) Copeland, of legally protected wildlife and plants, 38 taxa of naturalized plants, and 75 taxa of introduced plants.
Seasonal variation of algae distribution were studied in the Chuam reservoir from August 1996 to July 1997. As a result, 127 taxa were observed, representing 6 classes, 14 orders, 5 suborders, 29 families, 2 subfamilies, 54 genus, 118 species, 7 variaties and 2 formula. The majors of them are Chlorophyceae (59 taxa), Bacillariophyceae(39 taxa) and Cyanophyceae(20 taxa). The number of species was that 35 and 31 taxa were occurred in August 1996 and April 1997, 11 and 17 taxa in July 1997 and October 1996 respectively at Dam station, 53 taxa were occurred in September, 18 taxa in November at Munduck station. The biomass composition of occurrence species were as fallowes; Cyanophyceae are 80%, Bacillariophyceae 14% and Chlorophyceae 5% at Dam station and Cyanophyceae are 90%, Bacillariophyceae 1.3% and Chlorophyceae 0.4% at Munduck at Munduk station. At Munduk station, water bloom occurred by Cyanophyceae(99.9%, 3.7 $\times$ 10$^{7}$ cells/L) in November 1996 and the major causing algae was Microcrystis aeruginosa. Microcystis aeruginosa was dominant species (dominant index : 0.72 - 0.99) during summer and autumn, Fragilaria crotonensis and Asterionella formasa (DI : 0.33 - 0.74) during winter and spring. The water quality factors of the Chuam reservoir were that the values of water temperature ranged of 3.6 - 31.4$\circ$C, pH 6.7 - 9.0, conductivity 69.6-118.2 $\mu $s/cm, and turbidity 1.0-22.5 NTU, and the proper temperature of water for algae growth was 15 and 16.7$\circ $C in April and November. Also the concentration of dissolved oxygen(DO) ranged of 6.8-15.5mg/L, total nitrogen(T-N) 0.54-1.78 mg/L, total phosphrous (T-P) 0.003-0.034 mg/L, and chlorophyll-a 0.9-23.2mg/m$^{3}$. The concentration of Chlorophyll-a was in inverse proportion T-N/T-P ratio.
Floristic composition and medicinal plant resources were investigated in six regions, Mt. Sorak, Mt. Jumbong, Mt. Odae, Mt. Hwaak, Mt. Taebaek, and Mt. Bangtae, represent in Kangwon province.
