  • Sliding wear test was employed to determine the effect of whisker content and orientation on the firiction and wear behavior of SiC whisker reinforced alumina. Composites containing unidirectionally oriented whiskers were prepared by a modified tape casting followed by lamination, binder removal and hot pressing in order to align the whiskers in the tape casting direction. Wear coefficients on three directions were measured; parallel and normal to the tape casting direction on the tape casting surface and normal to lamination direction on surfnce normal to the tape casting direction. In the effect of whisker orientation, the highest wear rate was obtained in the direction parallel tape casting direction and the lowest in the direction normal to lamination direction at all temperatures. Silicon oxide layer amoothing the surface was detected by energy dispersive X-ray analysis on the worn surface.

  • Dispersion behavior was investigated as functions of species and arrount of addtives, binders, abrasives, lubricants, etc.. Dispersibilityand other various properties were affected by the fuctional groups of binders. Friction coefficient and surface roughness of tape were changed with lubricants, therefore duratility of magnetic tape was varied. As a result of above investigations, we concluded that dispersion behavior of particles was very sensitive for obtaining maximum properties of metal particle tape.

  • The rheological characteristics of PNN-PZT ceramics with high electromechanical coupling factor and electricstrictive constant was investigated. Green sheets of piezoelectric PNN-PZT ceramics were made by tape-casting method with controlling the mixing ratio of a dispersant, an organic binder, and a plasticizer. When the dispersant content was 1 wt.%, the slurry showed the best rheological characteristics for tape casting. The amounts of the plasticizer and the binder was simultaneously varied in the ranges of 1.5~18 and 3~9 wt.%, respectively. When both the plasticizer and binder of 6 wt.% mixed in the solution, respectiveley, the highest green density of the sheet was obtained without macrodefects. Multilyered structures of PNN-PZT/Ag-Pd were successfully fabricated using the optimized tape casting condition. The polarization behavior of these actuators seemed to similar to typical electricstrictive polarization behavior. The multilayer ceramic actuator is about $0.6{\times}10^{-3}$ of strain.

  • In order to describe external effects on the behavior of the adhesive tape, the semi-rigid body cylinder chain model for adhesive tape has been proposed as follows. Firstly the behavior of the tape is in detail investigated while it's being pulled off from the plate, and subsequently a relevant phenomenological model is designed. Then all the contributors affecting the force to peel out the tape from plate (hereafter, the pull out force) are clearly defined and their sensitivity analyses are made to set up the experimental reference condition, under which the angular dependence of the pull out force is measured in every $10^{\circ}$. The experimental data turn out to be in good agreement with the theoretical ones by our model within the measurement error, and the effects due to other factors are proved to be well explained from the phenomenological viewpoint. From these results, the concept of this study might be expected to be very useful for the test and evaluation of PSA types of adhesive tape.

  • The I$_{c}$ degradation behavior of Bi-2223 tapes bent at RT and 77K were investigated using the bending device invented by Goldacker. Test results on fixing the tape at RT and 17K showed no difference. At 17K and RT bending, the critical strain was 0.67 and 0.50$\%$, respectively, for the VAM-l tape. For the AMSC tape, it was 0.94 and 0.88$\%$, respectively. These results show that there is additional residual stress in the superconducting filaments to be bent at 17K which shifts the formation of cracks into smaller bending radii. This was proved by computational analysis based on the mixture rule of composites. For the VAM-l tape, the Ie degradation behavior using the Goldacker type device shifted to higher strain levels at about 0.5$\%$, as compared with the FRP sample holders which have a critical bending strain of about 0.24$\%$. Also, for the externally reinforced AMSC tape, Ie degradation using the Goldacker type device begins at a higher strain level, at 0.88$\%$ as compared with using FRP sample holders, at 0.74$\%$. The difference between both cases can be explained by the tensile' and thermal stresses that the tapes were subjected to during fixing (soldering) when the FRP sample holders were used.

  • Transport current and magnetic field which is generated by transport current make AC current - AC mag-netic field condition(AC-AC condition) in AC power application system using HTS tape. Therefore, characteristics of AC loss under the AC-AC condition are necessary to estimate AC loss of power device with accuracy such as HTS transformer. In this paper, we researched transport current loss, magnetization loss by perpendicular magnetic field and total loss which is represented as summation of both losses under the AC-AC condition in single HTS tape. As a result, magnetization loss showed increasing behavior under 65mT and decreasing behavior upper 65mT by influence of transport current. Transport current loss was increased continuously through out whole measurement ranges in the AC-AC condition. Total loss in HTS tape was dominated entirely by magnetization loss.

  • The degradation behavior of the critical current $(I_c)$ of Bi-2223 superconducting tapes under pressurized liquid nitrogen were investigated using a newly developed p-shaped sample holder which gives a series of bending strains to a sample. Three kinds of commercially available multi-filamentary Bi-2223 superconducting tapes were used. At atmospheric pressure, the Ie degradation behavior depended on the manufacturing process undergone by each tape. The tapes externally reinforced or densified by over pressure showed better bending strain tolerance than the Ag alloy-sheathed Bi-2223 tape. But these tapes showed a significant $I_c$ degradation when pressurized to 1 MPa in liquid nitrogen. For all samples, after depressurization to atmospheric pressure from 1 MPa, the Ie was completely recovered to its initial values at atmospheric pressure. When the samples were subjected to a thermal cycle wherein the tape was warmed up to room temperature after being depressurized from 1 MPa, it was found that the larger degradation of $I_c$ occurred at the regions where significant ballooning occurred, such as $0\%\;and\;0.2\%$. However, an improved ballooning damage tolerance was observed in the highly-densified tape.

  • In aqueous alumina tape casting, the effects of altering the composition of the suspensions, the binders and the casting thickness were studied. The rheological behavior of the suspensions and the defects of the dried tapes were examined and the relationships between them are discussed. The changes in the defect regions reported in the previous paper were related with the rheological properties with variations of the binder, the composition and the casting thickness. The shear thinning factor increased with the organic content and the solid content (the decrease of water content). The apparent viscosity increased with the shear thinning factor. The relation between the shear thinning factor and the log apparent viscosity was similar for all binder types. In the relation between the defect free region and the rheological properties, the defect free region became narrower with increasing casting thickness. The defect free region is independent of binder type. Therefore, the thicker tape is more difficult to produce in aqueous alumina tape casting. Knowledge of the rheological properties of the suspensions could help Predict the defect type and the possibility of defect free dried tapes.

  • Effects of particle size distribution of alumina ceramics on behaviors of tape casting were investigated with emphases on the rheological characteristic of slurry, green density, green sheet strength, and sintering density. For the control of particle size distribution of alumina, the commercial grade low soda alumina, which had different mean particle size of 3.58 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 0.42 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, were chosen and blended together. As results, the mixing of 80 wt% fine powder and 20 wt% coarse powder(designated to FC20) led to the increase of packing density and strength of green sheet, and made it easy to handle during processing without lowering of sintering density. Besides, the pseudoplastic behavior of slurry decreased with increase of the fraction of coarse alumina powder.
