This study examined the possibility of solving the water shortage problem through the water reuse of buildings through the Suwon water reuse (greywater) facility installation project conducted as a pilot project of Ministry of Environment. Water reuse of individual building units can reduce city water demand by up to 25%. This is a level that can solve the water shortage problem in Korea. However, in order to revitalize the water reuse facilities of individual buildings, it is necessary to solve the problem of the user's rejection of the greywater and the economical problems. The resolution of the user's rejection can be solved by linking the MBR process with the AOP process. When the MBR process and the AOP process are operated in conjunction with each other, it is found that the users do not feel the water quality difference with the tap water. Economical problems can be solved at the water rate levels when the facility capacity is over 100 ton/day considering the construction cost and the operation cost, and when the operation cost alone is over 15 ton/day. Furthermore, when considering the social benefit cost, it is found that profit is generated from 150 ton/day.
A rental housing has a key role to supply the living space to non-ownership. A public rental housing is particularly aimed at providing the living space for the low-income households with a low rent fee. Therefore, the local government would try to maintain the facilities of the rental housing and to get the decent living condition. For getting the required living condition, it should make a maintenance plan, which contains the repair time, repair scope and targeted component and finishings. This study is aimed at providing the optimal repair time in 12 components and components of the rental housing which is controlled by the local government. The optimal repair time has two steps to get the final result. First, it would draw the 1'st repair time with the probabilistic and empirical approach. Second, comparing the drawn data and the service life, the optima repair time would be provided with considering the components' attributes. Result are as follows : First, the optimal repair time would be considered with the component attributes. There are user's convenience, its safety and physical aspect. Second, the kitchen utensils, elevator and water tap has a optimal time of 16, 19, 17 years respectively which is considered with physical aspect. In addition, the optima repair time of the wiring appliance and lighting equipment are 12 years and 10 years respectively.
Backgrounds: The accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), March 2011, caused serious radioactive contamination over wide area in east Japan. Therefore, it is important to know the effect of the accident and the status of NPP. Materials and Methods: This paper provides a review on the status of radiation dose and radioactive contamination caused by the accident on the basis of publicized information. Results and Discussion: Monitoring of radiation dose and exposure dose of residents has been conducted extensively by the governments and various organizations. The effective dose of general residents due to the accident proved to be less than a mSv both for external and internal dose. The equivalent committed dose of thyroid was evaluated to be a few mSv in mean value and less than 50 mSv even for children. Monitoring of radioactivity concentration has been carried out on food ingredients, milk and tap water, and actual meal. These studies indicated the percentage of foods above the regulation standard was over 10% in 2011 but decreasing steadily with time. The internal dose due to foods proved to be tens of ${\mu}Sv$ and much less than that due to natural $^{40}K$ even in the Fukushima area and decreasing steadily, although high level concentration is still observed in wild plants, wild mushrooms, animals and some kind of fishes. Conclusion: According to extensive studies, not only the effect of the accident but also the pathway and countermeasures against radioactive contamination have been revealed, and they are applied very effectively for restoration of environment and reconstruction of the area.
Abstract: The amount of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and o-xylene (BTEX) in 30 kinds of bottled waters purchased from market and 9 kinds of tap waters from home were determined using headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME). The sample was stirred at 1200 RPM G for 4 min using a magnetic bar with $100\;{\mu}m$ PDMS as adsorbent for BTEX. Then it was desorbed from the fiber for 1 min at room temperature. Quantitation was achieved using standard calibration method. The limit of detection was determined as benzene 0.39 (${\pm}0.04$) ng/mL, toluene 0.08 (${\pm}0.04$) ng/mL, ethylbenzene 0.04 (${\pm}0.01$) ng/mL, and o-xylene 0.05 (${\pm}0.02$) ng/mL. Benzene and o-xylene were not detected in any samples, but toluene was detected in 11 samples, and ethylbenzene was detected just in 3 samples among 30 investigated bottled waters. The concentration range of investigated materials for toluene and o-xylene were $0.24({\pm}0.09)\sim2.95\;({\pm}0.08)\;ng/mL$, $0.08({\pm}0.06)\sim0.93({\pm}0.10)\;ng/mL$, respectively.
Bentonite has been generally used as vertical cutoff barrier material and reported to have several problems regarding its low workability, drying shrinkage cracking by particle cohesion, and ineffective waterproof ability under sea water condition. In this study, the particle sealant, the furnace slag coated by the mixture of bentonite, sepiolite and guargum, was developed to compensate these weak points and the hydraulic conductivity of the particle sealant was evaluated. Drying shrinkage cracking and swelling index was estimated to find the optimal mixing ratio of bentonite, sepiolite and guargum. The hydraulic conductivity of the particle sealants having different amount of sealant (bentonite-sepioliteguargum mixture) coating the furnace slag was estimated using the rigid wall permeameter and flexible wall permeameter. The results showed that drying shrinkage cracking was not found in the bentonite-sepiolite mixture with 20% sepiolite contents and the results from free swelling tests for the sealant having 1 : 0.025, 1 : 0.05 and 1 : 0.075 of weight ratios of bentonite-sepiolite mixture and guargum under simulated sea water condition were higher than those for the bentonitesepiolite mixture without guargum under tap water condition. These three sealants were coated on the furnace slag with 50% and 60% of sealant in the particle sealant and the hydraulic conductivity was estimated. In the cases of the particle sealants having 20% sepiolite in the bentonite-sepiolite mixture and 1 : 0.075 weight ratio of the bentonite-sepiolite mixture and guargum, the hydraulic conductivity from the rigid wall permeameter was below $1.0{\times}10^{-7}$ cm/sec under simulated sea water condition. The hydraulic conductivity of the particle sealant having $1.0{\times}10^{-6}$~$1.0{\times}10^{-7}$ cm/sec by the rigid wall permeameter was estimated using the flexible wall permeameter and found to be below $1.0{\times}10^{-7}$ cm/sec.

The purpose of this study was to survey Suwon citizens over the age of 20 in order to provide basic data on the extent of coverage of the city's water reclamation system and to set guidelines for a policy on water reuse. The survey used a questionnaire with two fields, rainwater use and wastewater recycling, for analyzing factors that influenced water reuse. A factor analysis of 19 questionnaires gave a Cronbach's alpha coefficient greater than 0.4. Factors that influenced rainwater use were environmental protection, water charges, and the risk of climate change. Of the total explanatory power, the share of rainwater use and environmental protection was 39.7% and 28.1% respectively. Environmental protection (explanatory power 24.2%) had an effect on the explanatory power of wastewater reuse. When factors influencing wastewater recycling, like cost of recycling, water management policy, climate change, and suspension of tap water supply were included, the explanatory power of each of these factors went up by 4.3%, 2.8%, 3.3%, and 1.1%, respectively. For more effective wastewater recycling, a water management policy that factors in the above is required, along with a campaign to educate citizens on water management and environment conservation. Additionally, it may be necessary to improve the reliability and the quality of water supply.
In this study, we investigate the use of new carbon nanotube paste electrode (CNPE) for promoting the detection of lead (Pb) heavy metal in the a drinkable water, which negatively affects human brain and nerve system. For the evaluations, CNPE is served as a working electrode, while sensitivity and limit of detection (LOD) of Pb are measured in DI and tap water based electrolytes using squarewave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). As a result of that, in the 25~150 ppb range of $Pb^{2+}$ ions, its sensitivity and calculated LOD are $12.85\;{\mu}A/{\mu}M$ and 26 ppb in DI water based 0.1 M $H_{2}SO_{4}$ electrolyte while they are $10.36\;{\mu}A/{\mu}M$ and 38 ppb electrolytes respectively. In addition, experimentally measured LOD values of Pb are 4 ppb and 10 ppb in the two water electrolytes. The stripping of $Pb^{2+}$ ion is also controlled by surface reaction. Our experimental data are then compared with those of other already published references. With the comparison, it is proved that our electrode outperforms other electrodes in terms of the sensitivity and LOD of trace Pb metal.
Hydrocyclone is widely used in industry, for its simple design, high capacity, low maintenance and low operational cost. The objective of this study is to develop hydrocyclone coagulation and filtration system. The system is made of hydrocyclone ballasted coagulation with polyaluminium chloride silicate (PACS) and upflow filter to treat micro particles in urban storm runoff. Roadside sediment particles (< $200{\mu}m$) was mixed with tap water to make various turbid suspensions to simulate urban storm runoff. The filter cartridge was filled with polyethylene media system and ran 1hr per everyday and total operation time were 8.19hrs and backwashing everyday after end of operation. The operation condition of flowrate was $8.2{\sim}11.9m^3/day$ (mean $10.1m^3/day$) and surface overflow rate (SOR) based on filter surface area was $45.5{\sim}65.9m^3/m^2/day$ (mean $55.7m^3/m^2/day$). The range of PACS dosage concentration was 14.0~31.5 mg/L. As the results of operation, the range of removal efficiency of turbidity, SS were 81.0~95.8% (mean 89.5%) 81.8~99.0% (mean 91.4%), respectively. An increase of filtration basin retention time brought on increased of removal efficiency of turbidity and SS, and increase of SOR brought on decreased of removal efficiency. During the first flush in urban area, storm runoff have an high concentration of SS (200~600 mg/L) and the filtration bed becomes clogged and decreased of removal efficiency. Backwashing begins when the drainage pipe valve at the filtration tank bottom is completely open (backwashing stage 1). Backwashing stage 2 was using air bubbles and water jet washing the media for 5 mins and open the drainage valve. After backwashing stage 1, 2, 61.83~64.04%, 18.53~27.51% of SS loading was discharged from filtration tank, respectively. Discharged SS loading from effluent was 7.12~14.79% and the range of residual SS loading in fliter was 2.26~5.00%. The backwashing effects for turbidity, SS were 89.5%, 91.4%, respectively. The hydrocyclone coagulation and filtration with backwashing system, which came out to solve the problems of the costly exchange filter media, and low efficiency of removing micro particles of filter type nonpoint treatment devices, is considered as an alternative system.
The demand of packaged baby leaves has been increased for its convenient use as fresh-cut produce. This investigation was aimed to explore the effects of different sanitizers on the quality parameters of 'Tah Tasai' Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris var. narinosa) baby leaves. Thirteen days old baby leaves were harvested and washed in tap water (TW), 100 ppm chlorine solution (Cl), 2 ppm ozonated water ($O_3$), 15 ppm chlorine dioxide solution ($ClO_2$) and washing with 0.2% citric acid solution followed by 50% ethanol spray (CA+Et). The samples were then packaged in 50 ${\mu}m$ polyethylene bags and stored at $5^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. Off-odor of packaged baby leaves was not detected during storage. There was no significant difference in color parameters among the treatments. Samples treated with $O_3$ showed substantially higher electrolyte leakage throughout the storage. This treatment also rendered a higher accumulation of $CO_2$ in the packages. Samples treated with Cl and CA+Et maintained good overall visual quality with higher scores compared to that of $O_3$ and $ClO_2$. Although Cl treatment showed lower number of total aerobic count at the beginning of storage, citric acid in combination with ethanol treatment was more effective until the end of storage. The combined treatment also showed comparatively lower coliform plate count. This result indicates that citric acid wash followed by ethanol spray could be an alternative to chlorine for environment friendly sanitization of baby leaves.

One-year-old seedlings of Ginkgo biloba, potted in three different soils (nursery soil, mixed and sandy soil), were treated with simulated acid rain (pH 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0) and tap water (control, pH 6.4) during the growing seasons (1985. 4. 28 - 1985. 10. 19) to examine the effects of acid rain on growth and physiological characteristics, and the relations between seedling growth and physiological characteristics. The results obtained in this study were as follows: 1. The effects of soil types on the total, top and root dry weight per seedling were significant at 5% level, and those of the pH of the rain treated at 1% level. The total dry weight of the pH 3.0 sub-plots was the highest for nursery soil, while for mixed and sandy soils, those of the control and the pH 5.0 sub-plots were the highest, respectively. 2. The leaf surface areas of pH 2.0 sub-plots severely decreased after July, but those of other sub-plots were not affected. The correlations between growth and leaf surface area differed among soil-types, however, the highest positive correlation was found in September. 3. The injured leaf rate increased with decreasing pH levels of acid rain. Highly negative correlations between growth and injured leaf rate were found. 4. The lower the pH level of acid rain treated was, the more the chlorophyll content was measured at the beginning of treatment, and the more severely it decreased at late growing season. A negative correlations were found in August, September and Octobfer. 5. The photosynthetic ability decreased rapidly after July with decreasing pH levels. A highly positive correlation between growth and photosynthetic ability was found in August.
