carbon modified methods were used for the preconcentration and determination of copper in some real samples using the flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The copper ions was adsorbed quantitatively on the activated carbon due to their complexation with 4- amino-2, 3-dimethyl-1-phenyl-3-pyrazoline (ADMPP) or 4-(4- methoxybenzylidenimin) thiophenole (MBITP). The adsorbed copper on solid phase was eluted quantitatively using small amount of nitric acid. The influence of important parameters including pH, amount of carrier, flow rate, amount of activated carbon and type and concentration of eluting agent for obtaining maximum recovery were investigated. The methods based on ADMPP and MBITP at optimum conditions is linear over concentration range of 0.05-1.5 g mL-1 and 0.05-1.2 g mL-1 of copper with correlation coefficient of 0.9997 and 0.9994 and both detection limit of 1.4 ng mL-1, respectively. The preconcentration leads to enrichment factor of 310 and break through volume of 1550 mL for both ligands. The method has a good tolerance limit of interfering ion and a selectivity that has been successfully applied for the determination of copper content in real sample such as tap, spring, river and waste water.
Electrostatic precipitator is widely used to remove particulate matters in indoor air and industrial flue gas due to low pressure drop and high collection efficiency. However, it has a low collection efficiency for the submicrometer sized particles. Electrospraying is a potential method to increase the particle charging efficiency, which results in increased collection efficiency. Although particle charging efficiency is highly dependent upon droplet size, the effective measuring method of the droplets is still uncertain. Tap water was electrosprayed in this study, and the images of electrosprayed droplets were taken with a high speed camera coupled with several visualization methods in order to measure the droplets size. The droplet size distribution was determined by an image processing with an image-J program. As a result, a droplet measured by a laser visualization, had a half size of that by a Xenon light visualization. In addition, the experimentally measured droplet sizes were a good agreement with the predicted values suggested by $Fern{\acute{a}}ndez$ de la Mora and Loscertales(1994).

Purpose: Candida albicans can cause mucosal disease in many vulnerable patients. Also they are associated with denture-related stomatitis. Electrolyzed water is generated by electric current passed via water using various metal electrodes and has antimicrobial activity. The aim of this study was to investigate antifungal activity of electrolyzed water on C. albicans biofilm. Materials and Methods: C. albicans was cultured by sabouraud dextrose broth and F-12 nutrient medium in aerobic and 5% $CO_2$ condition to form blastoconidia (yeast) and hyphae type, respectively. For formation of C. albicans biofilm, C. albicans was cultivated on rough surface 6-well plate by using F-12 nutrient medium in $CO_2$ incubator for 48 hr. After electrolyzing tap water using various metal electrodes, the blastoconidia and hyphal type of C. albicans were treated with electrolyzed water. C. albicans formed blastoconidia and hyphae type when they were cultured by sabouraud dextrose broth and F-12 nutrient medium, respectively. Results: The electrolyzed water using palladium electrode (EWP) exhibited antifungal effect on blastoconidia of C. albicans. Also, the EWP significantly has antifungal activity against C. albicans biofilm and hyphae. In the electrolyzed water using various metal electrodes, only the EWP have antifungal activity. Conclusion: The EWP may use a gargle solution and a soaking solution for prevention of oral candidiasis and denture-related stomatitis due to antifungal activity.

Quality attributes of fresh-cut sesame leaf (Perilla frutescens var. japonica) as affected by hydrocooling and packing were investigated in terms of weight loss, respiration, vitamin C content, total chlorophyll content, microbial load and sensory properties during storage at 4 and $10^{\circ}C$. Fresh sesame leaf was trimmed and washed with cold water (1, $5^{\circ}C$) as well as tap water ($13^{\circ}C$) for 30 sec 3 times and then packaged in PP (polypropylene) film bag and PETE (polyethylene terephthalate) tray, and stored for 9 days at 4 and $10^{\circ}C$. Weight loss was decreased by washing and packing. Respiration rate was increased slowly over the storage at $4^{\circ}C$. Vitamin C content and total chlorophyll contents of sesame leaf packaged within PETE tray decreased gradually during storage. Hydrocooling and packing within PETE tray treatments resulted in approximately $1{\sim}2\;log\;CFU/g$ reduction of microbial load.

The storage quality of soybean sprouts washed with various electrolyzed waters was investigated. The washing solutions consisted of tap water (TW), sodium hypochlorite electrolyzed water (SHEW), and slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW). The number of bacteria on the soybean sprouts after 5 min of exposure to TW, SHEW, and SAEW resulted in >0.5, 2.0, and 2.0 log CFU/g reductions, respectively. At both $4^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, the number of bacteria, weight loss ratio, and b value rapidly increased, and pH and L value rapidly decreased in soybean sprouts washed with TW. Whereas, the number of bacteria, pH, weight loss ratio, and color slowly changed in the soybean sprouts washed with SHEW and SAEW. Consequently, these results indicate that washing with electrolyzed water is an effective means of maintaining the quality and enhancing the shelf-life of soybean sprouts; both SHEW and SAEW reduced bacterial growth without affecting the other properties of soybean sprouts during storage.
Hydrodynamic similarity was analyzed by employing scaling factor in three phase fluidized beds. The scaling factor was defined based on the holdups of gas, liquid and solid particles and effectivity volumetric flux of fluids between the two kinds of fluidized beds with different column diameter. The column diameter of one was 0.102 m and that of the other was 0.152 m. Filtered compressed air, tap water and glass bead of which density was 2,500 kg/$m^3$ were used as gas, liquid and solid phases, respectively. The individual phase holdups in three phase fluidized beds were determined by means of static pressure drop method. Effects of gas and liquid velocities and particle size on the scaling factors based on the holdups of each phase and effective volumetric flux of fluids were examined. The deviation of gas holdup between the two kinds of three phase fluidized beds decreased with increasing gas or liquid velocity but increased with increasing fluidized particle size. The deviation of liquid holdup between the two fluidized beds decreased with increasing gas or liquid velocity or size of fluidized solid particles. The deviation of solid holdup between the two fluidized beds increased with increasing gas velocity or particle size, however, decreased with increasing liquid velocity. The deviation of effective volumetric flux of fluids between the two fluidized beds decreased with increasing gas velocity or particle size, but increased with increasing liquid velocity. The scaling factor, which was defined in this study, could be effectively used to analyze the hydrodynamic similarity in three phase fluidized processes.

Size verification of small and large bubbles in a bubble column was investigated by employing the dynamic gas disengagement (DGD) method and dual electrical resistivity probe (DRP) method, simultancously. The holdups of large and small bubbles in the bubble column in a given operating condition were obtained by means of the DGD method by measuring the pressure drop variation in the column with a variation of time after stopping the gas input into the column. The size and frequency of bubbles were measured by the DRP method in the same operating condition, from which the bubble holdup of each range of size was obtained. The verification of size in determining the large or small bubbles was decided by comparing the holdups of large or small bubbles measured by the DGD method with that measured by the DRP method. Filtered compressed air and tap water were used as a gas and a continuous liquid medium. The diameter and height of the bubble column were 0.102 m and 1.5 m, respectively. The demarcation size between the large and the small bubbles in the bubble column was 4.0~5.0 mm; the demarcation size was about 5.0 mm when the gas velocity was in the relatively low range, but about 4.0 mm when the gas velocity was in the relatively high range, within this experimental conditions.

Total trihalomethanes (THMs), dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) that are the major disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are monitored continuously in drinking water in Seoul. Study on characteristics of DBPs is crucial to judge the safety of drinking water in Seoul. Analysis of THMs, haloacetonitriles (HANs), chloral hydrate (CH), and haloacetic acids (HAAs) was carried out in several distribution systems from January 2002 to December 2004. The concentration of THMs was 0.015 mg/L in purified water, 0.019 mg/L in tapwater by direct service, and 0.023 mg/L in tapwater through watertank, respectively. It might be due to the increased contact time with chlorine by a process of the distribution system. And the other DBPs show a tendency to increase in its concentration by a process of the distribution system. Also, in summer, the concentration of DBPs was higher than in spring and winter. It might be due to the higher temperature of water in summer. In all cases, the quantities of detected DBPs were 4-6 times lower than those of regulation limits of drinking water in Seoul. In view of these results, the tapwater in Seoul is good to drink it all the times.

Multivariate models were developed for the simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of copper (II), nickel (II) and zinc (II) in water with 1-(2-thiazolylazo)-2-naphthol as chromogenic reagent in the presence of Triton X-100. To overcome the drawback of spectral interferences, principal component regression (PCR) and partial least square (PLS) multivariate calibration approaches were applied. Performances were validated with several test sets, and their results were then compared. In general, no significant difference in analytical performance between PLS and PCR models. The root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) using three components for $Cu^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ were 0.018, 0.010, 0.011 ppm, respectively. Figures of merit such as sensitivity, analytical sensitivity, limit of detection (LOD) were also estimated. High reliability was achieved when the proposed procedure was applied to simultaneous determination of $Cu^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ in synthetic mixture and tap water.
Water of river gets great concern about its quality, which might be polluted with pollutant from various industrial plants booming along the river sides in recent years. As a first step to prevent any applciable damage due to water pollution, survey on the water quality of Keum river at Sintanjin, Maepo, Taepyongri, Kongju, Puyeo and Kanggeng, six regions was conducted during september, 1977 through august, 1978 and the results were summarized as follow: 1. There were no significant regional and monthly difference in pH, $NO_2-N$, and $NO_3-N$ of water. 2. The BOD at Puyeo, Kanggeng was 3.9 to 5.6, 5.6 to 6.0 ppm, respectively, and those values reached the limiting level for tap water sources. 3. The BOD at Maepo, where Daejeon streams meet, was found 1.9, 3.0, and 2.1 times higher than those at Sintanjin region, during september, october and november, respectvely. 4. Content of DO was $7.6{\pm}3.8ppm$ in all surveyed regions and varied with water temperature and regional difference. 5. There were found regional difference and monthly difference in water hardness, suspended solid and $NH_3-N$.
