  • This paper proposes an efficient feature extraction of the images by using independent component analysis(ICA) based on neural networks of the hybrid learning algorithm. The proposed learning algorithm is the fixed point(FP) algorithm based on Newton method and moment. The Newton method, which uses to the tangent line for estimating the root of function, is applied for fast updating the inverse mixing matrix. The moment is also applied for getting the better speed-up by restraining an oscillation due to compute the tangent line. The proposed algorithm has been applied to the 10,000 image patches of $12{\times}12$-pixel that are extracted from 13 natural images. The 144 features of $12{\times}12$-pixel and the 160 features of $16{\times}16$-pixel have been extracted from all patches, respectively. The simulation results show that the extracted features have a localized characteristics being included in the images in space, as well as in frequency and orientation. And the proposed algorithm has better performances of the learning speed than those using the conventional FP algorithm based on Newton method.

  • In this study, the impact loads on tank walls by sloshing phenomena and on a tall structure in a three-dimensional rectangular tank were predicted using multiphase flow simulations. The solver was based on the CIP/CCUP (Constraint interpolation CIP/CIP combined unified procedure) method, and the THINC-WLIC (Tangent hyperbola for interface capturing-weighted line interface calculation) scheme was used to capture the air-water interface. For the convection terms of the Navier-Stokes equations, the USCIP (Unsplit semi-lagrangian CIP) method was adopted. The results of simulations were compared with those of experiments. Overall, the comparisons were reasonably good.

  • This paper presents the process generating the 3-dimensional free f o r m hull form by using an ASMOD(Adaptive Spline Modeling of Observation Data) and a hybrid curve approximation. For example, we apply an ASMOD to the generation of a SAC(Sectiona1 Area Curve) in an initial hull form design. That is, we define SACS of real ships as B-spline curves by a hybrid curve approximation (which is the combination method of a B-spline fitting method and a genetic algorithm) and accumulate a database of control points. Then we let ASMOD learn from the correlation of principal dimensions with control points and make the ASMOD model for SAC generation. Identically, we apply an ASMOD to the generation of other hull form characteristic curves - design waterline curve, bottom tangent line, center profile line. Conclus~onally we can generate a design hull form from these hull form characteristic curves.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the structural integrity of a reactor pressure vessel subjected to the pressurized thermal shock(PTS) during the transient events, such as main steam line break(MSLB) and small break loss of coolant accident(SBLOCA). For postulated surface or subsurface cracks, variation curves of stress intensity factor are obtained by using the three different methods, including ASME section XI code anlysis, the finite element alternating method and the finite element method. From the stress intensity factor curves, the maximum allowable nil-ductility transition temperatures(RT/NDT/) are determined by the tangent criterion and the maximum criterion for various crack configurations and two initial transient events. As a result of the analysis, it is noted that axial cracks have smaller maximum allowable RT$_{NDT}$ values than same-sized circumferential cracks for both the transient events in the case of the tangent criterion. Axial cracks have smaller RT$_{NDT}$ values than same-sized circumferential cracks for MSLB and circumferential cracks have smaller values than axial cracks for SBLOCA in the case of the maximum criterion.

  • In this paper, the on-line system schemes for coordinated control system of multiple FACTS were presented to enhance the voltage stability around the metropolitan areas. In order to coordinated control system of FACTS devices, MFC on-line system calculates the optimal set point(Vref, Qrev) of FACTS devices using the coordinated control algorithm with real time network data which is transferred from SCADA/EMS system. If the system is unstable after contingencies, the new operation set-point of FACTS would be determined using bus sensitivity from tangent vector at voltage instability point. Otherwise, we would determine the new operation set-point of FACTS for considering economical operation, like as active power loss minimization using Optimal Power Flow algorithm. As the test, MFC(Multiple FACTS Coordinated control) on-line system will be installed in Korea power system.

  • PURPOSES : Since expressways in South Korea are toll roads, many trumpet type interchanges exist, resulting in the installation of loop ramps very frequently. While the travel speed of the main lane is designed to be 100-110 km/h, the structure of a loop ramp is different and is designed for a minimum speed of 40 km/h. In fact, most of the actual travel speeds measured on the ramp exceed the designated speed, which has been a major problem in traffic safety. In this research, a type of pavement marking speed-reduction treatment called the "Peripheral Transverse Line" is installed on expressway loop ramps in order to study the change of driving speeds after the installation. METHODS : To verify statistically the change, this speed-reduction treatment has been installed on the Chungju interchange and the Yeoju junction. The driving speeds before the installation were compared with driving speeds both one month and five monthsafter the installation. RESULTS : As a result, the reductions of the average driving speeds after the treatment were statistically significant. More specifically, the average driving speeds of the Chungju interchange were reduced by 7.1-7.7 % for its tangent road section, and the speeds decreased by 8.5-9.5 % for its curve section. Similarly, in the Yeoju junction, an average speed reduction of 2.9-4.8 % for its tangent section was measured, along with 3.9% long-term speed reduction for its curve section. CONCLUSIONS : Since the pavement marking speed-reduction treatment has been partially proven to be effective from this research, we expect to expand this treatment and re-confirm the effect from a long-term perspective in the future.

  • A path-switching strategy by combining the use of generalized inverse and line search is proposed. A reliable predictor for the tangent vector to bifurcation path is first computed by using the generalized inverse approach. A line search in the direction of maximum gradient of total potential at the point of intersection between the above predictor and a constant loading plane introduced in the vicinity of the detected bifurcation point is then carried out for the purpose of obtaining an improved approximation for a point on bifurcation path. With this approximation obtained, an actual point on bifurcation path is then computed through iteration on the constant loading plane.

  • It is well known that the warped product $L\;{\times}\;{_f}\;F$ of a line L and a Kaehler manifold F is an almost contact Riemannian manifold which is characterized by some tensor equations appeared in (1.7) and (1.8). In this paper we determine contact slant submanifolds tangent to the structure vector field of $L\;{\times}\;{_f}\;F$.
