A Study on the Optimization of Machining Process for Al6061 Using the AWJM (AWJM을 이용한 Al6061 절단조건 최적화에 관한 연구)

  • The AWJM(Abrasive Water-jet Machining) technology is one of the cutting technologies, which can cut various materials with 2 or 3 times of the speed of sound. In this study, processing conditions such as jet-pressure, cutting speed, orifice diameter and stand-off distance, are used by following the design of experiments with 3 levels. Al6061 material which is normally applied on the field, is applied. Through the S/N ratio analysis with measured values, the optimization value of processing conditions to minimize the surface roughness and taper value is obtained. The order of significance is as follows; jet pressure, cutting speed, abrasive mixing ratio, orifice diameter and stand-off distance. RSM(Response Surface Method) is applied to find the optimal processing conditions to minimize both the surface roughness and the taper value by using jet pressure, cutting speed and abrasive mixing ratio.

Drilling Characteristics and Modeling of Diamond Core Drilling Processes (다이아몬드 코어드릴 공정의 구멍가공 특성과 모델링)

  • Diamond core drills are applied to drill difficult-to-cut materials. This paper proposes basic understanding of ceramic drilling mechanics and characteristics of main factors affecting tool life, tool wear, cutting force, and chipping thickness. In contrast to conventional drilling, the core drilling process make deep grooves on the workpiece. One difficulty of it is the evacuation of chips from the drilled groove. As the drilling depth increases, an increased amount of chips tend to cluster together and clog the groove. Eventually severe wear develops and diamond grits are separated from the drill body. To relieve the clogging problem and to evacuate chips from the groove easily, the helical drilling process is applied for the core drilling process. To analyze drilling characteristics and derive optimal drilling conditions, tool life, tool wear, cutting force, and chipping thickness are quantified through the monitoring system and the Taguchi method. Mathematical models for the tool life and chipping thickness are derived from the response surface method. Optimal drilling database has been constructed through the experimental models.

IMPROVEMENT OF RIDE AND HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS USING MULTI-OBJECTIVE OPTIMIZATION TECHNIQUES

  • In order to reduce the time and costs of improving the performance of vehicle suspensions, the techniques for optimizing damping and air spring characteristic were proposed. A full vehicle model for a bus is constructed with a car body, front and rear suspension linkages, air springs, dampers, tires, and a steering system. An air spring and a damper are modeled with nonlinear characteristics using experimental data and a curve fitting technique. The objective function for ride quality is WRMS (Weighted RMS) of the power spectral density of the vertical acceleration at the driver's seat, middle seat and rear seat. The objective function for handling performance is the RMS (Root Mean Squares) of the roll angle, roll rate, yaw rate, and lateral acceleration at the center of gravity of a body during a lane change. The design variables are determined by damping coefficients, damping exponents and curve fitting parameters of air spring characteristic curves. The Taguchi method is used in order to investigate sensitivity of design variables. Since ride and handling performances are mutually conflicting characteristics, the validity of the developed optimum design procedure is demonstrated by comparing the trends of ride and handling performance indices with respect to the ratio of weighting factors. The global criterion method is proposed to obtain the solution of multi-objective optimization problem.

Analysis of Microstructure and Mechanical Properties According to Heat Treatment Conditions in GMAW for Al 6061-T6 Alloy (Al 6061-T6 합금의 MIG 용접 후 열처리조건에 따른 미세조직 및 기계적 물성 분석)

  • Recently, aluminum alloy has used various industry, such as automobile, shipbuilding and aircraft because of characteristics of low density and high corrosion resistance. Al 6061-T6 is heat treatment materials so it has high strength and mostly used for assembly by mechanical fastening such as a bolting and riveting. In GMA (Gas Metal Arc) welding of alloy, some defects which are hot cracking, porosity, low-mechanical properties and large heat affected zone is generated, because of high heat conductivity. It reduces mechanical properties. In this study, the major factor effected on properties are analyzed after welding in Al 6061-T6 in GMAW, then optimize heat treatment conditions. Plate of Al 6061-T6 with a thickness of 12 mm is welded in V groove and applied welding method is butt joint. Mechanical properties and microstructure are analyzed according to heat treatment condition. Tensile strength, microstructure and Hardness are evaluated. Result of research appears that Al 6061-T6 applied heat treatment show outstanding mechanical properties.

Optimization of Resistance Spot Weld Condition for Single Lap Joint of Hot Stamped 22MnB5 by Taking Heating Temperature and Heating Time into Consideration (핫스템핑 공정에서 가열온도 및 유지시간을 고려한 22MnB5의 단일겹치기 저항 점용접 조건 최적화)

  • In this study, optimization of the process parameters of the resistance spot welding of a sheet of aluminum-coated boron alloyed steel, 22MnB5, used in hot stamping has been performed by a Taguchi method to increase the strength of the weld joint. The process parameters selected were current, electrode force, and weld time. The heating temperature and heating time of 22MnB5 are considered to be noise factors. It was known that the variation in the thickness of the intermetallic compound layer between the aluminum-coated layer and the substrate, which influences on the formation of nugget, was generated due to the difference of diffusion reaction according to heating conditions. From the results of spot weld experiment, the optimum weld condition was determined to be when the current, electrode force, and weld time were 8kA, 4kN, and 18 cycles, respectively. The result of a test performed to verify the optimized weld condition showed that the tensile strength of the weld joint was over 32kN, which is considerably higher than the required strength, i.e., 23kN.

A Process Optimization of HVOF on ALBC3 by Experiments Design (실험계획법을 이용한 ALBC3에 대한 고속화염용사의 최적 공정 설계)

  • Erosion and abrasion caused by cavitation damage occur in fluid equipment, such as ships or impellers. Similarly, the equipment damage from noise and vibration can shorten its life. This study analyzed the importance of the parameter characteristics of the process optimization of HVOF (High Velocity Oxygen Fuel spraying), which is generally used in a variety of industries for enhancing the resistibility from the cavitation phenomenon. The surface of the ALBC3 substrate was coated with an amorphous powder as a filler metal according to the experimental design using the Taguchi method, and then the characteristics with each parameter were analyzed using a porosity measurement test. The optimal process conditions was a combustion pressure of 80psi, coating distance of 270mm, gun speed of 200mm/s, and powder feed rate of 25g/min as a result of the HVOF coating by applying the experimental design. The combustion pressure, coating distance and powder feed rate were more than 25% and indicated a similar contribution rate, but the contribution rate of the gun speed was 19%, which was slightly less than the others. The contribution rate with each parameter was only slightly significant. On the other hand, all four parameters were found to be important in the contribution rate aspects of the HVOF coating process.

A Study on the Design of Tolerance for Process Parameter using Decision Tree and Loss Function (의사결정나무와 손실함수를 이용한 공정파라미터 허용차 설계에 관한 연구)

  • In the manufacturing industry fields, thousands of quality characteristics are measured in a day because the systems of process have been automated through the development of computer and improvement of techniques. Also, the process has been monitored in database in real time. Particularly, the data in the design step of the process have contributed to the product that customers have required through getting useful information from the data and reflecting them to the design of product. In this study, first, characteristics and variables affecting to them in the data of the design step of the process were analyzed by decision tree to find out the relation between explanatory and target variables. Second, the tolerance of continuous variables influencing on the target variable primarily was shown by the application of algorithm of decision tree, C4.5. Finally, the target variable, loss, was calculated by a loss function of Taguchi and analyzed. In this paper, the general method that the value of continuous explanatory variables has been used intactly not to be transformed to the discrete value and new method that the value of continuous explanatory variables was divided into 3 categories were compared. As a result, first, the tolerance obtained from the new method was more effective in decreasing the target variable, loss, than general method. In addition, the tolerance levels for the continuous explanatory variables to be chosen of the major variables were calculated. In further research, a systematic method using decision tree of data mining needs to be developed in order to categorize continuous variables under various scenarios of loss function.

Optimized Design of Metal Seal Structure for a Pressure Vessel using Taguchi's Experimental Method (다구찌 실험법을 이용한 압력용기 메탈시일 구조물의 최적화 설계)

  • In this paper, the metal seal for a pressure vessel has been analyzed using the Daguchi method. This method may efficiently optimize the design parameters for a cantilever sealing device of a pressure vessel in terms of dimensions and angles. The computed results indicate that the optimized design parameters can only be drawn by sixteen experimental numbers of iterations when the Daguchi design technique has been employed. This means that the Daguchi design method is very useful for the optimization design of the curved design of the structure. Based on the computed results by the Daguchi design technique, the dimension and angle of the metal seal structure are given as $d_1=50mm,\;d_2=60mm,\;a_1=20^{\circ},\;a_2=8^{\circ},\;a_3=5^{\circ}$.

Evaluation of Uncertainty Importance Measure by Experimental Method in Fault Tree Analysis (결점나무 분석에서 실험적 방법을 이용한 불확실성 중요도 측도의 평가)

  • In a fault tree analysis, an uncertainty importance measure is often used to assess how much uncertainty of the top event probability (Q) is attributable to the uncertainty of a basic event probability ($q_i$), and thus, to identify those basic events whose uncertainties need to be reduced to effectively reduce the uncertainty of Q. For evaluating the measures suggested by many authors which assess a percentage change in the variance V of Q with respect to unit percentage change in the variance $\upsilon_i$ of $q_i$, V and ${\partial}V/{\partial}{\upsilon}_i$ need to be estimated analytically or by Monte Carlo simulation. However, it is very complicated to analytically compute V and ${\partial}V/{\partial}{\upsilon}_i$ for large-sized fault trees, and difficult to estimate them in a robust manner by Monte Carlo simulation. In this paper, we propose a method for experimentally evaluating the measure using a Taguchi orthogonal array. The proposed method is very computationally efficient compared to the method based on Monte Carlo simulation, and provides a stable uncertainty importance of each basic event.

A Study on the Diffuser Design of Exhaust Pipes for the Infra-Red Signature Reduction of Naval Ship (함정 적외선 신호 감소를 위한 폐기관의 디퓨져 설계에 관한 연구)

  • In modern naval ships, an infrared signature suppression (IRSS) system is used to reduce the metal surface temperature of the heated exhaust pipe and high-temperature exhaust gases generated from the propulsion system. Generally, the IRSS systems used in Korean naval ships consist of an eductor, mixing tube, and diffuser. The diffuser reduces the temperature of the metal surface by creating an air film due to a pressure difference between the internal gas and the external air. In this study, design variables were selected by analyzing the shapes of a diffuser designed by an advanced overseas engineering company. The characteristics of the design variables that affect the performance of the IRSS were investigated through the Taguchi experimental method. A heat flow analysis technique for IRSS systems established in previous studies was used analyze the performance of the diffuser. The performance evaluation was based on the area-averaged value of the metal surface temperature and exhaust gas temperature at the outlet of the diffuser, which are directly related to the intensity of the infrared signature. The results show that the temperature of the exhaust gas was significantly affected by changes in the diameter of the diffuser outlet, and the temperature of the diffuser's metal surface was significantly affected by changes in the number of diffuser rings.
