Challenges in cognitive radio and tactical communications include recognizing anonymously received signals and estimating parameters in a blind or semi-blind manner. In this paper, we examine this issue for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signaling. There are several parameters in OFDM signaling, and the blind receiver must extract and consider the synchronization issue. We assume that the blind receiver is aware of modulation type, OFDM, and not aware of chip duration and the length of cyclic prefix. First, we present new criteria based on kurtosis to estimate these parameters and compare their performance at different levels of additive white Gaussian noise with methods based on correlation, kurtosis, maximum likelihood, and matched filter. Then, we perform synchronization and estimate the start time based on these criteria and several new criteria in two steps: fine and coarse synchronization. Finally, in a more practical setup, we present the idea of jointly estimating the mentioned parameters and the signal start time as coarse synchronization. We compare different criteria and show that one of the proposed criteria has the highest efficiency.

Tactical communication radio systems that employ software defined radios(SDRs) have been developed for achieving high-speed data transmissions and voice communications. Such systems possess multiband and multichannel features, and can potentially replace several existing radio systems. This paper proposes a design for wideband antennas by incorporating a diplexer matching network for tactical vehicles. The proposed antenna design includes two radiators(upper and lower) and a diplexer matching network connected to the end of the feed line such that the LC matching networks are interleaved in the lower radiator and spring mount. By employing the diplexer matching network, the designed antenna can perform wideband impedance matching for the fifty ohm feed line. The designed LC networks aid in varying the effective electrical length of the antenna according to the operation frequency. The primary objective behind adjusting the electrical length is to vary the current distribution above and below the LC networks. The proposed antenna was fabricated and tested in an open site. The obtained evaluation results show that the designed antenna can achieve a relative bandwidth of 190% with a VSWR value of 3.5:1, and can attain good antenna gains over VHF and UHF bands.

The tactical mobile communication network, which comprises a part of the next-generation Tactical Information and Communication Network (TICN), provides means of communication and control for Tactical Multi-Functional Terminals (TMFT) belonging to a Mobile Subscriber Access Point (MSAP). The next-generation of MSAP is capable of constructing a backbone network via LCTR and HCTR directional antennas. At the same time, WMN modules are used to create and manage a wireless mesh backbone. When directional antennas are used in mobile environments, seamless services cannot be efficiently supported as the movement of the node prevents the angle of the antenna to constantly match. Therefore, data communication through the wireless mesh networks is required to provide direct communication between mobile MSAPs. Accordingly, mutual authentication and data encryption mechanisms are required to provide reliable data transmission in this environment. To provide efficient mutual authentication between MSAP devices, the process of verifying a certificate of the other MSAP device through its own authentication server is required. This paper proposes mutual authentication mechanisms where the MSAP requiring authentication and the MSAP that permits it initiates low-cost and efficient authentication in a distributed way. More specifically, we propose a method of applying EAP-ELS (Extensible Authentication Protocol-Transport Layer Security) in the next-generation TICN.
Analysis of combat effectiveness is required to consider the concept of tactical cooperative engagement between manned-unmanned weapon systems, in order to predict the required operational capabilities of future weapon systems that meets the concept of 'effect-based synchronized operations.' However, analytical methods such as mathematical and statistical models make it difficult to analyze the effects of complex systems under nonlinear warfare. In this paper, we propose a combat simulation model that can simulate the concept of cooperative engagement between manned-unmanned combat entities based on wireless communications. First, we model unmanned combat entities, e.g., unmanned ground vehicles and drones, and manned combat entities, e.g., combatants and artillery, considering the capabilities required by the future ground system. We also simulate tactical behavior in which all entities perform their mission while sharing battlefield situation information through wireless communications. Finally we explore the feasibility of the proposed model by analyzing combat effectiveness such as target acquisition rate, remote control success rate, reconnaissance lead time, survival rate, and enemy's loss rate under a small-unit armor reconnaissance scenario. The proposed model is expected to be used in war-game combat experiments as well as analysis of the effects of manned-unmanned ground weapons.

Military communications for future warfare have limited resources but highly requirements. MANET has a lot of advantages for future military network due to easily deploying without infrastructure and supporting dynamic topology in restricted environments. But, one of the biggest issues for MANET is difficulty of transmitting data due to link failure in dynamic topology. Content Centric Networking is a future Internet paradigm which solves various IP network problem. In this paper, we propose a future military communication routing scheme using CCN in military tactical MANET. Simulation results show our scheme gets lower control message overhead and faster data downloads as number of node increases and mobile speed increases than other two schemes.

In modern society, as technology has advanced and human life area has expanded, there has been an increasing demand for high-quality voice and video communications services without restrictions on time and place. In response to this demand, satellite communications systems that provide a wide range of communications and that offer multiple access are evolving day by day. In satellite communications systems such as Digital Video Broadcasting - Return Channel Via Satellite (DVB-RCS) and Warfighter Information Network-Tactical (WIN-T), the multi-frequency time division multiple access (MF-TDMA) demand assigned multiple access (DAMA) scheme is used for efficient resource allocation. In this scheme, since the satellite terminals periodically request resources from the network controller, and the network controller dynamically allocates resources, it is necessary to arrange resource allocation information from time to time. Shortening of the alignment time is a more important factor in a satellite communications system in which a long transmission delay occurs due to long-distance transmission and reception. In this paper, we propose a sorting algorithm variable-selection scheme that shortens the sorting time by cross-selecting the sorting algorithm based on a threshold value, while setting the number of frames in the MF-TDMA DAMA satellite communications system as the threshold value.

Unmanned robot system has become a significant part of network centric warfare. Unnlike the commercial wireless system, however, it is tricky to provide reliable communication in the harsh environment: tactical and military communication. Therefore, it needs to be considered when the base station and mobile has poor communication channel. In this paper, we proposed an efficient operating algorithm for unammned robot system with ensuring communication survivability in the harsh environment. From the simulation, we adopted the SUI channel suitable for domestic mountainous area and open terrain with Rician factor K.

A key difference between a tactical military and commercial satcom system is that the military system is expected to provide a service in the presence of ECM threats such as jamming. In this paper, we analyzed the three different type of link system applicable to the military satellite and directly compared to each system in order to find system performance according to the maximum jammer power. For the analysis, we modeled and simulated the SHF satellite system based on uplink jamming. From the results, it is found for each different type of link the maximum jammer power that can be tolerated with link operating at its suggested nominal rate. Also, we studied to the survivability level against the jamming condition through the performance comparison in shipborne and portable terminal consistent with frequency.

Link-16 is a up-to-date tactical data link used in the armed forces of U.S. and NATO. In order to guarantee the required capabilities of anti-jamming and low probability of detection, Link-16 uses the techniques of frequency hopping and spreading code etc. In this paper, under Nakagami fading channels, we ananlyze the symbol error rates (SERs) of JTIDS/Link-16-type waveform based on both the single- and double-pulse schemes by considering the partial band noise jamming and the pulse jamming models, respectively.

In this paper, we investigate MSAP-TMFT in TICN systems that will be future NCW-based tactical networks. Although MSAP-TMFT implements the WiBro technology, we propose to design a NRC(NAT Relay Cell) that functions as a relay station and at the same time as a base station in combat environments. NRCs support extension of communication distance, increased data rate, efficient radio resource management, and survavibility of combat networks. From simulation results, we show that NRCs improve the efficacy of radio resource management and system throughput compared to the legacy systems.
