  • In this research, the study of the thermoelastic flexural analysis of silicon carbide/Aluminum graded (FG) sandwich 2D uniform structure (plate) under harmonic sinusoidal temperature load over time is presented. The plate is modeled using a simple two dimensional integral shear deformation plate theory. The current formulation contains an integral terms whose aim is to reduce a number of variables compared to others similar solutions and therefore minimize the computation time. The transverse shear stresses vary according to parabolic distribution and vanish at the free surfaces of the structure without any use of correction factors. The external load is applied on the upper face and varying in the thickness of the plates. The structure is supposed to be composed of "three layers" and resting on nonlinear visco-Pasternak's-foundations. The governing equations of the system are deduced and solved via Hamilton's principle and general solution. The computed results are compared with those existing in the literature to validate the current formulation. The impacts of the parameters (material index, temperature exponent, geometry ratio, time, top/bottom temperature ratio, elastic foundation type, and damping coefficient) on the dynamic flexural response are studied.

  • To avoid irregularities in buildings, design codes worldwide have introduced detailed guidelines for their check and rectification. However, the criteria used to define and identify each of the plan and vertical irregularities are specific and may vary between codes of different countries, thus making their implementation difficult. This short communication paper proposes a novel approach for quantifying different types of structural irregularities using a common parameter named as unified identification factor, which is exclusively defined for the columns based on their axial loads and tributary areas. The calculation of the identification factor is demonstrated through the analysis of rectangular and circular reinforced concrete models using ETABS v18.0.2, which are further modified to generate plan irregular (torsional irregularity, cut-out in floor slab and non-parallel lateral force system) and vertical irregular (mass irregularity, vertical geometric irregularity and floating columns) models. The identification factor is calculated for all the columns of a building and the range within which the value lies is identified. The results indicate that the range will be very wide for an irregular building when compared to that with a regular configuration, thus implying a strong correlation of the identification factor with the structural irregularity. Further, the identification factor is compared for different columns within a floor and between floors for each building model. The findings suggest that the value will be abnormally high or low for a column in the vicinity of an irregularity. The proposed factor could thus be used in the preliminary structural design phase, so as to eliminate the complications that might arise due to the geometry of the structure when subjected to lateral loads. The unified approach could also be incorporated in future revisions of codes, as a replacement for the numerous criteria currently used for classifying different types of irregularities.

  • Emulsion polymerization of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (OMCTS) was conducted under ultrasonic irradiation. Two sources of ultrasound with different intensities and frequencies of 20 KHz and 40 KHz were used for horn and bath type reactor, respectively. A combined process of horn and bath was also investigated. The effectiveness of the reaction systems was investigated by measuring conversion as well as intrinsic viscosity of the products. The influence of reaction temperature and sonication time on the progress of sonochemical polymerization was examined. It was found that conversion of greater than 80% and high viscosity were achieved within a few minutes of sonication in a horn type reactor, however, conversion and viscosity showed maximum values depending upon the sonication time. In a bath type reactor where a relatively weak intensity was maintained, longer duration time of more than one hour of sonication was required to reach a high level of conversion and viscosity. Compared with the horn type system, the conversion and viscosity in the bath type reactor were increased along with the sonication time. When the polymerization was carried out in a combined system of horn and bath, the evolution of conversion and molecular weight was quite different from the other cases. For the given geometry of reaction system, acoustic analysis using a commercial software was carried out and the results were correlated with experimental observation.

  • U shape multitube heat exchanger was equipped in the flue to recover the exhaust heat from the boiler system. The fluids of the exhaust heat recovery equipment were the flue gas as the hot fluid, and the water as the cold fluid. The flow geometry of the fluids was cross flow - two pass, the hot fluid being mixed and the cold fluid unmixed. The results of the theoretical and the experimental analysis and the economic evaluation are summarized as follows. 1) The heat exchanger effectiveness and the temperature efficiency of the hot fluid were about 35% when the fuel consumption rate was 140 - 150 L/15min. The temperature efficiency for the cold fluid ranged from 3.0% to 4.5%. The insulation efficiency ranged from 85% to 98%, which was better than the KS air preheater insulation efficiency of 90%. 2) The relationship between the fuel consumption rate, F, and the outlet temperature, $T_{h2}$, of the flue gas from the heat exchanger was $T_{h2}$ = 0.927F + 110. In order to prevent the low temperature corrosion from the coagulation of $SO_3$, it is necessary to maintain the fuel consumption rate above 82 L/15min. 3) The ratio of the exhaust heat from the boiler system to the total energy consumption was about 14.5%. With the installation of the exhaust heat recovery equipment, the energy recovery ratio to the exhaust heat was about 25%. Accordingly, about 3.6% of the total fuel consumption was estimated to be saved. 4) Economic analysis indicated that the installation of the exhaust heat recovery equipment was feasible to save the energy, because the capital reocvery period was only 10 months when the fuel consumption rate was 80 L/15min. 4 months when it was 160 L/15min. 5) Based on the theoretical and the experimental analysis, it was estimated to save the energy of about 18 million Won per year, if four heat exchangers are installed in a factory. 6) A further study is recommended to identify the relationship among the flow rate of the exhaust gas, the size of the heat exchanger and the capacity of the air preheater. For a maximum heat recovery from the exhaust gas an automatic control system is required to control the flow rate of the cold fluid depending on the boiler load.

  • The sound signal radiated from an underwater source is received by the hydrophone of the system, including multi-path time-delay and multi-path signal by sea surface and bottom reflection. The system using a time-delay between received signals for the source localization shows performance degradation due to incoherence by the multi-path propagation environment and the disturbance of a marine environment. Various types of array and signal processing have been used for robust source range and bearing estimation in this environment. In this paper, we use a line array composed of doublet array and an estimated time-delay correction method for robust localization performance in a multi-path propagation environment. Three doublet arrays are located on the same line, and the time-delay between signals received on each doublet array is estimated in a two-step procedure. The estimated time-delay value is obtained by the cross-correlation function and corrected by the interaction formula between the center-frequency of received signal and the geometry of the array with respect to aperture. By this proposed procedure, the range and bearing of source from array were calculated. In order to confirm the validity of the proposed method and array, we simulated localization and estimation using the Monte-Carlo method.

  • GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) Position Accuracy depends on pseudo-range measurement and DOP (Dilution Of Precision) which indicates about navigation satellite geometry. Pseudo-Range has many error sources such as satellite clock, orbit, ionosphere, troposphere, multipath and so on. For the improvement of the accuracy, user can use corrected pseudo-range in DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System), which is one of the relative positioning methods. But, stationary station is needed in relative positioning. In case of DOP, Signal reception environment is important. If receiver sets in the center of city, it could be interrupted reception by buildings. This environment leads to decrease the number of visible satellites and to increase DOP. This paper proposes the concept of GNSS positioning with virtual satellites which have usable VRM (Virtual Range Measurement). Via virtual satellites and VRM, users could get an accurate position. Especially referred virtual satellites constellation has an effect on vertical error.

  • The intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) with a multileaf collimator (MLC) requires the conversion of a radiation fluence map into a leaf sequence file that controls the movement of the MLC during radiation treatment of patients. Patient dose verification is clinically one of the most important parts in the treatment delivery of the radiation therapy. The three dimensional (3D) reconstruction of dose distribution delivered to the target helps to verify patient dose and to determine the physical characteristics of beams used in IMRT. A new method is presented for the pretreatment dosimetric verification of two dimensional distributions of photon intensity by means of Beam Intensity Scanner System (BISS) as a radiation detector with a custom-made software for dose calculation of fluorescence signals from scintillator. The scintillator is used to produce fluorescence from the irradiation of 6MV photons on a Varian Clinac 21EX. The BISS reproduces 3D- relative dose distribution from the digitized fluoroscopic signals obtained by digital video camera-based scintillator(DVCS) device in the IMRT. For the intensity modulated beams (IMBs), the calculations of absorbed dose are performed in absolute beam fluence profiles which are used for calculation of the patient dose distribution. The 3D-dose profiles of the IMBs with the BISS were demonstrated by relative measurements of photon beams and shown good agreement with radiographic film. The mechanical and dosimetric properties of the collimating of dynamic and/or step MLC system alter the generated intensity. This is mostly due to leaf transmission, leaf penumbra and geometry of leaves. The variations of output according to the multileaf opening during the irradiation need to be accounted for as well. These phenomena result in a fluence distribution that can be substantially different from the initial and calculative intensity modulation and therefore, should be taken into account by the treatment planning for accurate dose calculations delivered to the target volume in IMRT.

  • Recently, lots of interests have been concentrated on the scrubber system that abates waste gases produced from semiconductor manufacturing processes. An effective design of the thermal decomposition reactor inside a scrubber system is significantly important since it is directly related to the removal performance of pollutants and overall stabilities. In the present study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was conducted to figure out the thermal and flow characteristics inside the reactor of wet scrubber. In order to verify the numerical method, the temperature at several monitoring points was compared to that of experimental results. Average error rates of 1.27~2.27% between both the results were achieved, and numerical results of the temperature distribution were in good agreement with the experimental data. By using the validated numerical method, the effect of the reactor geometry on the heat transfer rate was also taken into consideration. From the result, it was observed that the flow and temperature uniformity were significantly improved. Overall, our current study could provide useful information to identify the fluid behavior and thermal performance for various scrubber systems.

  • Slot coating has been widely spread in photo resist coating on glass for flat display monitor. High quality of coating is required as high quality of image in display is needed. Coating quality in the slot coating is divided into nozzle direction quality and machine direction quality. Nozzle direction quality is related to flow uniformity inside the die whereas machine direction quality is related to die lip design and operational conditions. In this study coating uniformity in the machine direction of slot coating has been investigated through computer simulation. Die lip angle and die lip length were considered as outside die geometry and coating speed was considered as operational condition. Coating behavior has been analyzed and coating quality has been evaluated through computer simulation. Coating thickness decreased and coating uniformity increased as coating speed increased. However, the stability of meniscus formation was reduced and subsequently coating stability was reduced as coating speed increased. Coating thickness deviation decreased as die lip angle increased in down stream die. Coating thickness decreased and time to reaching steady state increased as increased die lip length in down stream die.
