  • The 1,3-bis(4-aminoaryl)squaraines showed colour change behaviour, they were found to undergo reduction with sodium borohydride in solution to give colourless leuco compounds, which oxidised readily in air back to the coloured squaraine dye. We have shown that oxidation of the parent leuco-squaraines gives the neutral squaraine system. Initial observations indicated that the derivatives gave new long-wavelength absorbing chromophores, and It is interesting to note that the onidation of the leuco squaraines did initially produce a species absorbing at longer wavelengths than the parent squaraine dye. This colour-change redox behaviour has potential in the area of peroxidase-based bioassays and artificial camouflage.

  • In this paper, we propose a range image segmentation algorithm using robust regression. We derive a least $\kappa$th-order square (LKS) method by generalizing the least median of squares (LMedS) method and compare it with the conventional robust regressions. The LKS is robuster against outliers than the LMedS and shows performance similar to the residual consensus (RESC). The RESC uses the predetermined number of sorted residuals, whereas the LKS uses an adaptive parameter determined by given observations rather than the a priori knowledge. Computer simulation with synthetic and real range images shows that the proposed LKS algorithm gives better performance than the conventional ones.

  • Insulin stimulates glucose uptake in muscle and adipose cells primarily by recruiting GLUT4 from an intracellular storage pool to the plasma membrane. Dysfunction of this process known as insulin resistance causes hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes and obesity. Thus the understanding of the mechanisms underlying this process at the molecular level may give an insight into the prevention and treatment of these health problems. GLUT4 in rat adipocytes, for example, constantly recycles between the cells surface and an intracellular pool by endocytosis and exocytosis, each of which is regulated by an insulin-sensitive and GLUT4-selective sorting mechanism. Our working hypothesis has been that this sorting mechanism includes a specific interaction of a cytosolic protein with the GLUT4 cytoplasmic domain. Indeed, a synthetic peptide of the C-terminal cytoplasmic domain of GLUT4 induces an insulin-like GLUT4 recruitment when introduced in rat adipocytes. Relevance of these observations to a novel euglycemic drug design is discussed.

  • There are three plausible bioconversion pathways in biodegradation mechanism of capsaicinoids; first, side chain degradation through $\omega$-hydroxylation and $\beta$-oxidation, secondly, aromatic ring hydroxylation, and lastly, hydrolysis on the acidaraide linkage. In microbes, it was reported that capsaicin and its synthetic, analog, nonoylvanillylamide(NVA), could be metabolized to N-vanillylcarbamoylbutyric acid via $\omega$-hydroxylation and consecutive $\beta$-oxidations by Aspergillus niger. In order to broaden the scope of microbial degradation of capsaicinoids, over thirty strains of various fungi including Aspergillus, Penicillum, Mycotypha, Gliocladium, Paecilomyces, Byssoclamys, Conidiobolus, Thamnidium, and Entomophthora. It was observed that almost all the strains examined oxidized, the side chain of capsaicids as A. niger did. These observations strongly support the notion that side chain degradation is the most dominant pathway in the microbial degradation of capsaicinoids.

  • The JERS-1 is an Earth Resources Satellite launched by NASDA (Natinal Space Development Agency) of Japan, in February in 1992 and has two sensors; SAR(L-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar) and OPS (SWIR and VNIR radiometers). In this research note, the basic properties and data characteristics of the SAR data are summarized based on the observations made on the data sets received for the Nahanni Canadian test site, Northwest Territories. The JERS-1 SAR data quality. including the spatial resolution of the data, is, in general, excellent for most geological applications.

  • In this study, we developed the Soil Moisture Data Assimilation (SMDA) scheme to extract Effective Soil Characteristics-ESC (Sand, Silt, Clay %) from MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) products. The SMDA scheme was applied to the MODIS-based Soil Moisture (SM) data during the summer (July to September) period. Then the ESC and soil erosion factors (K) were predicted, respectively. Several numerical experiments were conducted to test the performance of SMDA at the study sites under the synthetic and field validation conditions. In the synthetic experiment, the estimated soil moistures values(R: >0.990 and RMSE: <0.005) were identified well with the synthetic observations. The field validation results at the Bangdongri and Chungmicheon sites were also comparable to the TDR-based measurements with the statistics (R: 0.772/0.000 and RMSE: 0.065/0.000). The estimated ESC values were also matched well with the measurements for the synthetic and field validation conditions. Then we tested the SMDA scheme to extract the ESC from the MODIS-based soil moisture products. Although uncertainties exist in the results, the estimated soil moisture and ESC based on the SMDA were comparable to the measurements. Overall, the K factors were similarly distributed based on the derived ESC. Also, the K factors in the mountainous regions were higher than those of the relatively flat areas. Thus, the newly developed SMDA scheme can be useful to estimate spatially and temporally-distributed soil erosion and establish soil erosion management plans.

  • This study was to understand the components that influence preservice elementary teachers' mental models about 'astronomical phenomena' such as the Seasons of the year, and the Lunar Phases of the month. We selected university of education students among whom 23 were in the second you. The data collected from the paper-pencil test and individual interview with students. The results of this study show that the students had apparent synthetic Mental models, and that the distance theory, and occultation theory had most important effects on their Mental Models. It can be said that preservice elementary teachers' initial mental models of the' astronomical phenomenon' have their origin in their belief sets (specific theory) related to 'astronomical phenomenon', on the basis of which they can interpret their observations and cultural information with the constraints of a naive framework of physics. The structures and possible sources of their mental models for overcoming these synthetic mental models were also discussed.

  • Rainfall-runoff models are calibrated and validated by using a same data set such as observations. The past climate change effects the present rainfall pattern and also will effect on the future. To predict rainfall-runoff more preciously we have to consider the climate change pattern in the past, present and the future time. Thus, in this study, the climate change represents changes in mean precipitation and standard deviation in different patterns. In some river basins, there is no enough length of data for the analysis. Therefore, we have to generate the synthetic data using proper distribution for calculation of precipitation based on the observed data. In this study, Kajiyama model is used to analyze the runoff in the dry and the wet period, separately. Mean and standard deviation are used for generating precipitation from the gamma distribution. Twenty hypothetical scenarios are considered to show the climate change conditions. The mean precipitation are changed by -20%, -10%, 0%, +10% and +20% for the data generation with keeping the standard deviation constant in the wet and the dry period respectively. Similarly, the standard deviations of precipitation are changed by -20%, -10%, 0%, +10% and +20% keeping the mean value of precipitation constant for the wet and the dry period sequentially. In the wet period, when the standard deviation value varies then the mean NSE ratio is more fluctuate rather than the dry period. On the other hand, the mean NSE ratio in some extent is more fluctuate in the wet period and sometimes in the dry period, if the mean value of precipitation varies while keeping the standard deviation constant.

  • Simultaneous inversion of first-arrivals of local earthquakes recorded by the Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) seismograph network from 1991 to 1998 is made to derive 1D crustal velocity structure of the Korean peninsula. Twenty-nine events with 178 observations are used in the inversion. Average crustal P-wave velocity turns out to be about 6.3 km/sec, and crustal thickness and upper mantle P-wave velocity are estimated as 33 km and 7.9 km/sec, respectively. Results of inversion indicate the possibility of the low velocity layer in the lower crust. Joint inversion is applied to estimate hypocenters, station delays, and velocities simultaneously. Relative station corrections for 11 stations range from zero to about 1.2 sec. Analysis of the synthetic data shows that estimates of hypocenter locations and station corrections as well as averaged crustal structure are reliable for the given data set..

  • The aim of this study was to understand the components that influence the mental models of preservice elementary teachers on the astronomical phenomena of seasons of the year and lunar phases of the month. For this, participants were selected from a university of education. Data was collected from a paper-pencil test and individual interviews with the participants. The results of this study showed that the preservice teachers had apparent synthetic mental models, and that the 'Distance Theory' and 'Occlusion Theory' had the greatest effect on their mental models. Furthermore, it was found that preservice elementary teachers' initial mental models of 'astronomical phenomenon' had their origin in personal belief sets (specific theory) related to 'astronomical phenomenon'. It was on these belief sets that they interpreted their observations and cultural information with the constraints of a naive framework of physics. The structures and possible sources for overcoming these synthetic mental models were also discussed in this paper. Lastly, implications for preservice elementary teacher education were presented.
