  • The cement-based composites have relatively low tensile strength and toughness. The fiber addition is one of the most important ways of increasing the toughness of concrete. The steel fibers have been used conventionally in the shotcrete of tunnel lining. Recently, the structural synthetic fibers were developed and used frequently in some actual tunnel shotcreting in foreign countries. Now types of synthetic fibers have been developed in this study. The purpose of this study is to explore the strength and toughness characteristic of the concrete reinforced with synthetic fibers developed in this study. The result were compared with those of steel fiber reinforced concrete. It is seen that the performance of synthetic fiber reinforced concrete is good as much as that of steel fiber reinforced concrete, while the synthetic fibers have advantages in corrsion resistance and economy.

  • In this paper, hybrid fibers including high elastic modulus steel fiber and low elastic modulus synthetic macro-fiber (HPP) as two elements were used as reinforcement materials in concrete. The flexural toughness, flexural impact and fracture performance of the composites were investigated systematically. Flexural impact strength was analyzed with statistic analyses method; based on ASTM and JSCE method, an improved flexural toughness evaluating method suitable for concrete with synthetic macro-fiber was proposed herein. The experimental results showed that when the total fiber volume fractions ($V_f^a$) were kept as a constant ($V_f^a=1.5%$), compared with single type of steel or HPP fibers, hybrid fibers can significantly improve the toughness, flexural impact life and fracture properties of concrete. Relative residual strength RSI', impact ductile index ${\lambda}$ and fracture energy $G_F$ of concrete combined with hybrid fibers were respectively 66-80%, 5-12 and 121-137 N/m, which indicated that the synergistic effects (or combined effects) between steel fiber and synthetic macro-fiber were good.

  • This paper is to know the possibility of coloration of synthetic fibers with loess. Fabrics woven with polyester, nylon, and acrylic fibers were dyed by a dip-pad operation with a laboratory mangle. Drying, curing at 180$^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes and washing were followed. Effect of curing after drying were investigated in terms of K/S values and SEM microphotographes. Reddish-yellow(a:75.13, B:15.14, ${\Delta}$E:45.31) colored fabric ascertain possibility of coloration of synthetic fibers with loess. Acrylic fiber shows highest dye uptake of the three kinds of fibers and fastness increases by curing after drying.

  • Recently in abroad, structural synthetic fiber developed, has been studied extensively as a substitute for steel fiber due to its properties such as corrosion-resistance, low density, good pumping, and in-place safety, etc. In this study, we conducted pull-out test, for seven different geometries of structural synthetic fibers and obtained optimum geometry for structural synthetic fiber which fully utilizes matrix anchoring without revealing fiber fracturing. According to pull-out test results, it was found that crimped type structural synthetic fiber give significant improvement in the interface toughness(roll-out enemy) and pull-out load.

  • Penetration and health effect of fibers was related with their diameters and length. The purpose of this study is to characterize and compare the diameter and length of airborne man-made mineral fibers(MMMF) or synthetic vitreous fibers in the related industries. The average fiber length of the continuous filament glass, rock wool, refractory ceramic, and glass wool fibers production industries approximately 27, 28, 35, $50-105{\mu}m$. Airborne glass fibers were longest in all the type of MMMFs. The average diameters of airborne fibers generated from refractory ceramic, rock wool, glass wool, continuous filament glass fibers production industries were approximately 1.0, 1.6, 1.5-4 and $10{\mu}m$, respectively. The percentages of respirable fibers(<$3{\mu}m$) were 94% for RCFs, 73% for rock wool fibers, 61.0% for glass fibers, and 1.6% for filament glass fibers. The length of glass fibers were the longest in all types of fibers, and length of the others were similar. The refractory ceramic fibers were smallest in diameters and highest in fraction of respirable fibers.

  • The brittleness of concrete can be overcome by fiber reinforcement that controls the crack mechanisms of concrete. Corrosion-related durability issues can be prevented by synthetic fibers (SFs), while macro synthetic fibers have proven to be particularly effective to provide ductility and toughness after cracks. This experimental study has been performed to investigate the comparative flexural and mechanical behavior of four different macro-synthetic fiber-reinforced concretes (SFRCs). Two polyamide fibers (SF1 and SF2) with different aspect ratios and two different polypropylene fiber types (SF3 and SF4) were used in production of SFRCs. Four different SFRCs and reference concrete were compared for their influences on the toughness, compressive strength, elastic modulus, flexural strength, residual strength and splitting tensile strength. The outcomes of the study reveal that the flowability of reference mixture decreases after addition of SFs and the air voids of all SFRC mixtures increased with the addition of macro-synthetic fibers except SFRC2 mixture whose air content is the same as the reference mixture. The results also revealed that with the inclusion of SFs, 11.34% reduction in the cube compressive strength was noted for SFRC4 based on that of reference specimens and both reference concrete and SFRC exhibited nearly similar cylindrical compressive strength. Results illustrated that SFRC1 and SFRC4 mixtures consistently provide the highest and lowest flexural toughness values of 36.4 joule and 27.7 joule respectively. The toughness values of SFRC3 and SFRC4 are very near to each other.

  • A strain-hardening highly ductile composite based on an alkali-activated slag binder and synthetic fibers is a promising construction material due to its excellent tensile behavior and owing to the ecofriendly characteristics of its binder. This study investigated the effect of different types of synthetic fibers and water-to-binder ratios on the compressive strength and tensile behavior of slag-based cementless composites. Alkali-activated slag was used as a binder and water-to-binder ratios of 0.35, 0.45, and 0.55 were considered. Three types of fibers, polypropylene fiber, polyethylene (PE) fiber, and polyparaphenylene-benzobisethiazole (PBO) fiber, were used as reinforcing fibers, and compression and uniaxial tension tests were performed. The test results showed that the PE fiber series composites exhibited superior tensile behavior in terms of the tensile strain capacity and crack patterns while PBO fiber series composites had high tensile strength levels and tight crack widths and spacing distances.

  • Exhaustion increase using cationic dyes on polyamide fibers are not easy work due to the limited amounts of the functional end groups(-COOH) in the substrates. Therefore, to enhance dye exhaustion, polyamide fibers are required to be modified onto desired surface properties of the fibers using anionic bridging agent. In this study, synthetic tanning agent for pre-treatment finishing and cationic dye(berberine chloride) for dyeing of polyamide fibers were used. For surface modification, polyamide fibers were pre-treated with synthetic tanning agent at various concentrations and temperatures. The increased concentration and temperatures of synthetic tanning agents had resulted in exhaustion increase. The modified polyamide substrates skewed increased cationic dyeing exhaustions and the corresponding dyeing results from treated samples represented higher exhaustion properties than those of non-treated counterpart. The increased dyeing effects of cationic dye can be attributed to the supplied ionic interaction and electrostatic attraction sites on the surface of polyamide substrates.

  • Fiber reinforced concrete has been used for tunnel lining and rehabilitation of old structures. Recently, structural synthetic fiber was developed to overcome the corrosive properties of steel fibers. Fibers play a role to increase the tensile and cracking resistance of concrete structures. The Post cracking behavior must be clarified to predict cracking resistance of fiber reinforced concrete. The purpose of the present study is to develop a realistic analysis method for post cracking behavior of synthetic fiber reinforced concrete members.

  • In one dyeing system of silk/synthetic blend fabrics (polyester, nylon, acetate) with acid dyes/disperse dyes, dyeability and desorptibility of disperse dyes on silk fabric and transfer from dyed silk fabrics to synthetic fabrics by color difference were examined. When silk dyed with C.I. Disperse Red 19 and C.I. Disperse Red 60 at 10$0^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes, color difference of dyed silk were $\Delta$E=56.72, $\Delta$E=47.65 for blank silk, respectively. The desorption rate of the dyed silks were measured in boiling bath with and without dye-free synthetic fibers. The desorption rate of dyed silk was effected by affinity of synthetic fabrics contained. When silk dyed with Red 19 and Red 60 was reduced at 10$0^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes, the decolouration rates of dyed silk were 75% and 40%, respecdtively.
