Purpose: The patient's perspective in the assessment of quality of care has become increasingly important. The purpose of this paper was to introduce the concept of 'QUality Of care Through patient's Eyes (QUOTE)', to analyze the papers using QUOTE through an integrative review method, and to present the attributes of the QUOTE evaluation. Methods: Data were collected from electronic databases. Inclusion criteria were publication in English from 1997 to 2013, as a peer-reviewed research article, with an empirical study focused on QUOTE. Thirty two papers met the criteria and were analyzed. Results: QUOTE had been applied to various groups of patients such as those with various diseases since 1997 in the Netherlands. Four themes were retrieved from synthetic analysis of the thirty-two papers using QUOTE; 1) acceptance of individuation of the patient and family, 2) evaluation of diverse nurses' competencies, 3) evaluation of quality of nursing environments, and 4) participation of patient in the whole process of evaluation. Conclusion: The strengths of QUOTE are that it attempts to overcome the conceptual and methodological problems associated with evaluation of quality of care. Our results imply that QUOTE evaluation could be an effective strategy to improve care of patients in clinical setting.

The convergence and consilience in education (hereafter, interdisciplinary education) is receiving great attention from societies. This study aims to investigate the works of scientists and artists who have intended to combine science with the arts in the modern era, to take into account the socio-philosophical setbacks during the period, and to suggest pedagogical implications of science education as interdisciplinary education. The concept of interdisciplinary education stems from Plato's thought, idea, as a comprehensive and invariant truth. The renaissance, full of enrichment about scientific achievement, was based on Neo-Platonism pursuing holistic-synthetic approach. During the time, scientists presented in this study tried to find comprehensive principles and borrow useful method from the arts. In such a context, scientists not only made use of the arts for expression of scientific knowledge, but also drew conclusion by analogical reasoning between science and the arts. Artists, as well, relied upon anatomy and optics especially, to elaborate linear perspective and even developed their own scientific knowledge through personal experience. Hence, contemporary science education should encourage students to hold a holistic viewpoint about science and the arts, articulate explicit goals and outcomes as interdisciplinary education, implement meta-disciplinary instruction about science and the arts, and develop assessment framework for collaborative learning. There may be good examples for inter-disciplinary education as listed: illustrating scientific ideas through the arts and vice versa, organizing collaborative works and evaluations criteria for them, and stressing problem solving on a daily basis.
Veterinary drugs have been used to prevent livestock diseases for many years. In spite of having advantages, sometimes indiscriminate application, overdose and abuse may cause risk for human. Therefore, management and risk assessment of veterinary drugs become essential to ensure food safety. So the National Veterinary Research & Quarantine Service (NVRQS) impose on registration for use of veterinary drugs also Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) fixed the maximum residue limits (MRLs) for veterinary drugs in food. Basically, KFDA set MRLs based on the veterinary drugs residual data. Moreover, KFDA estimates the theoretical maximum daily intake (TMDI) with food consumption data and population mean body weight. Recently, 116 veterinary drug MRLs including banned veterinary drugs have been established and other 32 veterinary drugs MRLs will be established within 2009. In 2010, MRLs among antibiotics and synthetic antibacterial agents in livestock fishery products (including milk and eggs) and honey (including royal jelly and propolis) which have not been set in Korea Food Code and Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) will be regulated as uniform limit (0.03 mg/kg). In future, veterinary drugs will be controlled strictly to strengthen public health by improving analytical method.
Background: Buprenorphine, a new synthetic thebaine derivative, is a partial agonist of the opioid $\mu$-receptor with high receptor affinity, great lipid solubility, and slow rate of opiate receptor association and dissociation. Continuous epidural infusion of opioid can possibly produced undesirable effects, such as respiratory depression, pruritus, etc, in spite of effective postoperative analgesia. Methods: The present study was undertaken to compare the analgesic properties and side effects of continuous epidural infusion of buprenorphine combined with bupivacaine, and morphine combined with bupivacaine in 90 patients following elective gynecologic lower abdominal surgery. At the end of surgery, the initial bolus doses were 3 mg morphine (M group), 0.15 mg buprenorphine (0.15B group), 0.3 mg buprenorphine (0.3B group) combined with 0.25% bupivacaine 10ml, and subsequent continuous infusion doses were 6 mg morphine plus 0.125% bupivacine 100 ml (M group) and 0.6mg buprenorphine plus 0.125% bupivacaine 100 ml (0.15B, 0.3B, group) during 48 hours. The assessment of analgesic efficacy and side effects were made at arrival of recovery room, 1 hr, 4 hr, 8 hr, 24 hr, 36 hr, and 48 hr after the epidural injection. Results: The pain score during 48 hours was significantly higher in the 0.15B group than in the M group and 0.3B group (P<0.05), and the number of patients requiring additional analgesics was significantly higher in the 0.15B group than in the M group and 0.3B group (P<0.05). Signs of respiratory depression were not noted, and the incidence of pruritus, nausea, and vomiting was slightly lower in the 0.15B group and 0.3B group than in the M group, and the incidence of sedation and urinary retention was similar in three group. The subjective rating of satisfaction was better in the 0.3B group than in the M group and 0.15B group (P<0.05). Conclusion: The above results suggest that continuous epidural infusion of buprenorphine combined with low-dose bupivacaine is an advisable method of postoperative analgesia.
BACKGROUND: Inappropriate discharge of wastewaters and industrial effluents are becoming detrimental to the aquatic environment. The presence of toxic substances on wastewaters can be detected by physicochemical and biological methods. However, physicochemical methods do not give any information about biological toxicity. Therefore, in this study we tried to detect the presence of toxic substance on waters using sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) as a bioassay. MATERIALS AND RESULTS: The SOB biosensor was first stabilized using synthetic stream water and operated in both continuous and semi-continuous mode. When the SOB biosensor was operated in continuous mode, the effluent electrical conductivity (EC) stabilized at~1.72 dS/m. While in the case of semi-continuous, the EC stabilized at~0.6 dS/m. The SOB system was also operated at different reaction times to ascertain the shortest reaction time for monitoring the toxicity. Finally, the SOB biosensor was fed with nitrite as toxic substance. When 5 mg/L of nitrite was added to the SOB system, the EC decreased immediately. However, the EC recovered after few cycle. CONCLUSION: This study shows that the SOB biosensor can be used as warning system to protect aquatic environment from hazardous materials. Although SOB biosensor can not give specific information about the toxic substances, it can assess whether the water is toxic or not.

The objectives of this study were to introduce the methods of soil respiration measurement, to review soil respiration studies conducted in Korea, and to suggest potential issues generated from using various methods for soil respiration measurement. According to the measurement principles, the methods of soil respiration measurements are classified as: alkali absorption method (AA), closed chamber method (CC), closed dynamic chamber method (CDC), and open flow method (OF). Based on the litereaure review on soil respiration studies in Korea, the CDC method was mostly used by the researchers (62%), followed by the AA (17%), OF (13%) and CC (8%) methods. Along with these methods, various instruments were used such as LI-6400-09, EGM-3, EGM-4, and automatic soil respiration chamber. Most of the soil respiration measurements were carried out in forest ecosystems and the reported soil respiration showed a wide range of variations from 130 to 900 mg $CO_2\;m^{-2}h^{-1}$. Continuous monitoring of soil respiration with minimal disturbance and the potential inconsistency in measurements are still the challenges facing the researchers, causing a paucity in quality datasets of sufficient quantity. Few attempts of intercomparison among different methods hinder the data users from synthetic analysis and assessment of the collected datasets. In order to better estimate soil carbon budget and understand their exchange mechanisms in key ecosystems of Korea, it is necessary to measure soil respiration at various plant functional types, soils, and climate conditions over a decadal time scale along with the study on the partitioning of soil respiration into autotrophic and heteorotrophic components.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to make a report on the clinical prognosis of post traumatic lateral and posterolateral instability of the knee after LCL augmentation and popliteal tenodesis. Materials and Methods: The assessment was made among 21 cases who underwent augmentation of lateral collateral ligament(LCL) and popliteal tenodesis with allograft or artificial ligament (synthetic polyester, ABC ligament, Surgicraft, U.K.) at this Medical Center during the period from July 1996 to July 2003 and whose follow-up period was longer than one year. The authors recorded and analysed the physical findings (external rotation recurvatum test & posterolateral drawer test), stress roentgenograms(preoperative and postoperative) and Lysholm score. Results: The lateral and posterolateral instability of the knee were improved in 20 cases postoperatively, acccording to the clinical test and stress roentgenograms . Average Lysholm score was 52.5 preoperatively and 86.7 postoperatively .Conclusion: Our study found the surgery of lateral and posterolateral instability of the knee with augmentation of LCL and popliteal tenodesis using allograft or artiflcial ligament is simple technique. Taking these results into consideration, it seems to be one of effective methods of treatment.
In this paper we applied Ground-Based Synthetic Aperture Radar(GB-SAR) interferometry to detect artificial displacement of a reflector and performed an atmospheric humidity correction to improve the accuracy. A series of GB-SAR images were obtained using a center frequency of 5.3 GHz with a range resolution of 25 cm and a azimuth resolution of $0.324^{\circ}$, all in full-polarization (HH, VV, VH, HV) modes. A triangular trihedral corner reflector was located 160 m away from the system, and the artificial displacements of 0-40 mm was implemented during the GB-SAR image acquisition. The result showed that the RMS error between the actual and measured displacements, averaged in all polarization data, was 1.22 mm, while the maximum error in case of the 40 mm displacement was 2.72 mm at HH-polarization. After the atmospheric correction with respect to the humidity, the RMS error was reduced to 0.52 mm. We conclude that a GB-SAR system can be used to monitor the possible displacement of artificial/natural scatterers and the stability assessment with sub-millimeter accuracy.
Food packaging strategies have steadily improved with increasing demand for improved food safety, convenience, and shelf life. The development of edible film has been hailed as a technology substituting packaging using synthetic plastics. There has been a surge for research to develop antimicrobial edible films and coatings that can increase microbiological safety while preserving foods. This review addresses recent results that are useful in advancing and extending research into antimicrobial edible films. In this review, we suggest the trend of the development of antimicrobial edible film/coatings by outlining edible film materials, antimicrobial substances, antimicrobial and physical properties of the films, commercial antimicrobial edible films, and methods to statistically predict the efficacy of antimicrobial edible film/coatings, reported in recent studies.
Reinforced concrete bridge decks are the first to be damaged by vehicle loads and rain infiltration. Concrete deterioration primarily occurs owing to the corrosion of rebars and other metal components by chlorides used for snow and ice melting. The structural condition and concrete deterioration of the bridge decks within the pavement were evaluated using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey data. To evaluate concrete deterioration in bridges, it is necessary to develop GPR data analysis techniques to accurately identify deteriorated locations and rebar positions. GPR exploration involves the acquisition of reflection and diffraction wave signals due to differences in radar wave propagation velocity in geotechnical media. Therefore, a full-waveform inversion (FWI) method was developed to evaluate the deterioration of reinforced concrete bridge decks by estimating the radar wave propagation velocity in geotechnical media using GPR data. Numerical experiments using a GPR velocity model confirmed the deterioration phenomena of bridge decks, such as concrete delamination and rebar corrosion, verifying the applicability of the developed technology. Moreover, using the synthetic GPR data, FWI facilitates the determination of rebar positions and concrete deterioration locations using inverted velocity images.
