  • The paraelectric cubic-to-ferroelectric tetragonal phase transition of the thin Pb(Zr, Ti)$O_3$ (PZT) films grown on MgO(001) substrate was investigated in a series of synchrotron x-ray scattering experiments. As the thickness of the film decreases the transition temperature and the amount of the tetragonal distortion were decreased continuously Different from only the c-domains were existent in the thinnest 25nm thick film. Based on this we propose a model for the domain structure of the tetragonal PZT/MgO(100) film that is very different from the ones suggested in literature. We attribute the suppression of the transition to the substrate field that prefers the c-type domains near the interface and suppresses the tetragonal distortion to minimize the film-substrate lattice mismatch.

  • Growth of well-aligned ZnO nanostructures on various substrates such as GaN, ITO/glass, and sapphire was realized via a simple aqueous solution method at low temperature of $90^{\circ}C$. Morphology of ZnO nanostructures grown on various substrates as function of substrate was studied. It was found that ZnO nanostructures is a strong function of substrate. It was clearly observed that the morphology of ZnO nanostructures could be varied by change of substrate. Morphology, crystallinity, and crystal characteristics were carried out by FE-SEM, synchrotron x-ray scattering measurements, and high-resolution electron microscopy, respectively.

  • The quest for renewable energy requires us to understand, predict, and ultimately control matter and energy at the electronic, atomic, and molecular levels. The ever-increasing demand to diversify the energy portfolio and to minimize environmental impact while supplying global energy needs, has intensified the urgency for developing alternative energy sources and carriers. Significant research efforts are under way and will continue in a broad range of materials synthesis, use-inspired and fundamental science with the use of light sources such as synchrotron and free electron lasers. Energy-related materials research faces urgent challenges today. We need to go beyond the Edisonian hit and trial approach to more systematic research with the use of advanced tools applicable under realistic in-situ and in-operando conditions capable of exploring electronic and atomic structure of catalysts and energy relevant materials. Through various scientific examples, I will explain the current state-of-the art and future directions in the aforementioned areas of research.

  • Synchrotron emission at 408 MHz and HI column density have been used to find an evidence for the relationship between the Galactic magnetic field and the gas density. The observational data of the brightness temperature and HI column density, $T_b(408)\;and \;N_{HI}$, near the galactic plane between galactic longitudes $l=62^{circ}\;and\;l=250^{\circ}$ show a clear linear correlation of $T_b(408)=A(l,b)+B\;N_{HI}$, where A(l, b)is a background and forground radiation at the galactic coordinate. We found $(1.4{pm}0.3)10^{-21}$ for the slope B, which describes the strength of the syncrotron radiation from the HI cloud, and agrees with the value for the MIlky Way obtained by Beuermann et al. (1985). We conclude therefore that a well defined nonthermal corelates with the HI column density originating from this HI cloud.

  • In this work, based on our previous calculations of spectral energy distributions for a sample of Fermi blazars (Fan et al. 2015a), we calculated the radio loudness and performed correlation analyses. Our analysis results show that radio loudness is closely anti-correlated with synchrotron peak frequency and positively correlated with gamma-ray luminosity, suggesting that the gamma-ray emissions are strongly beamed.

  • The interface between SiNx and ZnO was investigated with Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS) for ZnO based thin film transistor (TFT) applications. Impurity species were interstitial $N_2$ molecules at the SiNx / ZnO interface. The evolution of $N_2$ is decreased with increasing of anneal temperature.

  • In the presence of synchrotron losses, diffusion of an ensembel of relativistic particles in an intraculster medium is investigated. The diffusion coefficient in the medium is found to be constrained by $28.8\;{\pm}\;0.4\;{\leq}\;Log\;D\;{\leq}\;30.5\;{\pm}\;0.4\;cm^2s^{-1}$ with the energy dependency of $D_0{\varepsilon}^{\mu}$ of ${\mu}=0.4{\pm}0.2$ as the previous observations suggested. As an important implication of the result, the brightest head-tail radio source NGC 4869, whose radio tail structure is indicative for its orbit within the cluster core, is considered to be the major contributor of particles for the formation of the Coma radio halo.

  • Magnetic fields appear to be ubiquitous in astrophysical environments. The existence of magnetic fields in the large-scale structure of the universe has been established through observations of Faraday rotation and synchrotron emission, as well as through recent gamma-ray observations. Yet, the nature and origin of the magnetic fields remains controversial and largely unknown. In this talk, I briefly summarize recent developments in our understanding of the nature and origin of magnetic fields. I also describe a plausible scenario for the origin of the magnetic fields; seed fields were created in the early universe and subsequently amplified during the formation of the large-scale structure of the universe. I then discuss the prospect of observation of magnetic fields in the large-scale structure of the universe.

  • By the oxygen plasma exposure to the organic light-emitting diodes, the turn-on voltage decreased from 10.5 to 7 V and luminance increased from 470 to $852\;cd/m^2$. Synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that during oxygen plasma exposure, oxygen ions were diffused into organic layer and induced p-type doping effect.
