  • In this study, blue light emiting, soluble PPV copolymers were synthesized by Witting reaction and characterized. ITO/copolymer/Ca and ITO/copolymer/A1 structured light emitting diodes(LED) were fabricated and their I-V characteristics were examined. Copolymers showed $\pi$-$\pi$ transition in UV-Vis./NIR spectra. The PL and abosorption spectrum showed the symmetric vibration modes with mirror images which means that copolymers are highly aligned. By introducing aliphatic hydrocarbon group on polymer main chain, the solubility of copolymers was improved and no significant effects of substituent were observed. The band offset of copolymers are well suited as light emitting material for LED application than monomer or oligomer does. THe band offset of copolymers is ∼3eV in PL spectrum and the threshold voltages of ITO/copolymer/Ca and ITO/copolymer/Al structured LED 3V, 12V respectively. In the case of ITO/copolymer/Ca LED, it is believed that the amount of electrons and holes is well balanced and the recombination of opposite charges occurs easily because the work functions of Ca and Al electrodes are 2.9 and 4.3eV respectively and the difference in barrier height between polymer and electrode was small.

  • Temperature control of a rubber injection mold is important for the dimensional accuracy of product. The main objective of this paper is to optimize the arrangement of heaters by FEM and optimal design method. Firstly, 3-dimensional transient heat transfer analysis was carried out for a square specimen mold. Results of FE analysis are a good agreement with the experimental results, showing about 1.22~7.22% error in temperature distribution. Secondly, we suggested the optimal method about an arrangement of heaters of rubber injection mold by using the optimal design technique. Distances between heater's center and the contact surface of mold, distances between heater's center and symmetric surface were considered as design variables. And the variances between the temperatures of cavity surfaces and their average temperature were used as the objective functions. Applying the optimal solution, the temperature variation was improved about 52.9~88.1 % compared to the existing mold. As a result of sensitivity analysis for design variables, design variables parallel to the direction of the split plane in mold affect the largest on the surface temperature variation in mold cavity.

  • In this paper, we investigate the fractional p&q-Kirchhoff type system $$\{M_1([u]^p_{s,p})(-{\Delta})^s_pu+V_1(x){\mid}u{\mid}^{p-2}u\\{\hfill{10}}={\ell}k^{-1}F_u(x,\;u,\;v)+{\lambda}{\alpha}(x){\mid}u{\mid}^{m-2}u,\;x{\in}{\Omega}\\M_2([u]^q_{s,q})(-{\Delta})^s_qv+V_2(x){\mid}v{\mid}^{q-2}v\\{\hfill{10}}={\ell}k^{-1}F_v(x,u,v)+{\mu}{\alpha}(x){\mid}v{\mid}^{m-2}v,\;x{\in}{\Omega},\\u=v=0,\;x{\in}{\partial}{\Omega},$$ where ${\Omega}{\subset}{\mathbb{R}}^N$ is an unbounded domain with smooth boundary ${\partial}{\Omega}$, and $0<s<1<p{\leq}q$ and sq < N, ${\lambda},{\mu}>0$, $1<m{\leq}k<p^*_s$, ${\ell}{\in}R$, while $[u]^t_{s,t}$ denotes the Gagliardo semi-norm given in (1.2) below. $V_1(x)$, $V_2(x)$, $a(x):{\mathbb{R}}^N{\rightarrow}(0,\;{\infty})$ are three positive weights, $M_1$, $M_2$ are continuous and positive functions in ${\mathbb{R}}^+$. Using variational methods, we prove existence of infinitely many high-energy solutions for the above system.

  • A new internal tide model for solving flow fields and wave generations is presented here which seems to be simple to apply, converges fast and yields accurate results. The new method employs a representation of vertical structure using dynamic basis functions which depend on the stratifications. The present method has been applied to the East Sea. For a constant Brunt-Vaisala case, weak baroclinic currents are generated over the entire continertal slop: however, results using a more realistic stratification can be described using only the lowest modes and exhibit much more realistic behavior. Baroclinic tide generation is confined to the upper slope. Model results for the East sea show the semi-diurnal baroclinic modes contain almost all the energy transferred from the barotropic mode.

  • We assessed whether the use of a symmetrical upper limb motion trainer in daily repetitive training for a 6-week period reduced spasticity and improved motor function in three chronic hemiparetic patients. Upper limb motor impairment and disability were measured by the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) and Manual Muscle Test (MMT), respectively. The electromyography (EMG) of the affected hand was recorded during isometric wrist flexion and extension. In all patients, FMA and MMT scores were significantly improved after the 6-week training. However, MAS scores of the affected wrist spasticity did not change considerably. Onset and Offset delays in muscle contraction significantly decreased in the affected wrist. The co-contraction ratio of flexor and extensor muscles significantly increased after the 6-week training. Onset and offset delays of the muscle contraction and co-contraction ratio correlated significantly with the patients' FMA. This study showed that repetitive, symmetric movement training can improve upper limb motor functions and abilities in chronic hemiparetic patients. Also, the EMG assessment of motor response is likely to provide insights into mechanisms and treatment strategies for motor recovery in chronic hemiparetic patients.

  • This paper presents a fast and stable imaging scheme using the localized nonlinear (LN) approximation of integral equation (IE) solutions for inverting electromagnetic data obtained in a crosswell survey. The medium is assumed to be cylindrically symmetric about a source borehole, and to maintain the symmetry a vertical magnetic dipole is used as a source. To find an optimum balance between data fitting and smoothness constraint, we introduce an automatic selection scheme for a Lagrange multiplier, which is sought at each iteration with a least misfit criterion. In this selection scheme, the IE algorithm is quite attractive for saving computing time because Green's functions, whose calculation is a most time-consuming part in IE methods, are repeatedly re-usable throughout the inversion process. The inversion scheme using the LN approximation has been tested to show its stability and efficiency, using both synthetic and field data. The inverted image derived from the field data, collected in a pilot experiment of water-flood monitoring in an oil field, is successfully compared with that derived by a 2.5-dimensional inversion scheme.

  • The arbitrary V-notched crack problem is considered. The general expressions for the stress components on this problem are obtained as explicit series forms composed of independent unknown coefficients which are denoted by coefficients of eigenvector. For this results eigenvalue equation is performed first through introducing complex stress functions and applying the traction free boundary conditions. Next solving this equation, eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors are obtained respectively, and finally inserting these results into stress components, the general equations are obtained. These results are also shown to be applicable to the symmetric V-notched crack or straight crack. It can be shown that this solutions are composed of the linear combination of Mode I and Mode II solutions which are obtained from different characteristic equations, respectively. Through performing asymptotic analysis for stresses, the stress intensity factor is given as a closed form equipped with the unknown coefficients of eigenvector. In order to calculate the unknown coefficients. based on these general explicit equations, numerical programming using the overdetermined boundary collocation method which is algorithmed originally by Carpenter is also worked out. As this programming requires the input data, the commercial FE analysis for stresses is performed. From this study, for some V-notched problems, unknown coefficients can be calculated numerically and also fracture parameters are determined.

  • This paper presents a theoretical analysis for the free vibration of rectangular tanks partially filled with an ideal liquid. Wet dynamic displacements of the tanks are approximated by combining the orthogonal polynomials satisfying the boundary conditions, since the rectangular tanks are composed of four rectangular plates. The classical boundary conditions of the tanks at the top and bottom ends are considered, such as clamped, simply supported, and clamped-free boundary conditions. As the facing rectangular plates are assumed to be geometrically and structurally identical, the vibration modes of the facing plates of the tanks can be divided into two categories: symmetric and antisymmetric modes with respect to the planes passing through the center of the tanks and perpendicular to the free liquid surface. The liquid displacement potentials satisfying the Laplace equation and liquid boundary conditions are derived, and the wet dynamic modal functions of a quarter of the tanks can be expanded by the finite Fourier transform for compatibility requirements along the contacting surfaces between the tanks and liquid. An eigenvalue problem is derived using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. Consequently, the wet natural frequencies of the rectangular tanks can be extracted. The proposed analytical method is verified by observing an excellent agreement with three-dimensional finite element analysis results. The effects of the liquid level and boundary condition at the top and bottom edges are investigated.

  • This paper presents an optimal fuzzy power system stabilizer to damp out low frequency oscillation. So far fuzzy controllers have been applied to power system stabilizing controllers due to its excellent properties on the nonlinear systems. But the design process of fuzzy logic power system stabilizer requires empirical and heuristic knowledge of human experts as well as many trial-and-errors in general. This paper presents and optimal design method of the fuzzy logic stabilizer using the genetic algorithm. Non-symmetric membership functions are optimally tuned over an evaluation function. The present inputs of fuzzy stabilizer are torque angle error and the change of torque angle error without loss of generality. The coding method used in this paper is concatenated binary mapping. Each linguistic fuzzy variable, defined as the peak of a membership function, is assigned by the mapping from a minimum value to a maximum value using eight bits. The tournament selection and the elitism are used to keep the worthy individuals in the next generation. The proposed system is applied to the one-machine infinite-bus model of a power system, and the results showed a promising possibility.

  • This paper addresses a method for numerical simulation in the pressing process of hot glass. Updated Lagrangian finite element formulations are employed for the flow and energy equations to accommodate moving meshes. The model is assumed axi-symmetric and creep flow is assumed due to the high viscosity. Commercial software ANSYS is used to solve the coupled flow and energy equations. Moving contact points as well as free surface during the pressing are effectively calculated and updated by utilizing API functions of CAD software Unigraphics. The mesh distortion problem near the wall is overcome by automatic remeshing, and the temperatures of the new mesh are conveniently interpolated by using a unique function of ANSYS. The developed model is applied to the pressing process of TV glasses. In conclusion, the presented method shows that the pressing process accompanying moving boundary can be simulated by effectively combining general purpose software without resorting to special dedicated codes.
