  • In this paper, we present a sentence speech recognizer for twenty questions game. The proposed approaches for speaker-independent sentence speech recognition can be divided into two steps. One is extraction of the number of syllables in eojeol for candidate reduction, and the other is knowledge based language model for sentence recognition. For twenty questions game, we implemented speech recognizer using 956 sentences and 1095 eojeols. The results obtained in our experiments were 87% sentence recognition rate and 90.15% eojeol recognition rate.

  • Recently, real documents such as newspapers as well as blogs include newly coined words such as "Wikipedia". However, most previous information processing technologies cannot deal with these newly coined words because they construct their dictionaries based on materials acquired during system development. In this paper, we propose a model to automatically recognize Korean unknown words excluded from the previously constructed dictionary. The proposed model consists of an unknown noun recognition phase based on full text analysis, an unknown verb recognition phase based on web document frequency, and an unknown noun recognition phase based on web document frequency. The proposed model can recognize accurately the unknown words occurred once and again in a document by the full text analysis. Also, the proposed model can recognize broadly the unknown words occurred once in the document by using web documents. Besides, the proposed model fan recognize both a Korean unknown verb, which syllables can be changed from its base form by inflection, and a Korean unknown noun, which syllables are not changed in any eojeol. Experimental results shows that the proposed model improves precision 1.01% and recall 8.50% as compared with a previous model.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify whether readability formulas based on linguistic factors are suitable for secondary and older primary age texts. A comparison among fomulas for primary age texts, some for both primary and secondary age, and some for secondary age revealed that exclusive ones for narrow age range were more effective. A model estimating readability scores from the average number of sentences in paragraphs or a model with two factors, the average number of sentences and paragraphs in texts was found to be good one for secondary age. While a model based on total number of unique syllables or a model from total number of unique syllables and new syllable occurrence ratio was good for primary age.

  • The purpose of this paper is to generate a pitch contour which is affected by tile phonetic environment and the number of syllables in each Korean isolated word using a neural network. To do this, we analyzed a set of 513 Korean isolated words, consisting of 1-4 syllables and extracted the pitch contour and the duration of each phoneme in all the words. The total number of phonemes we analyzed is about 3800. After that we approximated the pitch contour with a 1st order polynominal by a regression analysis. We could get the slope, the initial pitch and the duration of each phoneme. We used these 3 parameters as the target pattern of the neural network and let the neural network learn the rule of the variation of the pitch and duration, which was affected by the phonetic environment of each phoneme. We used 7 consecutive phoneme strings as an input pattern for a neural network to make the network learn the effect of phonetic environment around the center phoneme. In the learning phase, we used 3545 items(463 words) as target patterns which contained the phonetic environment of front and rear 3 phonemes and the neural network showed the correctness rate of 98.43%, 98.59%, 97.7% in the estimation of the duration, the slope, the initial pitch. In the recall phase, we tested the performance of tile neural network with 251 items(50 words) which weren't need as learning data and we could get the good correctness rate of 97.34%, 95.45%, 96.3% in the generation of the duration, the slope, and the initial pitch of each phoneme.

  • The current study confirmed the existence of an ip prosodic level in French intonation structure, as previously proposed by Sun-Ah Jun & $C\acute{e}cile$cile Fougeron (2000). However, in contrast to the previous suggestion of the plateau realized in an ip in several syntactic structures, the current study supposed that the plateau doesn't come from the different type of syntactic structures but arise from the unspecified syllables without any PA in an ip. Because if we limited ip phrasal tone to the syntactic structure, it would be difficult to find the more general reasons of ip level. Besides /Hi/ and /$H^*$/ we also used /$Hi^*$/ for the focused syllable in the current study. In emphasized sentences, in general, /$Hi^*$/ appeared in the first or second syllable of a leftward AP in an ip and /$H^*$/ in the final syllable of a rightmost AP of an ip, In contrast to these PAs, /$Hi^*$/ might appear in any syllable in an ip, but not to far from /$H^*$/ because the duration time and length t of plateau realized between /$Hi^*$/ and /$H^*$/ or /Hi/ and /$H^*$/ would make an essential harmonious rhythmic unit, Therefore, the current study determined the duration time and the number of syllables realized in each plateau in an ip level composed of more than one AP. As a phrase constituent structure, there is a practical need for intermediate prosodic units to allow for generalization over the many possible combinations of prosodic patterns that can occur. Further evidence is still needed to analyze and relate the different pitch ranges of the plateau of an ip according to the syntactic structure, to identify the considerable character in the French prosodic hierarchy.

  • The purpose of this study was (1) to examine the level of learning disabilities reflected in the written expression and writing performance of at-risk children with ADHD, (2) to investigate the level of differences in writing learning disabilities and writing performance depending on ADHD subtypes, and (3) to explore the error types and contents in the written expression of at-risk children with ADHD. The participants in this study were 46 upper grade elementary school children. They were firstly screened by teacher nomination, and only participants with a K-ARS score of over 17 were then selected to be among the 46 children involved in this study. Two further tests were then carried out : K-LDES as an index of learning disabilities in written expression and BASA-writing as an index of writing performance. The results showed that the at-risk children with ADHD possibly had comorbid writing learning disabilities. They were significantly different in terms of the number of total syllables, errors and correct syllables that they produced, in comparison to normal children. But there were no differences as regards the level of learning disabilities in terms of written expression and writing performance based on ADHD subtypes. As regards the implications of these results for future research, we suggested that there is a need for the identification of comorbid writing learning disabilities in ADHD assessment.

  • Recent studies on English $L^*$ (low pitch accent) have revealed the difference of changes in acoustic manifestation between utterances produced by Koreans and those produced by native speakers of English. However, not much effort has been made to compare $L^*$ focused constituents and non-focused constituents. At the same time, most previous works on focus realization are lacking in terms of normalization of acoustic measurement. Therefore, this research is dedicated to comparing the $L^*$ focused items and non-focused items realized by Koreans and Americans and to examining the realization of English $L^*$ produced by the two language groups with improved normalization of the acoustic features (F0, intensity and duration). Within-group analysis comparing focused words and non-focused words showed both Americans and Koreans prolonged the $L^*$ focused syllables but the effect size of syllable lengthening made by Koreans was far less than that made by Americans. Furthermore, significant F0 lowering was found in Americans but not in Koreans. However, the effect of intensity change caused by $L^*$ focus was not significant within each group. The effect of focused words was tested between the two groups revealing that Koreans implemented English $L^*$ focus with higher F0, lower intensity and shorter duration than Americans. In the instances in which a significant Group x Focus Location (initial, middle and final of a sentence) interaction was found, further analysis testing the effect of Group on each Focus Location was conducted. The testing showed that the Koreans produced shorter syllables at initial and middle of a sentence and higher F0 at initial of a sentence than Americans. Implications for the intonation training were also discussed.

  • In this paper, we propose a word spacing system which can be performed with just a small memory. We focus on significant memory reduction while maintaining the performance of the system as much as the latest studies. Our proposed method is based on the theory of Hidden Markov Model. We use only probability information not adding any rule information. Two types of features are employed: 1) the first features are the spacing patterns dependent on each individual syllable and 2) the second features are the values of transition probability between the two syllable-patterns. In our experiment using only the first type of features, we achieved a high accuracy of more than 91% while reducing the memory by 53% compared with other systems developed for mobile application. When we used both types of features, we achieved an outstanding accuracy of more than 94% while reducing the memory by 76% compared with other system which employs bigram syllables as its features.
