  • This paper deals with an experimental verification of a temperature-dependent power loss model of a DC/DC converter in severe temperature conditions. The power loss of a DC/DC converter is obtained by summing the losses by the components constituting the converter including switching elements, diodes, inductors, and capacitors. MIL-STD-810F stipulates that any electronic devices must be operable in the temperature ranging from $-50^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$. We summarized the temperature-dependent loss models for the converter components. A SEPIC-type converter is designed and built as a target. Using a constant-temperature chamber, a test rig is set up to measure the power loss of the converter. The experimental results confirm the validity of the loss model within 4.5% error. The model can be useful to predict the efficiency of the converter at the operating temperature, and to provide guidelines in order to improve the efficiency.

  • This paper presents the single-stage high power factor AC to DC converter operated in active-clamp mode. The proposed converter is added active-clamping circuit to boost-flyback single-stage power factor corrected power supply. The active-clamping circuit limits voltage spikes, recycles the energy trapped in the leakage inductance, and provides a mechanism for achieving soft switching of the electronic switches to reduce the switching loss. The auxiliary switch of active-clamping circuit uses the same control and driver circuit as the main switch to reduce the additional cost and size. To verify the performance of the proposed converter, a 100W converter has been designed. The proposed converter gives good power factor correction, low line current harmonic distortions, and tight output voltage regulation, as used unity power factor.

  • In this paper, authors propose a novel step-up AC-DC converter operated with power factor correction (PFC) and with high efficiency. The proposed converter behaves with discontinuous current control (DCC) of input current. The input current waveform in the proposed converter is got to be a discontinuous sinusoid form in proportion to magnitude of at input voltage under the constant duty cycle switching. Therefore, the input power factor is nearly unity and the control method is simple. In the general DCC converters, the switching devices are turned-on with the zero current switching (ZCS). But turn-off of the switching devices is done at the maximum current. To achieve a soft switching at turn-off, the proposed converter uses a new partial resonant circuit, which results in the very low switching loss and the high efficiency of converter.

  • In this paper, a comparative study on the performance of two-phase and three-phase randomized pulse position PWM scheme for mitigation of audible switching acoustic noise in motor drives is done. In the randomized Pulse Position PW, each of two-Phase or three-phase PWM Pulses is located randomly in each switching interval. Simulation and experimental efforts were executed to investigate the spread effects of Power spectra of inverter output voltage, waveforms of ripple current and audible switching acoustic noise. As results, two-phase RP% scheme is more effective from the viewpoint of switching loss and ease of implementation while the three-phase RPWM scheme is more effective from the viewpoint of the spread effects of power spectra. Also, from the view point of the audible switching acoustic noise in motor drives, two-phase and three-phase RPW schemes are nearly the same.

  • The system efficiency of the proposed Buck-Boost AC-DC converter is increased by soft switching method. The converter includes to merit of power factor correction (PFC) from sinusoidal control of input current. The switching behavior of control switches operates with soft switching by partial resonance, and then the proposed converter has high system efficiency with decrement of switching power loss. The input current waveform in proposed converter is got to be a sinusoidal form of discontinuous quasi-pulse row in proportion to magnitude of AC input voltage under the constant duty cycle switching. Therefore, the input power factor is nearly unity. The output voltage of the converter is regulated by PWM control technique. The discontinuous mode action of current flowing into inductor makes to simplify control method and control components. The proposed PFC Buck-Boost converter is analyzed to compare with the conventional PFC Buck-Boost converter. Some computer simulative results and experimental results confirm to the validity of the analytical results.

  • This study presents a novel method for reducing the switching losses of an asymmetric half-bridge converter for a three-phase, 12/8 switched reluctance motor operated in low speed. In particular, this study aims to reduce the switching-off losses of chopping switches in the converter when operated in the current regulated mode (chopping mode). The proposed method uses the mixed parallel operation of IGBT (chopping switch) and MOSFET (auxiliary switch). MOSFET is precisely controlled to momentarily conduct prior to the turn-off interval of the IGBT. Consequently, the voltage across the switches is clamped to approximately zero, substantially decreasing the turn-off switching losses. The analytical expressions of power losses are extensively elaborated. Compared with the conventional asymmetric half-bridge converter, the modified converter can effectively minimize the switching losses. Therefore, the efficiency of the converter is eventually improved. Computer simulation and experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

  • This paper is study on a high efficiency DC-DC converter of discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) added electric isolation. The converters of high efficiency are generally made that the power losses of the used semiconductor switching devices is minimized. To achieve high efficiency system, the proposed converter is constructed by using a quasi resonant circuit. The control switches using in the converter are operated with soft switching by quasi resonant method. The control switches are operated without increasing their voltage and current stresses by the soft switching technology. The result is that the switching loss is very low and the efficiency of the system is high. The proposed converter is also added electric isolation which is used a pulse transformer. When the power conversion system is required electric isolation, the proposed converter is adopted with the converter system development of high efficiency. The soft switching operation and the system efficiency of the proposed converter are verified by digital simulation and experimental results.

  • The Clamp Mode(CM) Forward Zero Voltage Switching Multi Resonant Converter(ZVS-MRC) with self-driven synchronous rectifier in studied. The loss at the synchronous rectification stage of the converter is analyzed using MOSFET linear model and is compared with the loss at the conventional schottky diode rectification stage of the converter. From the results of the analysis, it is known that the use of MOSFETs as a synchronous rectifier reduces the loss at the rectification stage over the whole load range comparing the use of schottky diodes as a conventional rectifier in the converter. In order to verify the validity of the analysis, we have built a 33W(3.3V/10A) CM Forward ZVS-MRC with self-driven synchronous rectifier, in which switching frequency is 1MHz, and tested. From the experimental results, it is known that the synchronous rectification achieved about 1W improvement in the loss at the rectification stage and about 3% in the efficiency at the converter as compared with the conventional schottky diode rectification.

  • This paper presents a low power boost converter using offset controlled Zero Current Sensor (ZCS) control for thermoelectric energy harvesting.[1] [5] Offset controlled ZCS uses adjustable pre-offset that is controled by 6bit code each connected gate of NMOS for switching. Offset controlled ZCS demonstrates an efficiency that is higher than using analog comparator ZCS and that is smaller area than using delay line ZCS. Experimentally, the offset controlled ZCS system consumes 10 times less power than analog comparator ZCS based system at similar performance.
